Every driver wh frequently the pass knws t call him when they find a vehicle that has run ut f fuel r slipped ff the rad. He delivers fd t the passengers, calls the clsest mechanic and sends a lcal taxi driver t bring them t the cmfrt f the htel.
As fur men walked int the htel, Bastani ffered them a fresh pt f tea and sme bread. When the driver asked abut the cnditins f the rad, Bastani related the stry f a serius accident nly days earlier, after a bus withut chains n its tires had slid ff the rad int a small ditch (沟). All f its passengers gt ff except fr an lder wman wh stayed n bard, nt wanting t wait in knee-deep snw. But befre Bastani and his men culd mve the bus back nt the rad, it suddenly slid farther dwn and fell ff a cliff (悬崖).

Staying psitive thrugh the cld seasn culd be the best defence against getting sick, a new study suggests.
In an experiment that expsed healthy vlunteers t a cld r flu virus, researchers fund that peple with a generally sunny character were less likely t fall ill.
The findings, published in the jurnal Psychsmatic Medicine, build n evidence that a “psitive emtinal style” can help ward ff the cmmn cld and ther illnesses.
“Peple with a psitive emtinal style may have different immune (免疫的) respnses t the virus,” explained lead study authr Dr Sheldn Chen f Carnegie Melln University in Pittsburgh.
Chen and his clleagues had fund in a previus study that happier peple seemed less likely t catch a cld, but sme questins remained as t whether the emtinal quality itself had the effect.
Fr the new study, the researchers had 193 healthy adults cmplete standard measures f persnality qualities, physical health and “emtinal style”.
Thse wh tended t be happy, energetic and easy-ging were judged as having a psitive emtinal style, while thse wh were ften unhappy, tense and hstile (故意的) had a negative style.
Afterwards, the researchers gave them nse drps cntaining either a cld virus r a particular flu virus that causes flu-like symptms. Over the next six days, the vlunteers reprted n any aches, pains, sneezing they had. Chen and his clleagues fund that happy peple were less likely t develp a cld. What’s mre, when happy flks did develp a cld, their symptms were less severe than what wuld be expected based n bjective measures. In cntrast, peple with negative characters were nt at increased risk f develping a cld based n bjective measures, thugh they did tend t get dwn abut their symptms.
“We find that it’s really psitive emtins that have the big effect,” Chen said, “nt the negative nes.”
S can a bad-tempered persn fight a cld by deciding t be happy?
      8. What des the underlined phrase “ward ff” in paragraph 3 mean?
      A. Get clse t.B. Keep away frm.C. Get used t.D. G n with.
      9. What was the purpse f Chen’s new study?
      A. T find effective ways t fight illnesses.
      B. T test peple’s immune respnses t flu virus.
      C. T examine the relatin between emtinal style and health.
      D. T tell the differences between happy and unhappy peple.
      10. Hw did Chen reach his cnclusin?
      A. By cmparing the vlunteers’ symptms.
      B. By asking the vlunteers t cmplete a frm.
      C. By cllecting data amng peple with a cld.
      D. By asking the research questins.
      11. What can we cnclude frm the text?
      A. The mre psitive we are, the lnger we live.
      B. Psitive emtins enhances medical effectiveness.
      C. Physical health is as imprtant as mental health.

      D
Glbal warming is mainly caused by the increased emissin f greenhuse gases, in particular carbn dixide prduced by pwer statins that use huge amunts f fssil fuel t supply us with electricity. These greenhuse gases have an average lifetime in the atmsphere f 50 t 200 years. This means that even if we stpped the emissin f greenhuse gases cmpletely tmrrw, glbal warming wuld still cntinue fr decades t cme.
The Internatinal Energy Agency(IEA) recrds the energy cnsumptin wrldwide and prduces a frecast fr the next 25 years. In their last energy utlk published in 2006, IEA predicted a strng increase f the carbn dixide emissins by 2030 as a cnsequence f the increasing demand fr energy wrldwide. Additinally, IEA investigated t which extent the abve mentined emissins f CO₂ culd be prevented if plitics applied strict measures. One f many measures investigated was massive facilitatin and stimulatin fr building additinal nuclear pwer plants (核电站).
Nuclear energy is used t generate electrical pwer withut any srt f fssil fuel invlved in the prcess. Therefre, CO₂ emissin can indeed be reduced, if electricity pwer plants driven by fssil fuels were replaced by nuclear pwer plants. Yet, the applicatin f nuclear pwer is highly risky and prblematic; and s the prblem f CO2 emissins must nt be lked at independently f all ther risks and prblems.
Sme critics claim that nuclear energy’s emissins can cmpare t thse f fssil-fuels’ when the life cycle impacts f nuclear pwer are cnsidered. Althugh nuclear pwer plants d nt release greenhuse gases when generating electricity, certain prcesses used t build and fuel the plants d, such as transprting the fuel t the plants in trucks. Hwever, dzens f studies shw that nuclear plants’ life cycle impacts are actually mre cmparable t thse f renewable energy, such as wind and slar, and far less than thse f cal-fired r natural gas-fired pwer plants.
In the end we can say that nuclear energy culd significantly cntribute t reducing the cause f glbal warming. Having said that, it can als be a highly risky ptin if we shut the eyes t the many risks f nuclear pwer.
      12. What can be inferred abut greenhuse gases frm paragraph 1?
      A. They can be restricted within a shrt time.
      B. They will reduce peple’s average lifetime.
      C. They will keep increasing fr decades t cme.
      D. They have a lasting impact n glbal warming.
      13. What is the purpse f the IEA’s investigatin?
      A. T analyze the impact f glbal warming.
      B. T identify ways t reduce CO₂ emissins.
      C. T predict future energy cnsumptin wrldwide.
      D. T prmte cnstructin f nuclear pwer plants.
      14. What is the authr’s attitude twards nuclear energy?
      A. Tlerant.B. Objective.C. Disapprving.D. Cnservative.
      15. What is the best title fr the text?
      A. Slutins t Dealing with CO₂ Emissins
      B. IEA Energy Outlk fr Decades t Cme
      C. Is Nuclear Energy the Answer t Glbal Warming?
      D. Hw Can Human Beings Survive Glbal Warming?
