Jsie and I wanted a dg mre than anything else n Earth. At night, we’d slip ut t the rf t talk abut
dgs after ur parents went t bed.
One summer night, as we sat tgether n the rf, Jsie saw smething. “What’s that?” She pinted dwn
tward a dark shadw n ur driveway. I fllwed her finger and saw a big, black dg with lng, shaggy hair. We
climbed dwn the rf. Jsie made a little kissing nise and held ut her hand. The dg apprached slwly. When it
was clse enugh t pet, I petted it gently. It was s skinny that I culd just feel every bne, and its fur was messy
and full f dirt. It seemed t be a hmeless dg.
We decided t bring it sme fd. I slid int the kitchen t fill a bwl with milk and a cuple f raw eggs. As
sn as the dg finished, it disappeared int the bushes.
The next day, we used all ur pcket mney t buy dg fd, including tw cans f Wf Buddies, a small
bag f kibble (狗粮), and beef tailbnes. We hid the fd as we were afraid ur parents wuldn’t apprve f us
      feeding a hmeless dg.
That night, as sn as we set a plate dwn, the dg appeared almst as if frm nwhere. It nsed the fd, but
fr sme reasn the dg wuldn’t eat it.
“Cme n,” I said. “Let’s leave the dg alne and see what happens.” S we went in and hid t see.
Unexpectedly, it grabbed the plate in its muth and ran away. By the time we rushed back utside, the dg and the
      fd were lng gne.
This went n a lng time — fur r five nights, maybe. The mst unusual thing was that even thugh the dg
kept taking the fd, it didn’t seem t be putting n any weight. Instead, it was getting even skinnier.
Then came that special night. The dg came, but this time it barked (犬吠) at us, whined (哀叫), and ran back
and frth. I ran my hand thrugh its fur, “What’s it? What d yu want?”
