A clay cat, usually with big eyes and a wide-pen muth, may lk a bit scary at first. But in Yunnan, they are little guards that prtect hmes. They are called wama—traditinal clay cats that keep bad luck away and bring peace. In 2023, wama became Yunnan’s prvincial intangible cultural heritage (省级非物质文化遗产).
Zhang Hang, 32, is an inheritr (传承人) f Kunming wama-making skill. He makes these cute clay cats in a small Kunming museum and als started the Heart Chamber Wama Museum.
Zhang first saw wama in 2012 when he studied flk art at Yunnan Arts University. He lved its special artistic style very much. After that, lking fr ld wama became part f his daily life. With ver 10 years f effrt, his museum nw has mre than 700 wama. He said wama carries histry, culture and peple’s hpe fr a better life.
Once in 2021, he visited an ancient village and saw a wama abve. He tried t take it but failed. When he came back years later, bth the huse and the clay cat were gne.
