In 1736, Benjamin Franklin came acrss a phenmenn while wrking as a clerk fr the Pennsylvania Assembly. A pwerful new member didn’t like Franklin and even threatened t make his life difficult. Franklin culd have bwed t him and tried t win him ver with kind wrds, but he did smething unexpected.
Knwing the man wned a rare and valuable bk, Franklin asked if he culd brrw it fr a few days. The man agreed, and Franklin returned it days later with a plite nte. “When we next met in the Huse, he spke t me, (which he had never dne befre) and did s plitely,” Franklin later recalled. “He that has nce dne yu a kindness will be mre ready t d yu anther, than he whm yu yurself have bliged (恩惠).”
This idea became knwn as the Ben Franklin Effect. In 1969, tw psychlgists, Jn Jecker and David Landy, ran an experiment. They asked 74 vlunteers t take part in a cmpetitin where they culd win mney. After the cmpetitin, the vlunteers were divided int three grups. In the first grup, the lead researcher (wh acted a bit annying) persnally asked each cmpetitr t return the mney t help him ut. In the secnd grup, the ffice assistant asked the cmpetitrs t return the mney, saying the department needed it. The third grup gt t keep their mney. Later, the vlunteers were asked hw much they liked the researcher. Thse in the first grup had a much mre psitive impressin f him than did thse in the third grup. The result f the secnd grup suggested that an indirect request fr a favr des nt endear yu t thers.
But why des this happen? One explanatin is cgnitive dissnance — the discmfrt we feel when we hld tw cnflicting thughts. Fr example, if yu think, “I dn’t like Je, but I’m ding him a favr,” yur brain slves the cnflict by deciding, “Maybe I d like him after all.” Anther explanatin cmes frm the desire t build gd relatinships. Humans are naturally wired t want t help thers.
21. Why did Franklin brrw a bk frm the member?
A. T see its value.B. T imprve relatinship.
C. T learn hw t be plite.D. T test the member’s character.
22. What decided hw much the researcher was liked?
A. The grup number.B. The amunt f mney.
C. The participants’ persnality.D. The direct request fr a favr.
23. What is the secnd explanatin abut?
A. Human nature.B. Netwrk pinins.
C. Scial expectatin.D. Cnflicting situatins.

The catering industry (餐饮业) is witnessing a significant shift twards digital menus, a tendency that is gaining ppularity as mre restaurants adpt technlgy t imprve the dining experience. Digital menus, which can be accessed thrugh QR cdes, tablets, r ther digital interfaces, ffer a mdern and interactive way fr custmers t explre and rder their meals.
Survey data frm Square’s Future f Restaurants 2021 reprt reveals that an verwhelming 88% f restaurants are cnsidering the switch t digital menus. This transitin was mtivated by the need fr cntactless services initially, which have becme increasingly imprtant in light f recent health and safety cncerns. Digital menus ffer advantages such as real-time updates, reduced waste, and the ptential fr data cllectin t make business decisins.
Bruce Bell, head f Square fr Restaurants, wrte in a reprt that “The human-interactin element f dining is never ging t g away, but I think U.S. restaurants will use QR-cde menus in a way that will help them turn mre tables and save csts n the expenses f menu and labr.” This statement reflects a cmmn view amng restaurant wners wh see digital menus as a way t imprve peratinal efficiency.
Despite the grwing tendency twards digital menus, sme restaurants and custmers remain cmmitted t traditinal menus. As regular diner Sarah puts it, “I lve the feeling f a menu in my hands; it sets the tne fr the dining experience. I can take my time and really cnnect with the server. There’s smething abut the persnal tuch that screens simply can’t match.”
The decisin t adpt digital menus r stick with traditinal nes has implicatins fr custmer experience, peratinal efficiency, and envirnmental impact. Digital menus ffer a number f strengths. Hwever, they als require an initial investment in technlgy and may nt be suitable fr all types f restaurants r custmers. Traditinal menus, n the ther hand, ffer a familiar and persnal tuch but can be cstly and less envirnmentally friendly. The chice between digital and traditinal menus is nt just abut keeping up with a trend but abut finding the right balance that is cnsistent with the restaurant’s values and the prgressing expectatins f diners.
24. What drve restaurants t digital menus in the first place?
A. The aim t speed up rdering.B. The desire t imprve menu appeal.

