Paul Edward Farmer Jr. was brn n Oct. 26, 1959, in Nrth Adams, Mass. When Paul was arund 12, his father bught an ld bus and cnverted it int a mbile hme. Paul, his parents and his five siblings spent the next few years traveling.
One summer, he and his family wrked alngside Haitian migrant wrkers picking ranges, listening curiusly as they chatted t ne anther in Crele. That was Paul’s first encunter with Haiti, the cuntry that wuld appeal t him in his 20s and then direct him tward a career in public health.
After graduating frm Duke University, he mved t Haiti, vlunteering in Cange. He arrived when Haiti’s hspital system was s threadbare that patients had t pay fr basic supplies, like medical glves. He said he was really taken aback by the situatin and decided t pen a different kind f clinic. Over the years, Dr. Farmer raised millins f dllars fr an ever-expanding netwrk f cmmunity health facilities.
The clinic in Haiti, at first a single rm, grew ver the years t a netwrk f 16 medical centers in the cuntry, with a lcal staff f almst 7, 000. Amng them was a teaching hspital pened in 2013. There, pr patients with difficult diseases paid a basic fee f arund $1.50 a day fr treatment, including medicatin.
Partners in Health he funded with the the ther three als expanded int Rwanda, where Dr. Farmer helped the gvernment restructure the cuntry’s health system, imprving health utcmes in areas. Dr. Farmer als helped develp new public health appraches in Peru, Russia and Lesth, amng ther places.
Over the years, he kept in tuch with many f his patients. “He had a very tender heart,“ said Laurie Nuell, a clse friend and bard directr at Partners in Health. ”Seeing pain and suffering was very hard fr him. By age 2, mst kids knw hw t play pretend. They turn their bedrms int faraway castles and hld make-believe tea parties. The ability t make smething ut f nthing may seem uniquely human. Nw, fr the first time, an experiment hints that an ape (猿) living under human care can have an imaginatin.
Kanzi is an ape wh was raised in a lab and became a star at cmmunicating with humans using graphic symbls. Scientists wndered whether Kanzi had the capacity t play pretend — that is, act like smething is real while knwing it’s nt. They adapted the playbk fr studying yung children t stage a juice party fr Kanzi. They pured imaginary juice int tw cups and then pretended t empty just ne. They asked Kanzi which cup he wanted, and he pinted t the cup still cntaining pretend juice 68% f the time.
T make sure Kanzi wasn’t cnfusing real with fake (假的), they als ran a test with actual juice. “Kanzi chse the real juice ver the pretend almst 80% f the time, which suggests that he really can tell the difference between real juice and imaginary juice,” said Amalia Basts, a study c-authr frm the University f St. Andrews in Sctland.
But nt all scientists are cnvinced that Kanzi is playing pretend as humans d. “There’s a difference between imagining juice being pured int a cup and maintaining the pretense that it’s real,” said Duke University cmparative psychlgist Michael Tmasell. “T be cnvinced f that, I wuld need t see Kanzi actually pretend t pur water int a cntainer himself,” Tmasell wrte in an email.
Many great ape species in the wild are critically endangered, and it’ll take mre research t understand what their minds are capable f. “Kanzi pened this path fr a lt f future studies,” Basts said.
8. What was Kanzi asked t d in the first test?
A. T read a playbk.B. T chse a certain cup.
C. T pur imaginary juice.D. T identify graphic symbls.
9. Why did scientists experiment with real juice n Kanzi?
A. T prve Kanzi has emtins.
B. T explre Kanzi’s preference fr juice.
C. T cnfirm Kanzi can tell real frm fake.
D. T train Kanzi’s ability t make chices.
10. What des Michael Tmasell prbably agree with?
A. Imaginatin equals pretense.
B. Kanzi represents ape intelligence.
C. Kanzi may nt have an imaginatin.
D. This experiment benefits future studies.
11. What is the best title fr the text?
A. Kanzi: A Gd Ape Pretender.
B. The Mystery f Ape Imaginatin Slved.
C. The Mind f a Human-Raised Ape Revealed.
D. A Pretend Juice Party: Ape Imaginatin Tested.

A cmputer that relies n fungal (真菌的) netwrks t stre infrmatin culd ne day be an alternative t the current generatin f memry devices, accrding t research published in PLOS One.
