because f us,” she says. “I knew I had t d smething. Then, I fund Mind Yur Plastic.”
That aquarium encunter was nt the nly experience that inspired Tucker t actin. Other experiences like
wrking in retail(零售) management came with witnessing tns f plastic waste. “I saw hw much gt thrwn ut,
and it didn’t sit well with me,” she says.
Plastic waste in business is amng what Mind Yur Plastic is seeking t end via its three key prgrams: the
Circular Ecnmy Ambassadr Prgram(CEAP) fr educatrs and yuth, the Plastic-Free Events Plicy Prgram
fr municipalities(市政当局) and the Plastic Awareness and Reductin Tlkits (PART) Prgram fr businesses.
When peple dnate t Mind Yur Plastic, their dllars directly supprt these prgrams and help them effect
change. Thrugh direct partnerships with lcal educatrs, municipalities and businesses, these prgrams cnnect
Canadians with direct ways t take actin. The CEAP prgram, fr example, helps teachers educate yuth abut the
circular ecnmy, lead lcal cleanups, and track cllected waste.
The blame game is anther area in need f transitin, accrding t Tucker, wh says that big cmpanies, nt
custmers, shuld carry the respnsibility t slve Canada’s plastic pllutin prblem.
“It’s felt fr a lng time like the respnsibility is placed n the custmers,” says Tucker. “That needs t stp.”
Tucker says this perspective(观点) can be shifted by individuals creating public pressures — fr example, pushing

If there was t be a praise t the frg, it wuld have t cntain ne new piece f infrmatin: its ability t
predict earthquakes. A scientific study has suggested that they escape an area just befre such a disaster strikes.
The evidence, published yesterday in the Jurnal f Zlgy, centres n a ppulatin f breeding (繁殖) frgs
in Italy. It seems that, a few years ag, these creatures had suddenly escaped frm their hme five days befre an
earthquake struck their breeding grund.
The frgs’ ability t sense the earthquake is nt fully understd, but 96 percent f male frgs escaped and
returned a day after the danger had passed. This discvery cnfused Dr Rachel Grant, wh hadn’t set ut t learn

abut frgs’ reactins t earthquakes, but t study the effect f the lunar cycle n them. She nw believes that frgs
may be able t sense sme signs and use them as an early-warning system fr earthquakes.
Frgs are nt the nly creatures brn with an unusual pwer t predict natural disasters. In 2004, elephants in
Thailand made lud nises befre the tsunami hit, while bats in Sri Lanka flew arund in anxiety befre the disaster.
While mst f these animal warnings have been ignred, there are times when they have been nticed. In 1975,
scientists in Haicheng, China, nticed unusual behaviur in the city’s dgs and cats. They demanded the evacuatin
(撤 离 ) f the city, expecting a majr disaster. Their warning came five-and-a-half hurs befre an earthquake
struck, resulting in 2,000 deaths. Withut the evacuatin, anther 150,000 peple culd have been killed.
“There are things we can’t see and sunds we can’t hear. But many animals can. There is a sense called
electrperceptin that fish and sharks use t frm a picture arund them, while dlphins and bats use snar t find
their way arund,” says Prfessr Daniel Mills, an expert in animal behaviur at Lincln University.

Is text-messaging driving us apart? These days, we talk t each ther a lt with ur thumbs — sending six
billin text messages a day, and likely a few billin mre n services like WhatsApp.
But sme wrry that s much messaging leads t less cmmunicatin. “Our texts are fine,” ne cllege student
said. “It’s what texting des t ur cnversatins when we are tgether that’s the prblem.”
New technlgies ften upset the way we relate t ne anther, f curse. But such cnflict caused by texting
has a strng ech t the arguments we had ver the telephne a hundred years ag. The small device gave us a new
way t cntact ne anther and quickly prmte new frms f scializing. Callers arranged regular “visiting” calls,
calling remte family t catch up n news.
Sn, thugh, scial critics began t wnder: Was all this phne chatter gd fr us? Wuld it be s easy t
talk that we’d never leave each ther alne? “Thanks t the telephne, mtr car and such like inventins, ur
neighbrs have it in their pwer t turn ur leisure int a series f interruptins,” cmplained an American
prfessr in 1929. “We shall sn be nthing but transparent masses f jelly (果冻) t each ther,” a Lndn
writer said sadly in 1897.
Hwever, nwadays the telephne call seems like a return t a gentler era. When Jenna Birch, a
cmmunicatin prfessr at the University f Iwa, started dating a man wh insisted n calling her n the phne,
she fund it warm and delightful. S she desn’t think the shift t texting has made ur interactins wrse.
Accrding t her study, teenagers wh text the mst are als thse wh spend the mst time face t face with
friends. Cmmunicatin, it seems, brings mre cmmunicatin, and — as she argues — just because talk
happens in text desn’t mean it’s nt meaningful.
Michele Martin f Carletn University, thinks we’re living thrugh a replay f the telephne, where the things
that made it valuable — instant cmmunicatins — are the same that made it annying. “Peple believe they are
free because they can bring the mbile phne everywhere,” Martin says. “But at the same time, they are slaves t it.”
12. What’s the functin f the first paragraph?
A. T state the authr’s pinin.
B. T ffer an argument.
C. T describe a scene.
D. T sund a warning.
13. What is the main cncern f scial critics abut the telephne in paragraph 4?
A. It creates verly busy schedules.
B. It results in a lack f individuality.
第 7页/共 13页
C. It reduces scial interactin.
D. It leads t a lss f private time.
14. What can we learn frm Jenna Birch’s study?
A. Texting is particularly welcmed amng teenagers.
B. Cmmunicatin is meaningful nly face-t-face.
C. The meaning f cmmunicatin ges beynd medium.
D. Texting allws fr a deeper level f cmmunicatin.
15. What’s the best title fr the text?
A. Oh My Gd! We’ve Been Here Befre!
B. Gne with the Wind, Dear Texting!
C. Life Is T Shrt fr S Much Texting
D. Oh, Telephne, a Tale f Tw Sides
