“Why d peple enjy saying that they are bad at math?” wnders Petra Bnfert, a prfessr f engineering at Dartmuth Cllege. After seeing t many examples f adults “passing n mathematical anxiety like a virus,” Bnfert has an imprtant message fr math-phbic parents and educatrs: “We are passing n frm generatin t generatin the fear fr mathematics.”
Many peple hld the view that math is inherently hard, and nly peple with an inbrn mathematical ability can understand it. While well-meaning adults may think they’re encuraging kids by sharing their wn math fears, research has shwn the ppsite. Research has fund that the prblem is particularly significant fr girls, wh “are especially affected when a teacher publicly annunces math hatred befre she picks up the chalk.” Mrever, a study published recently reprted that female mathematical achievement was diminished in respnse t a female teacher’s mathematical anxiety. The effect was crrelated: the higher a teacher’s anxiety, the lwer the scres.”
Parents’ anxiety abut math can have a similar effect n kids’ achievement and their attitude tward the subject. Children wh received math hmewrk help frm mathematically fearful parents shwed weaker math achievements than their peers, which in turn resulted in increased math anxiety fr the children themselves. Rather, what is required is perseverance, a willingness t take risks and feeling safe t make mistakes.
32.Why d sme peple share their math fear with kids?
A.T expect kids t learn frm their mistake.B.T prve nly geniuses can learn it well.
