Mtivated by Taelr’s resilience (复原力), Lgsdn tk actin. During a campus tur f Old Dminin University (ODU) with her sn, she nticed a prsthetic device in a lab and had an idea. She apprached the university’s engineering students, hping that they culd create a custm device fr Taelr as part f their year-end prject. The students agreed — and even cnnected her with an rganizatin fcused n supprting children with special needs.
Nw, the team f ODU engineering students is wrking t design a persnalized prsthetic slutin. After taking measurements, they’ re building prttypes (原型) that culd significantly imprve Taelr’s quality f life. Their gal is t finish the prject by the end f summer.

The last time my husband and I went ut fr an elegant restaurant dinner, the server came t ur table and began t recite a lng list f specials, with detailed descriptins f hw the dishes were made and where the ingredients had been surced. Her recitatin went n and n, and as she spke, I became almst mre interested in hw she culd remember all thse descriptins than I was in thinking abut the fd. Meanwhile, I culdn’t remember where I’d put my keys befre we left fr the restaurant.
The gd news is that nt remembering where yu put yur keys is generally nt a sign f dementia (老年痴呆). And n the cntrary, being able t remember a lng list f restaurant specials isn’t necessarily a sign f extrardinary mental ability, either. Memry is far mre cmplicated than the dining ut experience culd ever shw. While mst f us are terrified abut develping dementia, fewer than 10% f adults aged 65 and lder will wind up with dementia such as Alzheimer’s (阿尔茨海默症).
“Sme memry lss is nrmal as peple age.” says Jel Salinas, a behaviral neurlgist. “It’s nt the kind f decline that interferes with the ability t live yur life.” And, he adds, “There are areas that actually imprve with age. Vcabulary is ne.”
Jessica Zwerling, a directr f the Center f Excellence fr Alzheimer’s Disease, cmpares the effect f aging n memry t kind f like getting traffic n the brain. “It may take lnger t find a wrd; it may cme t yu later. The speed f prcessing can g dwn, but yur hippcampus, the part f the brain mst assciated with memry, shuld be functining.” And the memries themselves are stred in varius sectins f the cerebral crtex, the uter layer f the brain. “Memry is all these different brain netwrks wrking in cncert with each ther,” says Dr. Salinas.

Alngside the crisps in the snack aisle, supermarkets are nw stacking shelves with rasted chickpeas, cheese bites, and beef jerky. An array f high-prtein alternatives is appearing alngside lw-fat and lw-sugar fds. Dairy sectins are packed with hard-t-prnunce fare such as skyr and kefir. High-prtein diets have becme mainstream.
On scial media, fd and fitness influencers recmmend prtein. Celebrities have made it trendy t lk strng, rather than skinny. A trend is clse t an bsessin. Ggle searches fr “high-prtein diet” reached their highest pint ever in January. Sme 64% f Americans want t increase the amunt f prtein they eat. In Britain, Ocad, an nline supermarket, figures ver 40% f cnsumers have increased their prtein intake ver the past year. S what explains the cnstant appetite?
Gym enthusiasts have been wlfing dwn prtein fr decades. Mre recently the less strng have als realised that prtein can help them build muscle while feeling fuller fr lnger. Juergen Esser at Danne, a French dairy giant, says hunger fr prtein first tk ff amng yungsters wh want t lk muscular. It sn spread t lder peple eager t stay strng and healthy. The pandemic gt peple wrrying abut their health and increased demand.
High-prtein prducts are helping firms expand. Revenues at Danne increased by 4.3% in 2024, driven by high-prtein yghurts and drinks. The questin is whether the trend has gne t far. The Wrld Health Organisatin recmmends 0.83 grams a day per kilgram f bdy weight. By that measure, the average American r Britn cnsumes t much.
Fr fd firms already, struggling t meet multiple requirements, it is yet anther challenge. Cnsumers d nt nly want mre prtein and less/ultra-prcessing, but als mre plant-based fd and anything gd fr the gut (肠道). The Curatrs, a British snackmaker, has a balancing act t perfrm. When the firm began making sya and lentil chips, it settled n ten grams f prtein per bag. Recipes with mre were nt as tasty. And as fd crazes cme and g, a pleasant flavur may be the mst enduring requirement f all.

D. frm Gym t Shelves: A Grwing Appetite fr High-Prtein Diets

Want t write better? There’s a new bk that says simple writing is best
D yu check yur text messages befre sending? ____16____ If nt, yu might prefer getting things dne fast, even if they’re nt perfect.
This bk argues that it’s imprtant t write carefully, even fr quick messages. Tdd Rgers and Jessica Lasky Fink, frm Harvard, wrte “Writing Fr Busy Readers”. It’s smartly named because everyne’s busy tday. Peple get lts f messages every day, frm emails t texts. ____17____ Deciding what t read, skim, r ignre happens many times a day fr almst everyne.
The authrs share gd writing tips, like cutting unnecessary wrds and using simple wrds everyne knws. They say it’s imprtant t keep sentences simple. They tested the idea that less is mre. Fr example, they sent an email t thusands f schl-bard members asking them t take a survey. They made the email shrter, frm 127 t 49 wrds, and gt duble the respnses (frm 2.7% t 4.8%). ____18____
The same is true fr text messages. In anther test, they sent a shrt message asking parents t take a survey. It gt mre respnses than a lnger, mre sympathetic ne. Smetimes, being shrt and clear wrks better than being kind but ignred. It’s nt just what yu say, but hw quickly yu say it that matters.
It’s nt just abut wrd cunt. ____19____ Reducing the number f ptins has the same effect. Shrt, active sentences with cmmn wrds are best.
Frm psts t nline reviews, fllwing these rules gets mre likes and shares. Serius writers shuld pay attentin t. A study fund that cmpanies using lng sentences and cmplicated wrds were seen as less mral and trustwrthy.
____20____ It might be tempting t send messages quickly and hpe fr the best. But taking time t write fr yur readers has benefits. If yu send a rushed message that readers ignre, it’s like yu didn’t send it at all.
A. If everyne is a busy reader, everyne is a busy writer t.
B. They can als get puzzled by scial media platfrms.
C. If yu d, yu prbably like making even the simplest messages perfect.
D. They fund that lnger messages make peple think the task will take lnger.
E. Keeping messages t ne idea, r as few as pssible, helps make sure they’re read, remembered, and acted n.
F. Yur gal is t cnvey enugh passin that yur readers think the issue in yur message is wrth caring abut.
G. Explaining the thinking behind yur messages will allw readers t see that yu knw what yu’re talking abut.

Stepping int the strage rm, his nse wrinkled in disgust. The place was a disaster. Spiderwebs drped frm every crner, and dust swirled in the sunlight like dirty smke.
