On a warm afternn at the shre, my fur-year-ld sn, Wilsn, and I headed t the beach, ur favrite evening escape. The sun was still bright as Wilsn happily raced t the water’s edge, letting the waves wet him. It’s hard t believe that nt lng ag, his sensitivities frm autism (自闭症) kept him frm appraching the beach. After years f treatment, he nw lves ur seaside adventures, which fills me with jy.
We used t lk fr seashells t fill ur bucket (桶). On this day, there didn’t seem t be t many shells washed up n the shre. As we cllected seashells, I searched fr perfect nes, while Wilsn filled ur bucket with brken pieces. I wndered why he was ding that. When I suggested finding whle shells, he simply gave me a puzzled lk and cntinued picking up whatever he fund, cntent with his unique cllectin.
I cntinued my search fr a while and then stpped t watch him place mre brken shells int the bucket. Again, I stpped, but this time I asked in a firm vice, “Wilsn, why d yu keep filling ur bucket with shells that are brken?”
He lked up at me and said, “Mm, there are mre brken shells n the beach than perfect nes. We’ll fill the bucket faster with these brken nes.”
True, I thught, but wh wants a bucketful f brken shells? Wilsn stared at me and said, “Mm, these shells are brken, but they are still beautiful.”
      “Yu’re right, Wilsn,” I replied.
“And, Mm, this ne lks like a smile when yu hld it this way,” he said as he reached fr anther brken shell. “It reminds me f a clwn. This ne is rund like the sun.”
Tears filled my eyes as I realized my sn was teaching me an imprtant lessn. I tk ut the perfect shells I had cllected and placed them back n the beach. Wilsn and I walked alng, gathering nly brken shells, and admiring their beauty. Back at ur beach huse, we washed the shells and prudly displayed ur “brken shell garden”. It reminded us that nne f us are perfect, but we all have unique beauty. Nw, we cllect nly brken shells, finding beauty in their imperfectins and learning frm them.

A butterfly’s wings can have many jbs besides keeping the insect high up in the air. They may be used t attract mates, r t warn ptential attackers t stay away. All f these rles, thugh, depend n their unchanging cluratin. This plays int the idea that butterfly wings are dead tissue, like a bird’s feathers. In fact, that’s nt true. Fr example, in sme species males’ wings have special cells releasing sme chemicals which attract females.
Nanfang Yu, a physicist at Clumbia University, in New Yrk, has been lking int the matter. Tgether with Nami Pierce, a butterfly specialist at Harvard University, he has nw shwn, in a paper published in Nature Cmmunicatins in February, 2020, that butterfly wings are, indeed, very much alive.
In their experiments, the tw researchers used a laser (激光) t heat up spts n the wings f dzens f butterfly species. When the temperature f the area under the laser reached 40°C r s, the insects respnded within secnds by ding things that stpped their wings heating up further. These actins included a butterfly turning arund t minimize its prfile t the laser, mving its wings up and dwn r simply walking away.
Butterflies engaged in all f these heat-minimising activities even when the researchers blindflded them. That suggested the relevant sensrs were n the wings themselves. Dr Yu and Dr Pierce therefre searched thse wings fr likely lking sensry cells. They fund sme, in the frm f neurns (神经元) that were similar t heat detectrs knwn frm ther insects. They als uncvered disc-shaped cells that appeared t be similar t pressure-sensitive neurns. They guess that these are there t detect defrmatin f the wing — infrmatin an insect culd use t cntrl its flight pattern.
The third discvery they made t cntradict the “dead wing” idea was that sme butterfly wings have a heartbeat. A butterfly’s wings have veins (翅脉). These carry a bldlike liquid which, researchers have nw fund in males, shws a pulse (脉搏) f several dzen beats per minute. The surce f this pulse appears t be the scent pad (气味垫) , a dark spt n the wings that prduces the female-attracting chemicals. Apparently, this “wing heart” acts as a pump that helps bldlike liquid thrugh the scent pad.
In all their experiments simulating different envirnmental cnditins, Dr Yu and Dr Pierce cnsistently fund that, different parts f the wing are cvered by different srts f scales (鳞屑). In particular, tubes pass thrugh scales ver the scent pads. This imprves their ability t spread heat away and helps keep the living parts f a butterfly’s wings alive.
      28. A bird’s feathers are mentined in Paragraph 1 t ________.
      A. intrduce the latest research findings n a bird
      B. highlight the special feature f a bird’s feathers
      C. shw cmmn knwledge abut butterfly wings
      D. stress the difference between a butterfly and a bird
      29. What can we learn frm Dr Yu and Dr Pierce’s experiments?
      A. Butterfly wings are cmplicated living rgans.
      B. Butterfly wings have little reactin t external heat.
      C. The scent pads n sme male butterfly wings are their hearts.
      D. Heat-minimising activities help detect defrmatin f the wings.
      30. Which f the fllwing wuld be the best title fr the passage?
      A. Seeing Is BelievingB. Mre Than Meets The Eye
      C. Nthing Seek, Nthing FindD. Fine Feathers Make Fine Birds
      D
In cllege, I was taught an elegant thery f chemical cmbinatin based n excess electrns ging int hles in the rbital shell f a neighburing atm. But what abut diatmic cmpunds like xygen gas? Dn't ask; students aren't ready t knw. In physics, in bilgy, in any ther science classes, students frequently get that answer t.
