When yu lk at the clrful rws f fruits and vegetables in the grcery stre, yu might think yu’re getting all the nutrients yu need. But recent studies shw that tday’s crps have fewer nutrients than what ur grandparents ate decades ag. This decline is alarming and culd affect ur health in the future.
Over the past 70 years, many fruits, vegetables, and grains have lst significant amunts f prtein, calcium, irn, and vitamins. A review in the jurnal Fds in 2024 called this a majr challenge fr future generatins. This is especially imprtant as mre peple are encuraged t eat plant-based diets fr health and envirnmental reasns.
David Mntgmery, a prfessr at the University f Washingtn, warns that this nutrient decline means ur fd is less effective at preventing chrnic (慢性的) diseases. Even if yu eat lts f fresh prduce, what yu’re eating tday is less nutritius than what yur grandparents ate, says Kristie Ebi, an expert in climate change and health.
The prblem lies in mdern farming practices. Methds that increase crp harvest ften harm sil health. Irrigatin, fertilizatin, and harvesting prevent the natural interactins between plants and sil fungi (真菌), reducing nutrient absrptin. Climate change and rising carbn dixide levels als play a rle in lwering nutrient cntent.
A majr study in 2004 fund that 43 garden crps had less prtein, calcium, irn, and vitamin C cmpared t 50 years earlier. Mre recent studies shw similar trends in Australian vegetables and wheat, with significant drps in irn and prtein.
This nutrient decline affects nt just plant-based diets but als meat. Animals nw eat less nutritius grasses and grains, making meat and dairy prducts less nutritius t.
Scientists urge us nt t wrry t much but t pay attentin t hw ur fd is grwn. Mntgmery says understanding the impact f farming practices gives us a new reasn. As the ppulatin grws, we need t prtect and restre ur farmland t ensure healthy fd fr everyne.
      28. Why des the authr mentin what ur grandparents ate?
      A. T criticize mdern diets.B. T cmpare farming csts.
      C. T highlight nutrient lss.D. T prmte traditinal recipes.

      A. They put sil health first.B. They imprve crp variety.
      C. They reduce carbn dixide.D. They ruin disease preventin.
      30. What is scientists’ advice abut nutrient decline?
      A. Caring abut agriculture.B. Fcusing n fd quantity.
      C. Aviding plant-based diets.D. Eating less prcessed fds.

      B. The cnsequence f plant-based diets.
      C. The wrsening health cnditins f humans.

There are psitive effects f having deep cnversatins with strangers, published in the Jurnal f Persnality and Scial Psychlgy.
“Cnnecting with thers in meaningful ways tends t make peple happier, and yet peple als seem reluctant t engage in deeper and mre meaningful cnversatins,” said Nichlas Epley, a prfessr f behaviural science at the University f Chicag. “This struck us as an interesting scial paradx: If cnnecting with thers in deep and meaningful ways increases well-being, then why aren’t peple ding it mre ften in daily life?”
T answer that questin, Epley and his clleagues designed several experiments, where pairs f peple — mainly strangers — were asked t discuss either relatively deep r shallw tpics. Befre the cnversatins, participants predicted hw awkward they thught the cnversatins wuld be, hw cnnected they thught they wuld feel t their cnversatin partner and hw much they wuld enjy the cnversatins. Afterwards, they rated hw awkward the cnversatins actually were, hw cnnected they actually felt and hw much enjyment they actually experienced. Generally, the researchers fund that bth deep and shallw cnversatins felt less awkward and led t greater feelings f cnnectedness and enjyment than the participants had expected. That effect tended t be strnger fr deep cnversatins.
If deep cnversatins are better, then why aren’t peple actually having mre f them? The researchers suspected it might be because peple underestimate hw interested strangers are in learning abut their deeper thughts and feelings. In sme f the experiments, the researchers asked participants t predict hw interested their cnversatin partner wuld be in the discussin, and then afterwards t indicate hw interested their partner actually was in the discussin. On average, peple cnsistently underestimated hw interested their partners wuld be in learning abut them.
“Peple seemed t imagine that revealing smething meaningful abut themselves in cnversatin wuld be met with blank stares and silence, nly t find this wasn’t true in the actual cnversatin,” Epley said.
“Human beings are deeply scial and tend t respnd in cnversatin. If yu share smething imprtant, yu are likely t get smething imprtant exchanged in return, leading t a cnsiderably better cnversatin.”
      32. What des the underlined wrd “paradx” in paragraph 2 mean?
      A. Cmplicatin.B. Cherence.C. Transfrmatin.D. Cntradictin.
      33. What d we knw abut the experiments?
      A. Nt all the tpics discussed were deep nes.
      B. The experiments were carried ut n a regular basis.
      C. Mst f the participants are familiar with each ther.
      D. The participants made predictins while in cnversatin.
      34. Accrding t the study, what actually hlds back deep cnversatins between strangers?
      A. Depth f the tpic.B. Peple’s predictin.
      C. Peple’s interest.D. Cnsistency f the talk.
      35. What may the text advcate?
      A. Giving active respnses in cnversatin.
      B. Making safe predictins in cmmunicatin.
      C. Engaging in mre cnversatins t be sciable.
      D. Striking up in-depth cnversatins with strangers.
