Vilent cnflicts and desertificatin — the prcess by which rich land becmes desert — have made huge amunts f land unsuitable fr farming.
      Bichemist Samsn Ogble is ppularly knwn as Nigeria’s smart farmer. He and his team are grwing crps withut sil at the technlgy-based farm they started three years ag in Abekuta. “We are putting an end t seasnal fd shrtage in Nigeria,” said Ogble, “Because we are the nes cntrlling everything that the plant requires — we are nt depending n seasns. S it’s n lnger seasnal farming. It is just farming anytime f the year, meaning yu can plant anytime f the year. We can harvest anytime f the year,” said Ogble.
      But setting up the aerpnic farm was nt easy. It required mre than $210,000. And sme peple in Abekuta were very much against this nn-traditinal methd f farming. “It tk a lt f effrt t change peple’s minds abut aerpnics,” said Ogble.
      In Nigeria, abut 30 millin hectares f farmland is being used, instead f the 78. 5 millin hectares required fr fd security. A study fund that water in bttles used by adults went frm abut 75,000 bacteria per milliliter in the mrning t ver 1-2 millin by the end f the day. Cntaminatin ften cmes frm the drinker’s hands, muth, and the utside f the bttle. Thse wh dn’t wash their hands regularly may intrduce harmful germs int their bttles.
      While mst bacteria are harmless, they can pse risks, especially fr individuals with weakened immune systems.
