Ada Lvelace, brn n December 10th, 1815, was the daughter f the famus pet Gerge Grdn Byrn.
When Lvelace was yung, at her mther’s insistence, tutrs taught her mathematics and science. Wmen f that
time were seldm expsed t such intellectually demanding studies, but her mther believed engaging in these
studies wuld prevent Lvelace frm develping her father’s mdy and unpredictable persnality. Lvelace was
als frced t lie still fr extended perids f time because her mther believed it wuld help her develp
self-cntrl.
Arund the age f 17, Ada met Charles Babbage, a mathematician and inventr. They became friends, and the
much lder Babbage served as a mentr t Lvelace. Thrugh Babbage, Lvelace began studying advanced
mathematics with Prfessr Augustus de Mrgan at the University f Lndn.
Knwn as“the father f the cmputer”, Babbage invented the analytical engine, an early design fr a cmputer.
Lvelace was later asked t translate an article n Babbage’s analytical engine. She nt nly translated the riginal
French text int English but als added her wn thughts and ideas n the machine. Her ntes ended up being three
times lnger than the riginal article. Her wrk was published in 1843 in an English science jurnal.
In her ntes, Lvelace described hw cdes culd be created fr the device t handle letters and symbls alng
with numbers. She als therized a methd fr the engine t repeat a series f instructins, a prcess that cmputer
prgrams use tday. Lvelace als put frward ther frward-thinking ideas in the article. Fr her wrk, Lvelace
is cnsidered t be the first cmputer prgrammer.
Lvelace died n Nvember 27th, 1852, and her cntributins t the field f cmputer science weren’t
discvered until the 1950s. Her ntes were reintrduced t the wrld in 1953. Since then, Ada has received many
hnrs fr her wrk. In 1980, the US named a newly develped cmputer language “Ada”, after Lvelace.
4. What is paragraph 1 mainly abut?

C. Because she intrduced key prgramming cncepts.
D. Because she made cmputer science a discipline.

Rainfrest seedlings are mre likely t survive in natural frests than in places where lgging has happened,
even if tree restratin prjects have taken place, accrding t a new study. Scientists mnitred ver 5,000
seedlings fr a year and a half in Nrth Brne. They studied a regin cntaining bth natural frests and areas
lgged 30 years ag — sme f which were recvering naturally, while the thers had been restred by methds
including tree planting.
At first, bth natural frests and restred frests had similarly high numbers f seedlings, cmpared t
naturally recvering frests, suggesting that restratin activities enhanced the reprductin f trees. Hwever, by
the end f the study, similarly lw numbers f seedlings remained in restred and naturally recvering frests,
while seedling ppulatins were higher in natural frests.
“Our findings suggest that seedlings are experiencing stress in lgged frests,” said Dr. David Barthlmew,
based at the University f Exeter during the study. “This culd be due t changes t the canpy (树冠) structure,
micrclimate, and sil, with current restratin treatments insufficient t remve this stress.”
The study bserved differences in traits f the plants in lgged areas cmpared t natural frests, shwing that
sme species might be struggling t survive in disturbed areas, and that sme had t adjust their grwth t
accmmdate. This culd lead t differences in bidiversity and eclgical functining in the lng term.
Tgether, the results shw that regeneratin may be challenged by different factrs depending n the
restratin apprach. In naturally recvering sites, there might nt be enugh seeds frm nearby trees t spread int
the damaged area, s few seedlings can start grwing. In sites where planted trees have matured, many f the yung
seedlings didn’t survive. S the study highlights the imprtance f carefully designing, mnitring, and adaptively
managing restratin prjects intended t restre degraded landscapes.
8. What is the purpse f the new study?
A. T prve that frest restratin is necessary.
B. T measure the grwth rate f trees in rainfrests.
C. T study seedling survival in different envirnments.
D. T cmpare sil quality in natural and restred frests.
9. What did the researchers find abut the restred frests?
A. Seedlings shwed the fastest grwth in these areas.
B. The number f seedlings increased steadily ver time.
C. They significantly increased the diversity f tree species.
D. They failed t enable the full establishment f seedlings.
10. What des Barthlmew intend t explain in paragraph 3?
A. Why the results ccurred. B. The species mst likely t survive.
C Hw the study was cnducted. D. The methds used t restre frests.
11 What challenges the tree prductin in naturally recvering frests?
A. Sil nutrients. B. Tree mnitring techniques.
C. Seed availability. D. Cmpetitin frm ther species.

Is it pssible t frget yur native language — fr example, if yu mve t anther regin r cuntry and
start speaking a different language?
Research shws that it’s pssible in certain circumstances, particularly fr yung children. The phenmenn is
called “native language attritin (母语磨蚀)”. Fr instance, a 2003 study fund that at age 30, children wh were
brn in Krea but adpted by French families between the ages f 3 and 8 were n better at understanding Krean
than native French speakers wh had never been expsed t the language.
Hwever, the lder a persn is when they mve, the mre likely they are t retain their native language
because they have established a strng linguistic fundatin, accrding t Laura Dminguez, a linguistics prfessr
at the University f Suthamptn. Indeed, recent research suggests that peple are less likely t experience native
language attritin after hitting adlescence (青春期). This is prbably because beynd this stage, ur brains mature
and becme less plastic and receptive t change.
The extent f native language attritin als varies acrss language cmpnents. Dminguez ntes that
vcabulary is the mst vulnerable (易受影响的) aspect f ne’s native language, even after shrt perids f disuse.
Hwever, this des nt imply cmplete frgetting. Rather, it just takes the brain a bit lnger t recall sme wrds.
Once peple fully immerse themselves again in their native language, they’ll get quicker at ding this. By cntrast,
Dminguez and clleagues find that Spanish native speakers wh speak English as a secnd language d nt
change the way they use the present tense in Spanish, which differs frm that in English, even after living in the
UK fr mre than 15 years.
Research als suggests that a similar principle applies t frgetting a secnd language that has nt been used,
depending n the extent and duratin f prir learning. These findings highlight the dynamic nature f language
retentin and recvery.
12. Why is the 2003 study mentined in paragraph 2?
A. T prve that language attritin can be prevented.
B. T prve that peple can frget their mther tngue.
C. T shw that children adapt t new envirnments easily.
D. T shw that a critical perid exists fr language learning.
13. What des paragraph 3 mainly explain?
A. It is easier fr adults t master a new language.
B. Early migratin harms children’s learning ability.
C. Age is a majr factr affecting native language attritin.
D. Native language attritin changes peple’s brain structure.
14. What des the text say abut grammar cmpared t vcabulary?
A. It is mre resistant t being frgtten. B. It takes the brain a lnger time t recver.
C. It can nly be regained thrugh frmal study. D. It is frgtten cmpletely after years f disuse.
15. What is this text abut?
A. Strategies t retain peple’s native language.
B. Hw and why peple lse their mther tngue.
C. Impact f migratin n native language attritin.
D. Hw and why language learning is affected by age.
