As I lk up at the hundreds f firewrks in the sky, I hear the bells ringing in small temple welcming the cming f the Chinese New Year. Thugh I may nt believe in r understand many f the New Year traditins here, the similarities between the cming f this New Year and the beginning f my new life in China are nt lst n a big by like me.
My fist few days in China were a cultural shck t say the least. Having arrived late in the semester, I immediately had t begin my beginners’ Chinese classes, alng with the newest class f verseas students. The first time I called a taxi by myself, the driver actually understd where I wanted t g, which is hugely rewarding (有益的). Sill it is never lng befre my lack f language skill is expsed (暴露的) and I cme crashing back t earth, usually immediately upn leaving the taxi.
Gaining a language is a huge valuable skill. Hwever, it is nt the nly thing I will gain in China. After this year f learning Chinese, I aim t gain my master’s degree here at University f Jinan.
