Mangrves (红树林) are critical ecsystems that bridge land, freshwater, and sea. Hme t varius species, they prtect and supprt cuntless castal cmmunities wrldwide. Yet they
cntinue t face threats frm bth human activities and natural prcesses. The reprt, The State f the Wrld’s Mangrves 2024, examines glbal changes in mangrve ecsystems ver the past tw decades.
Agricultural activities, including aquaculture (水产养殖), il palm plantatins and rice
cultivatin, accunted fr the largest share f glbal mangrve lss between 2000 and 2020. The reprt als highlights the impact f“natural retractin,” a term used t describe mangrve lss
driven by changes in riverbeds r sea levels.
The glbal drivers f mangrve lss
Nnetheless, changes in the drivers f mangrve lss have led t encuraging results. The rate f net mangrve lss decreased by 44%, falling frm 181.5 km2 per year in 2000 — 2010 t 102.4 km2 per year in 2010 — 2020. Mangrve gains are als recrded in several regins, where restratin effrts accunted fr 25% — 33% f mangrve expansin in Suth and Sutheast Asia and Africa.
Prtecting mangrves requires actin at every level. Gvernments can expand prtected areas and imprve mnitring systems, while cnservatin prject teams restre damaged
wetlands. Scientists develp real-time mnitring tls t detect mangrve lss. The reprt als stresses the imprtance f cperatin with lcal cmmunities. In sme prjects, cmmunity
members cntribute knwledge by describing the histrical distributin f mangrves, causes f lss, and seasnal castal changes they have bserved. They als prvide data thrugh citizen
science platfrms like iNaturalist, helping researchers plan mre effective restratin prjects.
1.What was the ttal percentage f mangrve lss caused by agricultural activities in 2010-2020?
      A .38%. B .47%. C .49%. D .62%.
2 .What can we learn abut mangrve lss between the tw decades?

C .It expanded n a glbal scale. D .It shwed a dwnward trend.
3 .What can lcal cmmunity members d t supprt mangrve restratin?
A .Make restratin plans. B .Share eclgical infrmatin.

At dinnertime, if I’m anywhere near my favurite restaurant, there’s nt a chance yu can talk me int ging smewhere else — I want t eat at China Fun. Actually, I have been eating at
      this restaurant fr 17 years.
Dn’t get me wrng, trying new things is great, and I lve explring. But the pressure t
always keep trying new things ignres the satisfactin f finding ur lves and keeping n lving them. That’s why I dislike pp-up restaurants. I’d much rather invest my time and mney in a
place that will still be here next mnth, wrking my way thrugh the menu t find my favurite dishes, and figuring ut which is the best table. In a chatic wrld, being a regular makes me feel that there are always places where things stay the same.
In my mental map f the city, I mark all my favurites — cute bkshps, hidden gardens, and the htdg stand that’s pen nly at weekends. T be a regular is t let a place becme a
character in yur life. The act f returning builds cnnectin, and a sense f being at hme as yu settle in and share a nd with the waiter befre he asks if yu’ll be having the usual.
Sme things just get better the mre yu d them. While relaxing weekends ffer the
prmise f finding cuntry paths fr a wander, I wuld prefer revisiting a belved walking rute
as the seasns turn, nticing the subtle (微妙的) changes in the same place. I’ve walked alng the Thames a hundred times, but the banks lk different each time as the tides mve t reveal r
cnceal (隐藏). It feels like spending time with a friend. The river is alive, and each time we meet, we grw clser.
I discvered a little lcal café recently. After several visits, Kirsty, the resident café cat, has finally started acknwledging my presence. The ther repeat custmers have als started ndding at me. They were here first and this is their café. Nw they seem t be saying, “Have a seat, stay a while, and cme back sn.”
4 .What des the authr’s restaurant preference shw?
      A .He is a creature f habit. B .He is strictly self-disciplined.
C .He lves explring new things. D .He favurs Asian cuisine mst.

A .Crwded but cmfrting. B .Familiar but refreshing.
C .Winding but apprachable. D .Exhausting but adventurus.
7 .What message des this text mainly cnvey?

