Better Cnnectivity Increases Reef Abundance
Research led by the University f Oxfrd has fund that the mvement and exchange f water between different parts f the cean — ceangraphic cnnectivity — is a key influence fr fish abundance (丰富性) acrss the Western Indian Ocean (WIO). The findings have been published in ICES Jurnal f Marine Science.
In the study, cnnectivity had a special impact n plant-eating reef (礁石) fish grups, which ffer several key benefits t reefs. Fr example, they eat seaweeds that cmpete with crals (珊瑚). This shws that decisin-makers shuld add cnnectivity t cean prtected area management acrss cuntries. It is especially imprtant in the human-pressured WIO regin. Mst cral reefs there may face yearly cral bleaching (白化) by the middle f the century, even under ptimistic climate change mdels. Prtecting reefs is necessary in this area, especially fr lcal cmmunities. They rely heavily n reefs: small-sized fisheries prvide up t 99% f their prtein and abut 82% f their husehld incme. As the ppulatin grws fast, lcals face mre and mre risks frm climate change. It culd destry reefs thrugh cral bleaching.
The researchers develped a map f ceangraphic cnnectivity t simplify cmplex ceangraphic mdels. Typically, acrss the study reef sites, medium cnnectivity levels were assciated with higher fish abundance, rather than high levels. High cnnectivity may help with the spread f cral seaweeds but can cme with side effects, such as increased freign species.
Lead authr Michael Bnsall added, “Our wrk emphasizes hw crucial this link is between cean currents and fish eclgy fr understanding the brader impact f envirnmental change and fishing rules n sensitive cral reef fish systems.”
The researchers nw plan t explre the impacts f human activities and find ut hw envirnmental and ceangraphic factrs are predicted t change under different climate change mdels, and hw fish abundance will be affected.
32. What is the rle f plant-eating reef fish in cral reef ecsystems?
A. They stp the spread f ther fish.B. They help maintain cral reefs.
C. They reduce cean temperatures.D. They cntribute t seaweed grwth.
33. Why is prtecting reefs in the WIO particularly significant?
A. Reefs are critical t the lcal ecnmy.B. The regin lacks large-sized fisheries.
C. Fish prductin is naturally lw in this regin.D. It is beneficial t ceangraphic cnnectivity.
34. What can be learned abut medium cnnectivity levels?
A. They wrsen cral bleaching.B. They result in larger fish ppulatin.
C. They bring abut freign fish greatly.D. They imprve the nutritinal value f fish.
35. What is ne gal f future research by the team?
