When I arrived in China t teach law, I didn’t expect t bring hme with s much tea. Nr did I anticipate what the tea wuld cme t mean.
Sme f the mst memrable mments f my time in China happened with a teacup in hand. In Chengdu, tw students had wn the prize I dnated t a public-interest charity auctin (拍卖): a day trip with me anywhere in China that we culd reach and return frm in 24 hurs. They chse Chengdu fr the pandas and the spice, but befre lunch we sat fr tea in Daci Temple. The students made it carefully, perfrming each step frm memry. When I asked why they washed the cups and threw away the first batch, they hesitated. It’s what their parents and grandparents d, they said. And they learned it frm their parents, and s n. The ritual wasn’t abut cleanliness r flavr. It was abut cntinuity — perfrming a gesture as cuntless hands had dne befre. It was a quiet ceremny f cnnectin.
In Quanzhu, I was explring the histrical district with a teaching assistant, when we wandered int a tiny studi. Inside, a cuple made prcelain teapts and cups s fine they were nearly see-thrugh. They invited us t sit fr tea, and we talked fr mre than an hur — nt abut the wares r prices, but abut life, family, travel, and dreams. It was a reminder that tea, in China, is as much a language f friendship as it is a drink.
In all these mments, I saw smething — a drink that cmmands respect nt just because f its flavr, but because f its meaning. In the West, we ften treat tea as functinal: smething t energize r calm. In China, tea is relatinal. It is f family. It is frmal. Even when shared casually between friends, it carries an unspken respect.
4. What des the wrd “ritual” in paragraph 2 prbably refer t?
A. A set f actins perfrmed regularly. B. A methd f making tea taste better.
C. A rule abut cleanliness during meals.D. A habit f saving time in daily life.

A. It is ften used as a tpic fr business talks.B. It encurages peple t fcus n tea quality.
C. It helps start cnversatins n persnal tpics.D. It is mainly enjyed fr its delicate appearance.
6. Accrding t the authr, which statement crrectly describes Western tea culture?
A. It emphasizes family bnds. B. It priritizes histrical traditins.
C. It serves as a language f friendship.D. It fcuses n physical health benefits.
7. Which f the fllwing is the best title fr the text?
A. The Art f Making Chinese Tea B. Tea as a Cultural Bridge in China
C. Drinking Tea: A Western Perspective D. Tea and Health: Stries frm China

As peple start new fitness rutines in the new year, new research suggests that even a shrt burst f intense exercise culd play a rle in prtecting against cancer. Scientists reprt that as little as 10 minutes f intense physical activity may help slw cancer grwth.
Researchers at Newcastle University discvered that exercise raises the levels f several small mlecules (分子) in the bld. When scientists expsed bwel cancer cells in the lab t bld cntaining these exercise-driven mlecules, they bserved widespread genetic changes. Mre than 1,300 genes shifted their activity, including genes invlved in DNA repair, energy prductin, and cancer cell grwth. The findings help clarify hw physical activity may lwer bwel cancer risk. The research shws that exercise sends mlecular signals thrugh the bldstream that influence genes cntrlling tumr (肿瘤) grwth and genetic stability.
The research team further fund that exercise increased the activity f genes that supprt cell energy prductin. This helps cells use xygen mre efficiently. At the same time, genes linked t rapid cell divisin were dwn-regulated, which may make cancer cells less harmful. Bld cllected after exercise als bsted DNA repair, turning n a key repair gene.
T test these mlecular prcesses, the study included 30 vlunteers, bth men and wmen between the ages f 50 and 78. All participants were verweight but therwise healthy. Each vlunteer cmpleted a shrt but intense cycling test that lasted abut 10 minutes. Researchers then cllected bld samples and examined 249 prteins. Thirteen f thse prteins increased after exercise.