Scientists have built wrking memristrs (忆阻器) — circuitry elements that “remember” their past electrical activity — frm the rt-like part f a mushrm called the mycelium. The result is a memristr with perfrmance cmparable t that f a silicn-based chip, but it has its wn benefits in ways many cmputer cmpnents tday d nt.
“Being able t develp micrchips that act like real brain cells means yu dn’t need a lt f pwer when the machine isn’t being used,” says lead researcher Jhn LaRcc f Ohi State University. “That can bring a huge ptential advantage.”
Scientists have thught abut using mushrms as cmputer parts, mstly because fungal netwrks wrk in ways similar t neural systems. They have a similar structure. And they send infrmatin using electrical and chemical signals, just like a brain. But the fact that they aren’t actually brains means sme engineering is needed t make them d what scientists need them t d.
The team grew the mushrm mycelium under cntrlled cnditins. Then they dried the samples in sunlight t ensure lng-term stability. Finally, they cnnected them t a circuit t test their perfrmance. “We wuld cnnect electrical wires at different pints n the mushrms,” LaRcc says. “Depending n the vltage (电压) and cnnectivity, we were seeing different perfrmances.”
The researchers achieved a perfrmance f 5,850 Hertz, with an accuracy f 90 percent frm their mushrm memristr - that is, it switches signals at a speed f abut 5,850 times per secnd. The researchers als fund that as the electrical vltage increased, the mushrm’s perfrmance decreased. They were able t fix it by adding mre mushrms t the circuit.
Yu’re nt ging t have a mycelial cmputer any time sn. Still, the findings d suggest that this is a prmising path fr future research. As the researchers nte in their paper, “The future f cmputing culd be fungal.”
12. What can be learned abut wrking memristrs built frm mycelium?
A. They are shaped like real mushrms.
B. They need less pwer when nt wrking.
C. They perfrm much better than traditinal chips.
D. They have becme a new way t stre infrmatin.
13. Why d scientists chse mushrms as cmputer cmpnents?
A. They have brain-like wrking netwrks.
B. They can prcess infrmatin like humans.
C. They grw quickly in cntrlled cnditins.
D. They can wrk with electrical signals alne.
14. What d the findings n mushrm memristrs shw?
A. Higher vltage imprves accuracy.
B. Cnnectivity has n influence n results.
C. They remain stable when vltage changes.
D. Netwrk expansin imprves their perfrmance.
15. What is the text mainly abut?
A. Challenges f creating bilgical cmputer chips.
B. Advantages f mushrm-based memry devices.
C. A cmparisn between fungal and neural netwrks.
D. A breakthrugh in develping bi-cmputing cmpnents.

It was a far cry frm the beautiful playgrunds she remembered frm her wn childhd.
Rather than cmplaining abut it, Mrs. Thmpsn decided t d smething abut it. She didn’t have any grand plans r special expertise. She simply had an idea — a visin fr a better playgrund where kids culd play and families culd gather. Mrs. Thmpsn started small, ging dr-t-dr, talking t neighbrs, and explaining her idea. At first, sme peple were dubtful. The twn was struggling with budget cuts and didn’t have much extra mney fr a playgrund verhaul. But Mrs. Thmpsn’s passin was infectius. She listened t everyne’s cncerns and patiently respnded t them. She made it clear that this wasn’t just her prject but smething the whle cmmunity culd benefit frm.
Mrs. Thmpsn’s determinatin was quite strng. She tirelessly fundraised, rganized bake sales, car washes, and even held a small-twn fair t raise mney. She faced cuntless difficulties — funding challenges, lgistical issues, and smetimes just sheer dubt frm thers. But she never gave up and her determinatin slwly began t draw mre and mre peple int her cause. Neighbrs started pitching in, dnating time, skills, and mney. A lcal cnstructin cmpany ffered t d the heavy lifting fr free. Businesses cntributed materials, and parents vlunteered t paint, build, and clean up.
