Ten years ag, a private investigatr appeared at my dr.
“I’m here t investigate the persn wh lives here,” she annunced, then entered my hme and slwly explred. Her eyes swept frm the decratins n the wall t the red Turkish mat n the flr.
She stpped at a glass and yellw cake trlley — a gift frm my mther. On tp sat a manuscript: the handwritten memirs f a ninety-nine-year-ld Wrld War II veteran. His daughter had asked fr my help turning his stries int a literary family legacy.
The investigatr mved t the living rm. A curtain, trimmed with crystal beads, hung frm a French windw. The sunlight made the crystals swing, casting rainbws n the ceiling. “I made it myself,” I said. “I lve the cherry-red fabric.” She ndded and apprached the bkshelf. She ran her finger alng the spines, muthing titles f autbigraphy, then mved t a pink wardrbe filled with family phts, a glbe, and travel suvenirs.
Rm by rm, she made ntes. When she finished, she said, “I’ve gt everything I need. A full prfile n yu.” As I read her analysis, I learned mre abut my preferences, talents, and style — things I hadn’t fully recgnized befre. This prfile became the first step tward designing a life aligned with my unique jys and skills.
In truth, the private investigatr was me. I learned f this self-discvery exercise called The Private-Eye Game. It pened my eyes t my authentic self, guiding me t create a lifestyle that truly reflected my talents and desires.
The exercise is simple: examine yur life frm this detective perspective. In yur hme r wrkspace, lk clsely at yur belngings and nte what they reveal abut yu. Search fr subtle clues that tell yu abut yur interests and talents.
Once yu’ve gathered infrmatin, write a “prtrait f yurself” — a detailed prfile. Reflect n it: Are there surprises? When I did this, I realized my wardrbe chices didn’t reflect my true style. I preferred cmfrt and light clrs ver high heels and reds. I discvered my lve f travel, curisity abut cultures, and talent fr drawing ut peple’s stries. These insights helped me craft a richer, mre fulfilling life.
What might yu uncver? Yur persnal space hlds clues abut yur talents, interests, and desires — things yu may have verlked. With greater clarity, yu can make cnscius chices t live mre authentically, beynd just yur hme.

Why d we get angry, fearful, jyful, r anxius? What’s the pint in having emtins? In many instances in life we wish we culd d away with emtins altgether, particularly the unpleasant nes like fear, anxiety, and anger. Remaining calm and peaceful ften feels preferable t experiencing extreme ups and dwns.
But what if we regard emtins as key t decisin making — and start t see that withut them we wuld start t make sme truly unwise chices? Emtins then becme mre than childlike yelps (jy) and screams (anger); instead, they are bdily prcesses that signal value, influence risk assessment, and speed up judgements in uncertain situatins.
Neurscientist Antni Damasi develped the “smatic marker hypthesis” in respnse t bservatins made in neurlgical patients wh had suffered damage t the brain’s frntal lbe. Befre the nset f brain damage, the patients were intelligent, creative, and successful— but after damage the patients struggled t rganise their wrkday, had prblems planning their future ver immediate, medium and lng-range gals, and culd n lnger chse suitable friends, partners, and activities. The plans they rganised, the grups they elected t jin, r the activities they undertk ften led t financial lsses, lsses in scial standing, and lsses t family and friends, Damasi writes in his paper, The Smatic marker Hypthesis and the Pssible Functins f the Prefrntal Crtex. Nt nly were the chices made by patients n lnger persnally advantageus, but they were als demnstrably different frm the chices the patients were knwn t have made prir t brain damage. But in all ther aspects f intellect— basic attentin and wrking memry, the ability t use lgic in the slutin f prblems, the learning f factual knwledge and skills, even their knwledge f scial issues — the patients were therwise perfectly fine.
Interestingly, in cnjunctin with impaired decisin making, patients als suffered a cmprmised ability t express emtin and t experience feelings. “Alng with nrmal intellect and abnrmal decisin making, there were abnrmalities in emtin and feeling,” writes Damasi.
When we feel jy, rage, disgust — the entire bdy’s internal envirnment, including muscles, rgans, fluids, and physilgical states including bld pressure and temperature, shift in respnse, and this “smatic” respnse is what drives decisin making. We meet smene wh gives us a “bad taste in the muth” and we dn’t invite them arund fr dinner. Withut emtin and the accmpanying smatic markers — a punding heart rate, tight face, lump in the thrat, dry muth, butterflies in the stmach, sweaty hands, and s frth — we wuld, mre ften than nt, accrding t Damasi’s hypthesis, make sub-ptimal decisins in ur everyday life.
28. What did Damasi find abut patients with frntal lbe damage?
A. Failure t learn sme scial skills.B. Decline in their wrking memry.
C. Inability t express their emtins.D. Difficulty in making wise decisins.
29. What des the wrd “smatic” underlined in Para.3 mst pssibly mean?
A. Intellectual.B. Emtinal.
C. Bdily.D. Lgical.
30. Which wuld be the best title fr the passage?
A. Feeling Our WayB. Head Ruling Heart
C. Trusting the SensesD. Calm Befre Strm