It’s Mnday mrning again. Like many thers, yu spend yur weekend resting, say,
scrlling n yur phne, but smehw when the wrkweek arrives, yu never feel as refreshed as yu hped. Yu wnder: Is there a better way t recharge? Nw research suggests the answer is “yes” and it lies in leisure crafting.
Leisure crafting is nt abut what yu d in yur free time, but hw yu d it. It invlves structuring things yu already enjy ding with intentinality s that they help yu set individual gals, prmte scial cnnectins, and build skills. The idea is nt t cmpletely shift yur
apprach t free time — r even pick up new pursuits-as much as it is t integrate a few specific gals. Like t run? Try training fr a race. Enjy reading? Aim t read a certain number f bks every mnth.
Setting gals in ff-hurs lks like anther example f letting wrk-brain lgic inch its way int persnal lives. But dne right, it can help yu feel a sense f purpse, cnfidence, and accmplishment, says Alex Hamrick, a management prfessr at the University f Richmnd. Researchers did 11 field studies with mre than 2,400 wrking prfessinals and fund that
individuals reprted higher energy levels, mre psitive mds, and strnger verall well-being after engaging in leisure crafting.
While leisure crafting requires cmmitment and gal-setting, it is still simply that: leisure.
The gal is nt t turn hbbies int a secnd jb. Research has shwn that peple’s prductivity
tends t stp increasing at 60 hurs a week. Expanding the hurs spent maximizing utput, even in pursuit f perfecting yur cking techniques r reading detective nvels, culd make yu mre
tired. Hamrick agrees that if purpseful pursuits start t feel like wrk, it might be time t stp. Leisure crafting shuld enhance-nt replace-ther frms f relaxatin.
A recent gvernment guide t getting ff yur phne included the suggestin f setting a recreatinal gal as a diversin frm the screen. Beynd all the grander reasns t leisure craft, that simple ne may be amng the mst relevant.
8 .What phenmenn is described in the first paragraph?
A .Lack f effective ways t rest. B .Wrking thrugh the weekend.
C .Addictin t playing n phnes. D .Feeling wrried abut the future.
9 .Which f the fllwing is the main feature f leisure crafting?
A .Shifting yur life fcus. B .Extending yur free time.
C .Acting with a purpse. D .Taking up new hbbies.
10 .What is paragraph 3 mainly abut cncerning leisure crafting?
A .Its appraches. B .Its purpses. C .Its benefits. D .Its examples.
11 .Why des the authr mentin the research in paragraph 4?
A .T argue against setting unrealistic gals.
B .T warn against verding leisure crafting.
C .T explain why cmmitment is vital fr success.
D .T prve hw leisure crafting imprves efficiency.

Nitrgen fertiliser (氮肥) is essential fr mdern agriculture but carries a heavy
envirnmental price, cntributing t water pllutin and sil degradatin. Hwever, simply
reducing its use is nt a slutin. Crps typically respnd t nitrgen shrtage by investing mre in rt grwth t search fr nutrients, ften at the expense f sht (茎叶) develpment and grain prductin. While adaptive in the wild, this rt-sht trade-ff limits agricultural prductivity.
Fr decades, the gene behind this trade-ff has been unknwn. In a new study, researchers frm Nanjing Agricultural University, the University f Oxfrd, and the Chinese Academy f
Sciences nt nly identified the gene respnsible, but demnstrated that mdifying it in rice can ensure stable sht grwth and yields even when nitrgen levels are lw. The breakthrugh culd ultimately reduce dependence n artificial fertilisers.
In experiments, the team fund that a gene in rice called WRINKLED1a has distinct rles in the sht and rt. In the sht, it switches n NGR5, a key gene that prmtes branching. In the rts, WRINKLED1a supprts nitrgen uptake, but als prevents the frmatin f a prtein
cmplex that wuld therwise limit rt grwth. Interestingly, WRINKLED1a des nt prevent this prtein cmplex in the sht, shwing that its rles are tissue-specific.
Frm ver 3,000 rice varieties, the team identified a naturally strnger versin f the gene
and used traditinal plant breeding (育种) t crss it int varieties carrying a weaker frm. Over three field trials in Hainan and Anhui prvinces, China, rice plants with this imprved versin
maintained a mre stable rt-t-sht balance acrss different nitrgen cnditins, resulting in a 23.7% yield increase under lw fertiliser use and a 19.9% increase under high fertiliser use.
Lead authr Dr. Shan Li nted that WRINKLED1a helps rice avid the usual “mre rts,
less sht” situatin under nitrgen limitatin, supprting stable yields with lwer nitrgen inputs. “The next step is t investigate whether similar genes in ther crps, such as wheat and crn, can be used t achieve the same utcmes,” she added.
12 .Which aspect f the rt-sht trade-ff des the new study fcus n?
A .Its ecnmic cst. B .Its nutritinal demand.
C .Its genetic mechanism. D .Its envirnmental impact.
13 .What can we learn abut WRINKLED1a?
A .Its functin varies in different tissues.
B .Its effect is restricted t the sht.
C .It prmtes prtein cmplex frmatin.
D .It reduces nitrgen levels in the rts.
14 .What might the study help t d accrding t the text?
A .Cntribute t fd diversity. B .Facilitate sustainable farming.
C .Justify nitrgen fertiliser use. D .Advance rice breeding methds.
15 .What d Dr. Shan Li’s wrds suggest?
A .The limitatin f the research. B .A challenge in applying the findings.
C .The need t test the utcmes. D .A pssible directin fr further study.