Picture this: yu are in a psitin where yur phne runs ut f battery, but yu dn’t have anywhere t charge it. Well, what if the clthing yu were wearing culd help yu ut? It’s an ptin that isn’t as strange as yu might think. Nw the latest fashin breakthrugh is taking “activewear” in an entirely new directin: researchers at Nttingham Trent University have develped a new fabric that can keep small devices juiced.
The prttype (样品) includes 1,200 tiny slar panels, each measuring just 5 by 1.5 millimeters. It can generate 400 milliwatts (毫瓦特) f electrical energy, enugh t charge electrnic devices.
“Until nw very few peple have cnsidered their clthing prducts culd be used fr charging electrnic devices,” explains Thedre Hughes-Riley, an assciate prfessr f Electrnic Textiles. “The material which we have develped appears and behaves the same as any rdinary fabric, as it can be washed in a machine. Besides, because the tiny slar cells are made up f silicn, wearers aren’t able t even ntice a discrepancy in the fabric’s cmpsitin when it is cmpared t standard clthing.”
Ptential prducts include items like uterwear, backpacks and ther carrying bags using the material, all f which culd allw wearers t keep their devices charged during the day. “Electrnic fabrics really have the ptential t change peple’s relatinship with technlgy, as this prttype shws hw we culd d away with charging many devices n the wall,” adds Thedre.
Slar pwer innvatins are key t transitining (转变) human sciety frm fssil fuel technlgies, and are cming int a variety f fields. The Eurpean Space Agency, fr example, plans t experiment with slar panel systems rbiting abve Earth. Since there are n real “days” r “nights” in space, ptential slar pwer generatin culd be as much as 8 r 9 times greater than what’s currently achievable here n Earth’s surface. As pwerful as that may ne day be fr us, it’s encuraging t knw even changes like the cmpsitin f ur clthing can help facilitate the necessary renewable energy shift fr ur species.
28. What makes the new fabric special?
A. It can prduce electricity frm sunlight.
B. It can change clr in the sun.
C. It is much sfter than standard clthing.
D. It can adjust bdy temperature.
29. What des the underlined wrd “discrepancy” in paragraph 3 mean?
A. Prgress.B. Distinctin.
C. Similarity.D. Mismatch.
30. Hw des the innvatin impact ur relatinship with technlgy accrding t Thedre?
A. By making electrnic devices cheaper and cheaper.
B. By increasing ur dependence n electrnic devices.
C. By making us mre aware f ur energy cnsumptin.
D. By reducing the demand fr fixed charging equipment.
31. What can be inferred frm the last paragraph?
A. Slar energy will sn replace fssil fuels.
B. Slar pwer is mre useful in space than n Earth.
C. Small changes can cntribute t a renewable energy future.
D. Space explratin is necessary fr advancing slar technlgy.

Recent research suggests that grwing camellia (山茶) plants fr cking il culd enhance prductin while minimizing envirnmental harm. Replacing sme traditinal vegetable il crps with camellia culd lead t increased il yield and reductins in greenhuse gas emissins (释放), water cnsumptin, and pesticide use. Camellia, r tea seed il, is a high-yielding bush that grws well in challenging cnditins where ther il crps struggle. Despite its ptential health benefits, camellia il remains largely unknwn utside China.
Currently, abut a third f the wrld’s farmland is used t grw vegetable ils. This area is expanding, cntributing t defrestatin, glbal warming and wildlife lss. Accrding t Thmas Wanger frm Westlake University in Hangzhu, China, the envirnmental impact f six main il crps — sya, palm, rapeseed, sunflwer, peanut, and live — results in an estimated 1.2 gigatnnes f carbn dixide emissins annually, primarily due t fertilizer use and defrestatin.
Wanger’s team explred the envirnmental benefits f replacing sme f these crps with Camellia leifera. This plant can yield up t 2.8 tnnes f il per hectare, secnd nly t palm il, and can grw in pr sil and n steep hillsides. Camellia il is rich in leic acid (油酸), which may lwer heart disease risk and has a higher smke pint than many ils, reducing harmful chemical frmatin during cking.
If camellia were grwn n 11% f the land currently used fr ther il crps, it culd prduce the same il vlume while decreasing greenhuse gas emissins by 14%, water use by 5%, land use by 7%, and pesticide use by 9%. Hwever, these figures wuld depend n hw camellia is grwn, says Wanger, “The benefits depend strngly n where it is planted and t replace what.”
Gvernment actin wuld prbably be needed t encurage a camellia il market, says Wanger. “The price currently is very high, and s I think the cnsumer might be a bit hesitant.” “The cmmercial reality is that new il crps wn’t achieve a large market share unless prductin can cmpete in the market,” says Christpher at Alternative Fuels Cnsultancy.
32. What are the envirnmental benefits f grwing camellia plants?
A. Using less chemicals.
B. Limiting water pllutin.
C. Minimizing greenhuse gas.
D. Helping ther crps’ grwth.
33. What can we learn frm paragraph 3?
A. Camellia plants attain the highest il yield.
B. The living cnditins f camellia is demanding.
C. Camellia il tends t frm less pisnus gas in cking.
D. Camellia il is primarily used fr heart disease treatment.
34. What is Wanger’s attitude tward replacing ther il crps with camellia il?
A. Favrable.B. Objective.C. Unclear.D. Dubtful.
35. What is crucial in increasing the camellia il’s market share?
A. Reducing the price.
B. Expanding the farmland.
C. Encuraging mre prductin.
D. Changing the shpping habits.