It’s time t trust students t handle dubt and diversity in science. Actually, students are starting t act. They have shamed their senirs int including mre diverse cntributrs as faculty members and rle mdels. Yung schlars rudely ask their superirs why they fail t address the extinctin crises clarified by their research. The inherited authritarian plitical structures f science educatin are becming lame—but still remain largely unchanged frm the ld schl days.
A narrw, rigid educatin des nt prepare anyne fr the cmplexities f scientific research, applicatins and plicy. If we discurage students frm inquiring int the real nature f scientific truths, r explring hw sciety shapes the questins that researchers ask hw can we prepare them t maintain public trust in science in ur “pst-truth” wrld? Diversity and dubt prduce creativity: we must make rm fr them, and stp guiding future scientists int narrw specialties that value technique ver thught.
In science, even fundatinal building blcks can be questined. The unifying patterns f the peridic table are nw questined under clser examinatin. Sme scientists nw wnder whether the cncept f bilgical “species” cntributes mre cnfusin than insight, and whether it shuld therefre be abandned. Hwever, such a decisin wuld affect cnservatin plicy, in which identificatin f endangered species is crucial—s it is nt just an issue fr basic science.
Science students generally remain unaware that cncepts such as elements and species are cntested r are even cntestable. In schl, cllege and beynd, curricula highlight the technical and hide the reflective. Public arguments amng scientists ften presume that every prblem has just ne slutin.
Nnetheless, uncertain advice n cmplex issues shuld be a warning that, frm a future perspective, tday's ttal scientific cnsensus n sme plicy issue might have been the result f stubbrnness, a cnflict f interest r wrse. Just as a healthy demcracy accmmdates dissent and dissnance, the cllective cnsciusness f science wuld d well t embrace dubt and diversity. This culd start with teaching science as a great, flawed, nging human achievement, rather than as a cllectin f cut-and-dried eternal (永久的)truths.
I recall a legendary chemistry prfessr wh was nt skilful at getting classrm demnstratins t wrk—but discussing what went wrng helped his students t thrive. A mathematician friend let pupils discuss every statement in the textbk until all were satisfied. They did very well in exams, and taught themselves when he was absent. Treating peple at all levels as cmmitted thinkers, whse asking teaches us all, is the key t tackling the challenges t science in the pst-trust age.
      31. The prblem f current science training is that ______.
      A. students cannt becme specialists
      B. it ges against established science educatin
      C. students lse trust in their teachers and prfessrs
      D. it fails t prvide students with what they need in future
      32. The peridic table is mentined t prve that ______.
      A. even the widely accepted can be challenged
      B. students are generally ignrant f science
      C. mst previus researches are ut f date
      D. science has been develping with time
      33. It can be learnt frm the passage that ______.
      A. students may be mre innvative if they are allwed t dubt
      B. science students d nt cntest elements r species
      C. students shuld nt trust established science
      D. diversity prevents prgress in science
      34. Which f the fllwing statements best represents the writer’s pinin?
      A. Our curricula highlight the technical and hide the reflective.
      B. Science shuld be a cllectin f cut-and-dried eternal truths.
      C. Teachers shuld treat peple at all levels as cmmitted thinkers.
      D. The cncept f bilgical species brings mre cnfusin than insight.

      第三部分:书面表达(共两节, 32分)
      第一节 阅读表达(共4小题,第40、41小题各2分,第42小题3分,第43小题5分,共12分)
The last thing I wanted t hear when my gvernment-spnsred schlarship was withdrawn during my final year f cllege was: "Things are wrking ut fr yur wn gd. Just give them sme time." Thse wrds just stirred a lt f anger in me.
Then I read the stry f the Chinese bamb farmer, which gave me a different view n life. The seed f the Chinese bamb is planted in the grund like every seed. It is watered, and fed with nutrients daily, but it shws n immediate physical respnse and desn't appear t grw. The farmer cntinues t water and feed the seed in year ne, year tw, and year three. N grwth is seen until the furth year, when the seed finally breaks thrugh the grund. Then, in the space f just five weeks, it grws ninety feet tall. The Chinese bamb grws t its full capacity within 5 years.
Despite nt seeing an immediate result, the farmer had trust in what he was ding. He cntinued t water and feed the plant fr fur years, because he believed that if he played his wn rle and did all that a farmer was suppsed t d, then he wuld be given his reward at the right time. That trust and patience is what kept the farmer persistently feeding his seed fr fur years befre enjying the reward in the end.
Life is nt always straightfrward. Mst ften, it's nt a matter f 5+5 =10 (Sum 1).
Life can be mre like 2+1+2+0+0+0+1+2+0+0+1 + 1=10 (Sum 2).
Bth sums lead t the same result, but thrugh quite different paths and prcesses. T be mature is t accept that things might lk rugh right nw but the stry can still have a great ending.
We might live in a micrwave generatin where everything seems t happen instantly; but many things still bey the laws f nature. Just ding what yu are suppsed t be ding, having patience like the Chinese bamb farmer, and trusting that things will wrk ut fr yu can help yu get thrugh the tughest times.
      40. What happened t the authr in the final year f cllege?
      41. Hw des the Chinese bamb grw in the furth year?
      42. Please decide which part is false in the fllwing statement, then underline it and explain why.
T vercme difficulties, we need t trust that things will wrk ut and simply wait patiently fr the great ending t cme.
      43. Which is yur life mre like, Sum 1 r Sum 2? Explain why. (abut 40 wrds)
      第二节 应用文写作(20分)
