After ten years in Lndn, I recently relcated t Berlin, and as is custmary when making new friends, the questin “Where are yu frm?” tends t cme up. My hnest answer wuld be, “I dn’t really knw.”
The truth is, mst fus TCKs (Third Culture Kids) — a term cined t describe “children
wh mve between cultures befre they have had the pprtunity t fully develp their persnal and cultural identity” — had n chice grwing up but t fllw ur parents arund the wrld.
We’d ften be tld, “Pack yur bags, kids. We’re mving!” and in the blink f an eye, everything wuld change.
By the time I was 18, I had changed schls 10 times, mved cuntries at least 6 times,
acquired a cnfusing accent, and develped bth a lve f travel and a desire fr stability. Being an Indnesian-Italian, I ften felt an identity crisis weighing n me in my teens.
Mving t a new cuntry after spending ten years in the UK — the lngest I have lived
anywhere — has brught back feelings f this cultural cnfusin. Grwing up as a TCK isn’t as charming as many peple wuld expect. It is bth a blessing and a curse (诅咒), beautiful but
unpredictable, and full f adventures. This lack f rts and stability will likely cause issues later in life.
Yet kids are adaptable. After vercming culture shck, yu start t adjust and see the bigger picture. Yu learn that the wrld is much bigger than yu, and that yur prblems are small. Yu als learn respnsibility, respect different beliefs, and frm yur wn pinins.
Making friends and then lsing tuch teaches yu that everything is temprary.
Grwing up as a TCK, yu rarely realize hw adaptable yu are, until yur lder friends
ften cmment n hw “wise and mature” yu are fr yur age. Travelling frm a yung age
pens yur eyes beynd “Hypernrmalizatin”. It teaches that diversity is nthing t be afraid f. Grwing up as a TCK was tugh, but I wuldn’t trade it fr anything. It has shaped me t be the persn that I am tday — an actual “citizen f the wrld”.
4 .Hw des the authr usually respnd t “Where are yu frm”?
A .By stating her natinality directly. B .By admitting her uncertainty hnestly.
C .By explaining the TCK cncept briefly. D .By describing her experiences in detail.
5 .What des the authr say abut TCKs’ childhd?
A .They enjyed planning their mves.
B .They resisted their parents’ decisins.
C .They maintained their persnal lifestyle.
D .They were frced t adapt t sudden changes.
6 .Which f the fllwing can best describe TCKs’ experiences?
A .Tugh and cnfusing. B .Peaceful and predictable.
C .Rutine but eye-pening. D .Adventurus but beneficial.
7 .What can be a suitable title fr the text?
A .Grwing up as a TCK B .Challenges fr Migratin
      C .Hw t Becme a Glbal Citizen D .Hw t Adapt t Diverse Cultures
      C
Dctrs in Lndn have taken a majr step frward in medical science by helping children brn blind t see again thrugh the use f gene therapy. The treatment was designed fr a rare
inherited eye cnditin that affects the retina — the part f the eye respnsible fr transfrming light int signals the brain can understand.
The children in the treatment grup suffered frm a severe frm f retinal dystrphy (营养不良的) caused by a faulty gene. This fault meant that the light-sensing cells in their eyes culd nt functin prperly. As a result, these children were legally classified as blind, even thugh
sme culd still tell light frm dark.
In the new prcedure, surgens injected (注射) a healthy cpy f the faulty gene int ne eye during a keyhle peratin that lasted abut an hur. The gene was carried safely inside a
harmless virus and placed precisely in the light-sensitive layer f the retina. The gal was t help damaged cells recver their ability t respnd t light.
After the peratin, researchers mnitred the children’s prgress fr several years. The
results were published in a respected medical jurnal. Many families reprted remarkable
imprvements. One parent said that befre the treatment, his sn culd nt ntice bright bjects
even when they were held just inches frm his face. After the peratin, the by began t reach fr tys and recgnize peple at a shrt distance. He even reacted t sunlight shining thrugh a
windw — the first time he had shwn any respnse t light. Accrding t James Bainbridge, a senir retinal specialist invlved in the wrk, the therapy nt nly helps the eye cells t wrk
better but als encurages the brain t interpret visual signals mre effectively.
Althugh further research is still needed t cnfirm lng-term safety, the future f gene treatment fr visual disrders is bright with the ptential t revlutinize treatment ptins and bring new hpe t thse living with visual disabilities.
8 .What can we learn abut the faulty gene?
A .It makes the light-sensing cells perfrm prly.
B .It prevents peple distinguishing light frm dark.
C .It affects hw the brain transfrms the light signals.
