I was eleven years ld when I sptted my elderly neighbr, Julie, wrking in her garden. It was a warm sun-shiny kind f day, and the smell f cut grass made me feel lively. I ppped my head ver the fence, and Julie and I gt talking.
“I’ve seen yu’re very gd with a lawn mwer and gardening tls,” Julie said. “There’s a hedge(树篱) grwing ver the pathway near here. It’s becme s vergrwn. I was planning t cut it back myself. Wuld yu like t help ut?”
I lved the idea f helping her and ur cmmunity. We agreed t cut the hedge the fllwing Sunday. My brther Jsh, aged 8 at the time, als came alng t help us. We wheeled Julie’s garden bin dwn t the hedge, which the cuncil were respnsible fr. All three f us tackled away at it until we reduced it.
We psted phts f ur handiwrk n ur lcal chatting grup. The cmmunity reactin was amazing. One persn, a wheelchair user, was s grateful that they didn’t have t g n the rad anymre t pass the hedge. The likes and cmments multiplied. Sn, mre hands were raised t vlunteer, and small cmmunity-driven prjects began t quietly take rt. Frm planting flwers t pulling trlleys ut f rivers…, vlunteers have kept shwing up t bring new life t ur twn. What used t lk dull and run-dwn nw feels bright and cared fr. Residents ften say hw amazing the flwers lk each spring, brightening up the twn.

We even wn a grant t fund the planting f Queen apple trees in time fr the Platinum Jubilee Celebratin.
As the prjects grew, I created a dedicated website page t keep everyne cnnected. When cmmunity members plan a clean-up, they can cntact us via the website t access any tls and equipment they need t cmplete a prject. The twn’s pride has gne digital, but the spirit behind it remains wnderfully lcal.

Crawling Traffic
Frm an airplane, cars crawling dwn the highway lk like ants. But ants smehw manage t avid the frustrating stp-and-g traffic. Researchers are nw studying these insects’ cperative tactics t learn hw t prgram self-driving cars that dn’t jam up.
The free flw f traffic becmes unstable as the density f cars increases n a highway. At 15 vehicles per mile per lane, ne driver tapping their brakes can trigger a jam. “It’s a kind f phase transitin, like water turning frm a liquid t a slid frm,” says Katsuhir Nishinari, a mathematical physicist at the University f Tky, wh studies jamming transitins.
Nishinari’s previus research had shwn that fraging (觅食) ants can maintain their flw even at high densities. S what’s their secret? In a recent study, researchers recrded ants n fraging trails and used traffic-engineering mdels t analyze their mvement. They fund that the ants dn’t jam because they travel in grups f three t twenty that mve at nearly cnstant rates while keeping gd distances between ne anther — and they dn’t speed up t pass thers.
Human drivers at rush hur hardly fllw such rules. “We’re maximizing the interests f individuals, which is why, at a given pint, yu start t have a traffic jam,” says study c-authr Nicla Pugn. But self-driving cars, if they ne day becme widespread, culd have mre cperative prgramming. In ne visin f this future, autnmus vehicles wuld share infrmatin with nearby cars t ptimize traffic flw by priritizing cnstant speeds r by nt passing thers n the rad.
This vehicle netwrk wuld be analgus t ants n a trail, which use scent t crdinate behavir while interacting with ne anther. “There is n leader, but this rganizatin emerges anyway,” says Pinter-Wllman, a behaviral scientist studying ants at the University f Califrnia. And in bth ant and vehicle traffic, this type f distributed system can be very strng and resilient, Nishinari says.
Still, ants can d a lt f things that cars — even self-driving nes — can’t, Pinter-Wllman pints ut. Ants can frge trails as wide as they like, unlike drivers stuck n highways. The insects d smetimes jam up when cnfined in tunnels, but t keep things mving, “they’ll find a way t walk n the ceiling,” she says. Plus, unlike cars, ants dn’t crash; they can literally walk ver ne anther.
Tday’s drivers can learn at least ne thing frm ants t avid causing a traffic jam, Nishinari says: dn’t tailgate. By leaving rm between their car and the ne ahead f them, drivers can absrb a wave f braking in dense traffic cnditins that wuld therwise translate int a heavy traffic jam. “Just keeping away,” he says, “can help traffic flw smthly.”
28. Ants can avid traffic jams mainly because they ________.
A. have a leader guiding themB. can adjust their trail width
C. keep steady speed and distanceD. use scent fr cmmunicatin
29. What can we learn frm the passage?
A. Technlgy is n match fr the pwer f nature.
B. Being self-centred is the majr cause f traffic jams.
C. Self-driving cars will end traffic jams n the rad sn.
D. A traffic jam will ccur at 15 vehicles per mile per lane.
30. The underlined wrd “analgus” in Paragraph 5 is clsest in meaning t “________”.
A. similar B. superir C. essential D. related
31. What is the passage mainly abut?
A. Hw self-driving cars are managed. B. Why ants cperate better than humans.
C. What ants can teach us abut traffic. D. Where the prblem with traffic lies.
第四部分:书面表达(共两节,27分)
第一节(共4小题;第50、51小题各2分,第52小题3分,第53小题5分,共12分)
阅读下面短文,根据题目要求用英文回答问题。请在答题纸指定区域作答。
As ur wrld cnnects mre clsely with digital life, the age-ld idea f cultural festivals has taken n an exciting new frm. Technlgy is redefining cultural celebratins thrugh the rise f virtual festivals. These digital platfrms nt nly kept cultural expressins alive during hard times like the glbal pandemic but als let mre peple arund the wrld jin, ttally changing hw we feel cnnected thrugh culture.
Gne are the days when yu had t be present in persn t take part in cultural events. Nw, virtual festivals break dwn varius gaps — such as gegraphic distance, ecnmic barriers, r ther limitatins. Anyne with internet can get a “frnt-rw seat”. Frm hme, peple can enjy different cultural things: nline film festivals shwing internatinal mvies, r VR art shws presenting digital masterpieces. These platfrms ffer many creative experiences, all making culture easier t reach and interact with.
Making cultural participatin pen t peple frm all backgrunds is just ne key benefit f this digital shift. Virtual festivals prvide artists with fresh and innvative ways t shw their wrk. They als empwer artists frm less knwn r remte areas t share their unique talents with a glbal audience.
Hwever, the mst precius part f in-persn cultural events — the warm, tangible feeling f sharing special mments with thers face t face — is what virtual experiences still struggle t cpy. By adding interactive features like real-time Q&A sessins and VR grup meetings, they try hard t recreate the lively and energetic atmsphere f live gatherings. But critics argue that they still lack the multi-sensry experience f real festivals: the delicius arma f festival fd, the tactile feel f handcrafted artwrks, and the pwerful resnance (共鸣) f live music filling the air.
Yet virtual experiences have carved ut their wn special space in the cultural wrld, where creativity has n physical bundaries. They hld great prmise t shape the future f cultural events, cnnecting diverse glbal audiences in inclusive and innvative ways and drawing us clser tgether within the cultural flds f ur shared human experience.
32. Hw is technlgy redefining cultural celebratins?
____________________________________________________________________________
33. What are the benefits virtual cultural festivals bring t artists?
____________________________________________________________________________
34. Please decide which part is false in the fllwing statement, then underline it and explain why.
Virtual festivals allw mre peple t take part in cultural events, and they give visitrs the same face-t-face feeling as real nes.
