The Fahai Temple, lcated at the suthern ft f Cuiwei Muntain in the Shijingshan district f Beijing,
huses Ming Dynasty fresces (壁画) dating back nearly 600 years. Tday, a brand-new Fahai Temple Mural Art
Center has been built at the ft f the muntain.
第 5页/共 13页
“By using digital mdern technlgy, valuable digital resurces have been created, allwing the inactive
fresces t cme t life,” said Liu Xiab, the art center’s curatr.
First built in 1439, the Fahai Temple is knwn as ne f the “three majr fresces in China” tgether with the
fresces fund in Dunhuang and Yngle Palace. “The fresces depict 77 figures, including rdinary peple,
Buddhas and bdhisattvas, each with different pstures and expressins,” said Liu.
With the fall f Ming Dynasty, the prsperity f the Fahai Temple t came t an abrupt end. Hwever, in
recent years, the develpment f a high-tech industry featuring creativity services and digital technlgy has given
the Shijingshan district gvernment mre cnfidence in the digital display f fresces.
At the exhibitin f Fahai Temple Mural Art Center, the riginal mural paintings are displayed n a 4K HD
screen, presenting them at their actual size. Each f the 77 figures is prtrayed with thrugh attentin t detail
using 3D mdeling at the pixel (像素) level.
The facial details f Water-mn Avalkitesvara, ne f the mst representative figures n the fresces f
Fahai Temple, are hard t make ut in dim cnditins. Hwever, after using 3D mdeling, the figure’s face, which
measures ver 3 meters tall, can be seen clearly n the 4K HD screen at the mural hall f the art center.
“Thrugh technlgical means, we can zm in n them t shw specific details and intrduce the cntent f
the fresces item by item, ffering the audience ample time t understand the fresces,” Liu explained.
24. What can we knw abut the Fahai Temple fresces?
A. They were built during the Qing Dynasty. B. They are amng China’s three majr fresces.
C. There are altgether 77 Buddhas in the fresces. D. They remained prsperus in the Ming Dynasty.

The United Natins estimates that sme 40% f the wrld’s languages face extinctin. Can artificial
intelligence slw this trend? Glbal tech giants are ptimistic, yet the reality is nt that simple. Generative AI has
made great prgress in breaking dwn language and cultural barriers, but it has big shrtcmings in understanding
“lw-resurce languages” — native and reginal dialects lacking valuable digital cntent.
A Stanfrd reprt fund mst majr large-language mdels (LLMs) perfrm prly in nn-English, especially
resurce-scarce dialect. This is a cultural lss and a technlgical blind spt, with the cre issue being a lack f
high-quality data. The mst pwerful LLMs need huge amunts f training material, mstly in English. This leads
AI t unify culture and spread Angl-centric views, a prblem researchers have lng cmplained abut.
AI’s multilingual weaknesses bring mre than digital exclusin. Studies shw lw-resurce languages can get
past its safety guardrails. Inapprpriate questins in Thai r Swahili failed t trigger AI’s safety mechanisms,
unlike thse in English r Chinese. Wrse still, anyne can translate dangerus requests int such languages t
explit AI’s flaws, making this a glbal safety prblem, nt just a linguistic ne.
A push fr independent AI has grwn especially in linguistically diverse Asia t preserve cultural distinctins
in AI tls: Singapre’s SEA-LION mdel cvers ver a dzen lcal languages, and Malaysia’s ILMU mdel
recgnizes reginal cues. These effrts have revealed fr an AI mdel t truly represent a grup f peple, even the
smallest details in training material matter.
True language preservatin depends n cmmunity-led effrts, nt just technlgy. Indnesian researchers
tried t save the Orang Rimba language with Meta’s AI but faced limited datasets — nly deeper cmmunity
participatin can slve this. New Zealand’s Te Hiku Media set a gd example: wrking with Mari elders, it built
a cmmunity-wned language database, nt ne cntrlled by big tech. This is the nly sustainable way —
withut cmmunity invlvement, AI will nt save dying languages, but help bury them.
28. What is the majr prblem f AI in prtecting dying languages?
A. It makes little prgress in breaking cultural barriers.
B. It cannt create any digital cntent fr native dialects.
C. It lacks high-quality training data fr lw-resurce languages.
D. It erases cultural diversity and prmtes Angl-centric ideas.
29. What can we learn abut AI’s safety guardrails frm the text?
A. They bring mre than digital exclusin.
B. They fail t prtect English digital users.
C. They wrk well in handling all linguistic requests.
第 7页/共 13页
D. They can be bypassed by lw-resurce languages.
30. Hw des the authr present Asia’s independent AI effrts?
A. By giving examples. B. By quting an expert.
C. By prviding statistics. D. By making a cmparisn.
31. What can be a suitable title fr the text?
A. AI: A Pwerful Tl fr Dying Language Preservatin
B. Independent AI in Asia: The Key t Slving Language Crisis
C. Lw-resurce Languages: A Big Challenge t AI Develpment