D .It causes severe damage t the uter part f the eyes.
9 .Why is the treatment described as “a majr step frward”?
A .It shrtens the time needed fr eye surgery.
B .It remves a harmful virus frm the patients’ eyes.
C .It intends t cure the mst cmmn retinal diseases.
D .It helps address a certain eye prblem at its rt.
10 .Why des the authr mentin the father and his sn in paragraph 4?
A .T present the fact. B .T prve the effect.
C .T predict the trend. D .T explain the thery.
11 .What is the authr’s attitude tward the future f this treatment?
      A .Favrable. B .Indifferent. C .Dubtful. D .Unclear.

Experts have created an app that uses artificial intelligence t identify dinsaurs frm the ftprints they left behind millins f years ag.
“When we find a dinsaur ftprint, we try t d the Cinderella thing, and find the ft that matches the slipper,” said Prf Steve Brusatte. “But it’s nt s simple, because the shape depends nt nly n the dinsaur’s ft, but als the type f grund it was walking n, and the mtin f its ft.”
Previus AI systems based their learning n ftprints labelled as having been made by
particular dinsaurs. Hwever, if thse identificatins are incrrect then the AI system will als be prblematic. “Yu never find a ftprint and alngside it the dinsaur that made it,” said Dr
Gregr Hartmann. “S mst likely, sme f these labels are wrng.”
Taking a different apprach, the researchers fed their AI system with 2,000 unlabelled
ftprint shapes. The system then determined hw similar the imprints (压痕) were t each ther. They discvered eight features that reflected variatins in the imprints’ shapes, such as the spread
f the tes and heel psitin.
The team turned the system int a free app called DinTracker that allws users t uplad
ftprint shapes and explre the ftprints mst similar t them. The AI system supprted what
dinsaur experts had nticed: a set f ftprints frm the Triassic and early Jurassic perid were
remarkably bird-like, despite being 60 millin years lder than the ldest bird bnes. Brusatte said this shwed the similarities were nt just wishful thinking. “If these tracks were made by birds,
that wuld mean birds have a much lder ancestry than we used t think.”
Hwever, it was far frm case clsed. Brusatte added, “I suspect it is mre likely these
tracks were made by ther dinsaurs with very bird-like feet.” Dr Jens Ballensack ffered anther explanatin: the features identified by the new system were nt necessarily based n the shape f the ft itself and the bird-like shape may result frm a regular dinsaur’s ft sinking int sft
grund. “They are nt evidence fr an early appearance f birds,” he said.
12 .What makes it difficult t identify dinsaur ftprints?
A .The missing bnes alngside ftprints. B .The sft grund where dinsaurs walked.
C.Unpredictable mvements f dinsaur feet. D.Varius cnditins affecting ftprint shapes. 13 .Why did the researchers use unlabelled ftprint shapes?
A .Because mst labels were incrrect.
B .T test the similarities f the imprints.
C .T avid being misled by wrng labels.
D .Because AI wrks better with unlabelled data.
14 .What did the AI discver abut the ftprints frm the Triassic perid?
A .They had eight new features. B .They were left by early birds.
C .They were strikingly bird-like. D .They were 60 millin years ld.
15 .What can be inferred frm the last paragraph?
A .Experts place full reliance n this app.
B .The ftprints were made by early birds.
C .The system fthe app has its limitatins.
D .The results changed ur knwledge f birds.

Fr many kids, setting a big gal and achieving it can feel like climbing a slippery hill.
16 Teaching children t create gals that are specific, measurable, achievable, relevant, and time-bund builds a can-d attitude and helps them face bstacles in life.
SMART gals decnstruct larger gals int smaller, actinable steps. They remve
guesswrk and make gals easier t track. 17 Fr example, an unclear gal like “d
better at math” can be reframed as “practice multiplicatin tables fr 10 minutes after dinner every day”.
When yu set SMART gals with kids, the key is t keep them cllabrative and simple.
18 They can make kids feel verwhelmed, s it’s better t fcus n ne simple gal at a time until it becmes a habit.
It’s als imprtant t avid cmmn mistakes. 19 Praising nly the results instead f the effrt will make kids discuraged when they face setbacks. What’s mre, dn’t set gals fr yur kids — let them take wnership f their wn gals.
Setting the gal is just the first step; sticking t it is mre imprtant. 20 Regular check-ins, celebrating small prgress and adjusting gals when needed can all help kids stay n track with their SMART gals. In the end, SMART gals are nt just abut achieving smething, but abut building life skills like time management and self-discipline fr kids.
A .Gals shuld be specific and detailed.
