I’m an 18-year-ld pre-medical student, tall and gd-lking, with tw shrt stry bks and quite a number f essays t my credit. Why am I singing such praises f myself? Just t explain that the attainment f self-pride cmes frm a great deal f self-lve, and t attain it, ne must first learn t accept neself as ne is. That was where my struggle began.
Brn and raised in Africa,I had always taken my African rigin as burden. My self-dislike was further fueled when my family had t relcate t Nrway, where I attended a high schl. Cmpared t all the white girls arund me, with their glden hair and delicate lips, I, a black girl, had curly hair and full, red lips. My nse ften had a thin sheet f sweat n it, whatever the weather was. I just wanted t bury myself in my shell crying “I’m s different!”
What als cntributed t my self-dislike was my ccasinal stuttering (口吃), which had weakened my self-cnfidence. It always std between me and any fine pprtunity. I’d taken it as an excuse t avid any public speaking sessins, and unknwingly let it rule ver me.
Frtunately, as I grew lder, there came a turning pint. One day a white girl caught my eye n the schl bus when she suddenly turned back. T my astnishment, she had a thin sheet f sweat n her nse t, and it was in Nvember! “Ww,” I whispered t myself, “this isn’t a genetic(遗传的) disrder after all. It’s perfectly nrmal.” Days later, my life tk an-ther twist(转折). Searching the internet fr stuttering cures, I accidentally learned that such famus peple as Isaac Newtn and Winstn Churchill als stuttered. I was greatly relieved and then an idea suddenly hit me—if I’m smart, I shuldn’t allw my stuttering t stand between me and my success.
Anther bst t my self-cnfidence came days later as I was watching the news abut Oprah Winfrey, the famus talk shw hst and writer—she’s black t! Whenever I think f her stry and my frmer dislike f my clr, I’m practically filled with shame.
Tday, I’ve grwn t accept what I am with pride; it simply gives me feeling f uniqueness. The idea f self-lve has taken n a whle new meaning fr me: there’s always smething fantastic abut us, and what we need t d is learn t appreciate it.

Sme peple have said aging is mre a slide int frgetfulness than a jurney twards wisdm. Hwever, a grwing bdy f research suggests that late-in-life learning is pssible in reality educatin des an aging brain gd.
Thrughut life, peple’s brains cnstantly restre themselves, In the late 1960s, British brain scientist Geffrey Raisman studied grwth in damaged brain regins f rats thrugh an electrn micrscpe; their brains were making new cnnectins. This meant brains may change every time a persn learns smething new.
Of curse, that desn’t mean the brain isn’t affected by the effects f time. Just as height usually declines ver the years, s des brain vlume: Humans lse abut 4 percent every decade starting in their 40s. But that reductin desn’t necessarily make peple think slwer; as lng as we are alive and functining, we can change ur brains with new infrmatin and experiences.
In fact, scientists nw suspect accumulating nvel experiences, facts, and skills can keep peple’s minds mre flexible. New pathways can strengthen ur ever-changing mental structure, even as the brain shrinks.
Cnventinal ways like wrd puzzles and brain-training apps can cntribute t mental durability. Even smething as simple as taking a different rute t the grcery stre r ging smewhere new n vacatin can keep the brain healthy.
A desire fr new life challenges can further bst brainpwer. Research abut aging adults wh take n new enterprises shws imprved functin and memry as well as a reduced risk f mental disease. Openness —a, characteristic defined by curisity and a desire fr knwledge — may als help flks pass brain tests. Sme flks are brn with this take-in-the-wrld attitude, but thse wh aren’t as genetically gifted aren’t necessarily ut f luck. While genes can encurage an interest in ding new things a 2012 study in the jurnal Psychlgy and Aging fund cmpleting reasning tasks like puzzles and number games can enhance that desire fr nvel experiences, which can, in turn, refresh the brain. That’s why brain scientist Richard Kennedy says “It’s nt that ld dgs can’t learn new tricks. It’s that maybe ld dgs dn’t realize why they shuld.”
46. What d sme peple think f aging adults?
A. Their wisdm grws as time ges by.
B. Their memry is gradually getting wrse.
C. They can benefit frm late-in-life learning.
D. They are likely t have mental health issues.
47. What can we cnclude frm Geffrey Raisman’s finding?
A. Brain damage seriusly prevents ne’s learning.
B. Brain pwer weakens slwer than we imagine.
C. Brains may refresh and imprve with learning.
D. Brains make cnnectins under gd physical cnditins.
48. What is ne thing that helps maintain the health f ur brain even as it shrinks?
A. Ding daily rutines by cnventinal means.
B. Aviding wrrying abut ur mental strength.
C. Imitating ld dgs’ way f learning new tricks.
D. Appraching everyday tasks in nvel ways.
49. What des the authr say can cntribute t the imprvement f brain functin?
A. Being curius and desiring knwledge.
B. Being eager t pass brain tests at an ld age.
C. Rising t life’s challenges and aviding risks.
D. Bsting immunity t serius mental diseases

A. Wishing t slve puzzles enhances ne’s reasning pwer.
B. Playing number games unexpectedly stimulates ne’s memry.
C. Desiring new experiences can help t refresh the brain.
D. Learning new tricks shuld nt be cnfined t ld dgs nly.
D
Mst peple with gd sense wuld accept that we can and shuld learn frm accidental failures. It wuld be impssible t prgress in anything, after all, withut taking the ccasinal misstep. And by understanding hw we slipped, we can avid falling in the future.
Few wuld advcate making intentinal mistakes, hwever. Yet cnsciusly erring (犯错) can prmte deeper understanding and better recall. The phenmenn is knwn as the derring effect — cming frm “deliberate (故意的) erring” — and when applied prperly, it may bring benefits in many unexpected areas f life.
In ne experiment carried ut at the Natinal University f Singapre, participants were given the task f learning cncepts n a difficult subject. Fr sme terms, they simply cpied ut the crrect definitin; fr thers, they were asked t first add an errr in their descriptin f the term befre crrecting the mistake.
Naturally, yu wuld expect the additin f the errrs t have increased unwanted cnfusin. Yet the exact ppsite was true: the participants wh made deliberate errrs learned abut twice as much as the peple wh simply cpied ut the crrect definitins.
The derring effect culd be applied in ther situatins. S a music teacher may find the additin f deliberate errrs culd help a student remember the right musical ntes. Such a playful apprach culd fuel their creativity fr cmpsitin, if the student lks fr ways t develp thse wrng ntes int smething mre attractive. It is encuraging t discver that by readily accepting ur errrs and wisely placing urselves in the way f being wrng, we can in fact vercme weaknesses and rise strnger.
The derring effect culd be useful fr many ther challenges t. If yu enjy cking, fr example, yu may faithfully fllw a recipe withut questining the instructins. But why nt try t break away frm thse habits and deliberately d the “wrng” thing fr a change, and see where yur derring takes yu? If yu are painting, meanwhile, yu culd relax ne f the cnstraints (限制) that yu usually put n yur wrk and see what yu prduce.
At wrst, yu will have refreshed and deepened yur knwledge f the rules yu nrmally apply, s that yu can be even mre effective next time. At best, yu may just find that yu have discvered smething cmpletely new and unexpected, thrugh a flash f inspiratin that yu wuld have missed with perfectinism. Either way, yur apparent missteps will have mved yu a little clser t true mastery.
