      Past Tense Verbs
Yu’ll als find sme differences with past frms f irregular verbs. The past tense f “learn” in American English is “learned”. British English has the ptin(选择) f “learned” r “learnt”. The same rule applies t “dreamed” and “dreamt”, “burned” and “burnt”, and “leaned” and “leant”. Americans tend t use the -ed ending; Brits tend t use the-t ending.
      Spelling
There are hundreds f slight spelling differences between British and American English. Nah Webster, an authr, plitician and teacher, made an effrt t refrm English spelling in the late 1700s.
Webster wanted t spell wrds the way they sunded. Yu can see Webster’s legacy(遗产) in the American spelling f wrds like clr (frm clur), hnr (frm hnur), and labr(frm labur).
      Nt S Different After All
British and American English have far mre similarities than differences. With the exceptin f sme reginal dialects, mst Brits and Americans can understand each ther withut t much difficulty. Out in the living rm, a large table wuld already be laid ut, cmplete with fancy tableclth, ready-made dumpling fillings, and dishes full f candy, fruits and sunflwer seeds. Sme f the dishes were t be ffered t ur ancestrs later, while thers were fr neighbrs and children t eat befre the evening feast. I must have learned hw t crack sunflwer seeds back then.
I dn’t think it’s right t criticize ne’s chice in fd r eating habits, n matter hw strange they may seem.
It’s nt nly in China. When I went abrad, I fund peple had all kinds f strange habits when it came t fd. In Denmark, they put salted red fish n bread and eat it fr dinner, n matter hw much it ruins yur breath. They think it’s a delicacy (美味佳肴), and it’s cnnected t their certain culture. Earthquakes are amng the mst mysterius and terrifying natural disasters. While we can smetimes predict majr nes, thers strike withut warning, devastating cities and causing fires, landslides and tsunamis. With climate change leading t increased wildfires and hurricanes, culd it als make earthquakes mre cmmn?
The mst dangerus earthquakes are tectnic earthquakes, caused by the mvement f Earth’s tectnic plates. These plates shift abut 1.5 centimeters per year due t internal heat, building pressure until they suddenly mve, which releases energy and causes earthquakes.
Unlike ther disasters, it’s almst impssible t predict when earthquakes will happen, making planned evacuatins next t impssible.
Unfrtunately, climate change culd make quakes happen clser tgether and with mre intensity, experts tld Live Science. With glbal warming, glaciers are melting at an increased rate. When melted glacier water flws ff land and int the sea, the land that used t sit underneath it rises, said Jhn Cassidy, an earthquake seismlgist at the Gelgical Survey f Canada and the University f Victria.
Mre cncerning than glacial-melt earthquakes are thse that culd be caused by an increase in sea level. As sea levels rise, pressure underwater n the seaflr als ges up, said Marc Bhnhff, a gephysicist at GFZ Helmhltz Centre Ptsdam and Free University Berlin in Germany. As water pressure spikes, the pressure n fault lines near the cast will als increase.
Even if we stpped using greenhuse gases nw, it wuld take up t 1,000 years fr sea level rise t stp, Bhnhff added. He predicts that ver that time, the gaps between big castal earthquakes will becme shrter.
Cassidy is uncertain if sea level rise will cause giant quakes t happen faster within ur lifetimes. He emphasized that climate change will make them mre dangerus. “It’s an imprtant tpic, and ne that I’m sure we’ll see a lt f infrmatin cming ut n in the cming mnths and years,” he said. “But n matter what we’ve discvered, it’s nt gd news.”
      12. What des the article tell us abut tectnic earthquakes?
      A. They are easier t predict than thers.
      B. They happen mstly near castal areas.
      C. They result frm the shifting f Earth’s plates.
      D. They rarely lead t ther natural disasters.
      13. What des the underlined wrd “it” in paragraph 4 refer t?
      A. The land.B. The glacier.C. The quake.D. The sea.
      14. What des Bhnhff imply?
      A. Human actins have lng-term effects.
      B. Castal areas will be safer ver time.
      C. Earthquakes will becme mre predictable.
      D. Sea level rise will eventually stabilize.
      15. What’s the best title fr the passage?
      A. The Frmatin and Predictin f Earthquakes
      B. Climate Change and Its Ptential Impact n Earthquakes
      C. Hw Sea Level Rise Affects Castal areas
      D. The Dangers f Tectnic Earthquakes