A tiny versin f the develping cerebral crtex (大脑皮质) — a brain regin invlved in thinking, memry
and prblem-slving — has been grwn in a lab dish with a system f bld vessels that clsely resembles the
real thing. This is ne f the mst detailed brain rganids (类 器 官 ) created t date, and it will deepen ur
understanding f the brain.
Brain rganids, smetimes called mini-brains, are typically grwn in lab dishes by bathing stem cells in a
mixture f chemical cues, which stimulate them t frm balls f cells. Since they were first created in 2013, these
cerebral structures — whse electrical activity resembles newbrn brains — have prvided fresh insights int
cnditins such as schizphrenia and dementia.
But rganids have ne big flaw: they typically start dying after a few mnths. That’s because, while
full-sized brains are equipped with a netwrk f bld vessels t transprt xygen and nutrients, brain rganids
can absrb these nly frm the dish in which they are grwn, starving the innermst cells. This limits their size and
cmplexity, and hw well they resemble the develping brain. “It’s a very big prblem,” says Lis Kistemaker at
the University Medical Centre Utrecht in the Netherlands.
T address this, Ethan Winkler at the University f Califrnia, San Francisc, and his clleagues grew human
stem cells int crtical rganids, which mimic the develping crtex. Separately, they grew rganids made f
bld vessel cells and placed them at bth ends f each crtical rganid. After weeks, the bld vessels spread
evenly thrughut the mini-brains.
Imaging revealed the vessels had a hllw center, r lumen, highly similar t thse in real brains. Madeline
Lancaster at the University f Cambridge calls this “a majr step.” These vessels als mre clsely match the
physical prperties and genetic activity f natural bld vessels, frming an imprved “bld-brain barrier.” The
第 8页/共 13页
findings suggest vessels stand a better chance f transprting nutrients t keep rganids alive, thugh Lancaster
ntes we are still far frm fully functinal bld vessels.
32. What can we knw abut brain rganids?
A. It’s assciated with cgnitin. B. It helps deepen insight int brain.
C. It’s very similar t the real brain. D. It cures schizphrenia and dementia.
33. What prevents brain rganids frm develping further?
A. The cmplex chemical envirnment. B. The size f the dish they are grwn in.
C. The instability f their electrical activity. D. The lack f a prper nutrient transprt system.
34. What slutins did the researchers cme up with?
A. Building a cmplete netwrk f bld vessels in full-sized brains.
B. Increasing the size and cmplexity f crtical rganids rapidly.
C. Cmbining tw types f rganids t help bld vessels grw inside.
D. Prviding mre xygen and nutrients fr cells directly frm the dish.
35. What is Lancaster’s attitude tward the new study?
A. Objective. B. Critical. C. Dismissive. D. Apprving.

adults but has an unclear rigin-children are naturally curius, cnstantly asking questins. ____36____
A 2025 study published in Psychlgical Science set ut t answer this questin. Researchers studied
infrmatin avidance and tested children aged 5 t 10 in scenaris where they culd chse t seek r avid
infrmatin. As expected, yunger children were highly curius and eager t learn, even if they later made selfish
chices. ____37____ Researchers explained that as children grw lder, they care mre abut appearing fair. By
aviding infrmatin, they create “mral wiggle rm” (道德回旋余地) t act selfishly while still seeming mral.
____38____ First, peple avid infrmatin t prtect themselves frm negative emtins. Secnd, it helps

These patterns cntinue int adulthd.
While ignrance may bring temprary cmfrt, it ften leads t serius lng-term csts. Aviding health

Early avidance in childhd can even cntribute t brader scial challenges. Repeatedly aviding
uncmfrtable ideas can lead t idelgical rigidity. ____40____ This “develpmental paradx” — frm curius

A. S hw t stay curius as adults?
B. S when and why d we becme selectively ignrant?
C. Hwever, lder children increasingly avid infrmatin, acting selfishly.
D. The study identified three main mtivatins behind infrmatin avidance.
E. Ignring climate change may feel safe, but threatens lng-term glbal stability.
F. In the end, the shrt-term relief pales in cmparisn t the lng-term cnsequences.
G. As research shws, this shift creates a “develpmental paradx” with lifelng effects.
