In the eight-mile jurney, I crssed the same railrad track five times, giving the pssibility f getting caught by the same train five times. Rather than feeling excited by this drive thrugh the muntains, I fund it depressing. The pverty level was shcking and the small shabby huses gave me the greatest feeling f hpelessness.
Frm the mment f my arrival at the little schl, all glm (忧郁) disappeared. Upn arriving at Drthy’s classrm, I was greeted with smiling faces and treated like a queen. Peple cnsistently underestimate hw much thers in their scial circle might appreciate an unexpected phne call, text r email just t say hell, and the mre surprising the cnnectin, the greater the appreciatin, accrding t a new study.

Peple wh recalled reaching ut thught the gesture was significantly less appreciated than thse wh recalled receiving a cmmunicatin.
In ther experiments, participants sent a shrt nte, r a small gift, t smene in their scial circle with whm they had nt interacted in a while. Similar t the previus experiment, participants wh initiated (发起) cntact were asked t rate n a 7-pint scale the extent t which they thught the recipient wuld appreciate r feel grateful fr the cntact. After the ntes r gifts were sent, researchers als asked the recipients t rate their appreciatin.
Acrss all experiments, thse wh initiated the cmmunicatin significantly underestimated the extent t which recipients wuld appreciate the act f reaching ut. Besides, the researchers fund that peple receiving the cmmunicatin placed greater fcus than thse initiating the cmmunicatin n the surprise element, and this heightened fcus n surprise was assciated with higher appreciatin. “We als fund that peple underestimated thers’ appreciatin t a greater extent when the cmmunicatin was mre surprising, as ppsed t part f a regular cmmunicatin pattern, r the scial ties between the tw participants were weak,” added lead authr Peggy Liu.
Initiating scial cntact after a prlnged perid f discnnectin can be daunting because peple wrry abut hw such a gesture might be received. But these findings suggest that their hesitatins may be unnecessary, as thers are likely t appreciate being reached ut t mre than peple think.

D. One making regular cntacts with thers.

Research shws that when scial media use is high, depressin is als high. But the questin is — is that because scial media causes that persn t be depressed? Or is it because peple wh are depressed tend t als use scial media mre, and spend less time exercising and being in green spaces? “That is what we wanted t understand,” says Carl Vidal, the first authr f the study, a child and adlescent psychiatrist at Jhns Hpkins Children’s Center.

At each pint, participants self-reprted depressive symptms based n the PHQ-9 — a nine-item scale (表) that is cmmnly used t measure depressin — as well as scial media use, green space expsure, and physical activity.
Researchers fund that participants wh had higher scial media use tended t be mre depressed, and peple wh were mre depressed als tended t use scial media mre. Hwever, researchers fund that scial media use did nt cause an increase r decrease in depressive symptm levels ver time.
Researchers als fund that higher levels f scial media use and higher levels f depressive symptms were assciated with lwer levels f green space expsure. In additin, higher eveningness was als assciated with higher depressive symptm levels.
One study authr says these results shw scial media use and depressin are assciated, but d nt prvide evidence that greater scial media use predicts an increase in depressive symptms ver time. Other prfessinals in the team als say these findings indicate peple wh suffer frm depressin shuld be careful abut the amunt f time they spend n scial media and shuld be encuraged t integrate ther healthy habits int their lifestyle.

A. By using a nine-item frm called PHQ-9.
B. By bserving the participants’ daily behavir.
C. By asking the participants’ friends and families.
D. By analyzing the participants’ scial media psts.
14. What d the researchers advise peple with depressin t d?