Dr. Sam, lead authr f the study, said: “What’s remarkable is that exercise desn’t just benefit healthy tissues; it als sends pwerful signals thrugh the bldstream that can directly influence thusands f genes in cancer cells. It’s an exciting insight because it pens the dr t finding ways that cpy r augment the bilgical effects f exercise, ptentially imprving cancer treatment and, crucially, patient utcmes. In the future, these insights culd lead t new treatments that cpy the beneficial effects f exercise n hw cells repair damaged DNA and use fuel fr energy.”
8. What is the authr’s purpse in writing paragraph 1?
A. T lead in a tpic. B. T explain data.
C. T highlight ne example.D. T intrduce the backgrund.
9. Hw may intense exercise help slw cancer grwth?
A. By directly killing cancer cells. B. By changing gene activity in cells.
C. By increasing xygen levels in bld.D. By reducing verweight peple’s cancer risks.
10. What is the third paragraph mainly abut?
A. Why cancer cells becme less harmful.B. Hw exercise imprves cell energy use.
C. The rle f prteins in cancer preventin.D. Exercise’s effects n genes and DNA repair.
11. What is Dr. Sam’s attitude twards the research?
A. Slightly dubtful.B. Objectively neutral.C. Highly enthusiastic.D. Cautiusly ptimistic.
D
Researchers have built the smallest fully prgrammable autnmus rbts ever created. These machines can swim thrugh liquid, sense their surrundings, respnd n their wn, and perate fr mnths at a time. Pwered entirely by light, the rbts cntain minicmputers that allw them t fllw prgrammed paths, detect lcal temperature changes, and adjust their mvement in respnse.
As is knwn, fish and ther large swimmers mve by pushing water backward, generating frward mtin. The tiny rbts take a very different apprach. These rbts generate an electrical field that gently pushes charged bits in the surrunding liquid. As thse charged bits mve, they drag nearby tiny water mlecules with them, effectively creating mtin in the liquid arund the rbt.
True autnmy requires mre than mvement. A rbt must als be able t sense its envirnment, make decisins, and pwer itself. All f thse parts must fit nt a chip that is nly a small part f a millimeter acrss.
One f the biggest prblems was pwer. “The key challenge fr the electrnics,” Blaauw, a researcher, says, “is that the slar bards are tiny and prduce nly 75 nanwatts (纳瓦) f pwer.” T make the system wrk, the team designed specialized circuits that perate at extremely lw vltages (电压), cutting pwer cnsumptin by mre than 1,000 times.
Space was anther majr limitatin. The slar bards take up mst f the rbt’s surface, leaving very little rm fr cmputing hardware. T slve this, the researchers redesigned hw the rbt’s sftware wrks. “We squeezed what wuld usually require many instructins fr mvement cntrl int a single, special instructin t reduce the prgram’s length t fit in the rbt’s tiny memry space,” Blaauw explains.
Tgether, these advances prduced what the researchers believe is the first sub-millimeter rbt capable f real decisin-making. “This is really just the first chapter,” says Blaauw. “We’ve shwn that yu can put a brain, a sensr and a mtr int smething almst t small t see, and have it survive and wrk fr mnths. Once yu have that fundatin, yu can layer n all kinds f intelligence and functinality. It pens the dr t a whle new future fr mini-rbts.”
12. What mainly pwers the tiny rbts?
A. Batteries.B. Water flw.C. Slar bards.D. Electric fields.
13. What guarantees the rbt’s true autnmy?
A. Big memry space.B. Integrated key parts.C. Lng prgram length.D. Single mvement step.
14. What was the key challenge fr the rbts’ electrnics?
A. Limited memry space. B. High vltage requirements.
C. Extremely lw pwer supply.D. Unstable temperature cntrl.
15. What is the main significance f the research accrding t Blaauw?
A. Creating lng-lasting micr-batteries.B. Develping new slar pwer systems.
C. Achieving full autmatin in large rbts.D. Enabling intelligence in nearly invisible rbts.