What are yu ding later: wandering thrugh Van Ggh’s landscapes, time-travelling t ancient Egypt? These are the kinds f “immersive” experiences we are increasingly flded with. The immersive entertainment market glbally was valued at arund $114 billin in 2024, and it is predicted t almst quadruple t rughly $442 billin by 2030.
As a jurnalist and life-lng pp culture fan, I am simultaneusly fascinated and unsettled by immersive entertainment. My mst memrable experiences f it were persnalised and pwerfully emtive, making me exhilarated, tearful, even “cybersick”. When we are wrapped up in a narrative, particularly ne relayed thrugh a headset, we are remved frm real time.
It isn’t the escapism that wrries me, thugh — great culture frees us frm everyday cnstraints — it is the insularity (孤立). Immersive events stress the subjective viewpint, ften at the expense f the cmmunal energy that fuels scial atmsphere, s even packed-ut immersive shws can seem like slitary pursuits, with human cmpanins resembling NPCs (nn-playable vide game characters).
The cultural academic Keren Zaintz cined a sharp term fr ur cnsumptin f immersive entertainment: “narcissistic spectatrship”. One study fund VR use induced dissciative symptms in 83.9 percent f participants. The lng-term effects remain undefined, but research has highlighted recurring themes f addictin t the experience and islatin.
Over at Lndn’s Barbican Centre, Feel the Sund is a new immersive exhibitin whse installatins ffer imaginative persnalised features, including Yur Inner Symphny’s “sensing statins”, which generate unique visuals by tracking ur bdily reactins t music. Luke Kemp, wh heads up the Barbican’s immersive prgramming, says these experiences respnd t ur need fr “playful” cultural spaces, accessible regardless f prir knwledge: “It allws the audience t feel part f smething”.
Rbyn Landau at Kinda Studis, c-develper f Yur Inner Symphny, pints ut the link t interceptin — ur awareness f ur bdy’s inner senses. “When we have these transfrmative experiences individually that cnnect us t urselves, they actually transfrm hw we shw up in the wrld and the way we cnnect t thers,” she says.
Accrding t psychlgist Sphie Janicke-Bwles, immersive experiences “can have an incredible recvery effect n ur mind, where we can detach frm ur everyday cncerns and cgnitively, emtinally and even physilgically get absrbed int smething different”.
But fr me, there is still a curius tensin at play in immersive entertainment, and I am trn abut where the rapidly develping scene is taking us. It des give us an pprtunity t tune int urselves, but I am less cnvinced it amplifies ur bnd with thse arund us. If we remain fixated by ur wn reflectins, then we are missing the bigger picture. Immersive entertainment might make VIPs f us all, but culture shuld als bring us tgether.

A. They free the authr frm restrictins.
B. They lift the authr ut f an awful md.
C. They leave the authr feeling alne in the crwd.

32. What can be inferred abut Luke Kemp’s view n immersive experiences?
A. They make peple feel included.B. They lead t self-fcused perspectives.
C. They help with mental wellness.D. They transfrm ur scial interactins.
33. The authr mentins Yur Inner Symphny mainly t ________.
A. restate an argumentB. prpse a cncept
C. prvide an exampleD. present an pinin
34. The authr cnsiders Sphie Janicke-Bwles’s view ________.
