With artificial intelligence (AI) prgrams that can nw generate entire sngs n demand, yu’d be frgiven fr thinking AI might eventually lead t the decline f human-made music. As a cmpser and music educatr, I happened t start wrking with the technlgy.
Music AI can be used in sund analysis, nise remval and mixing. Sun, Beethven and Udi are sme f the cmpanies currently leading in the AI music field. In many cases, the utputs dn’t have t be excellent; they just need t be gd enugh t cmpete with real musicians. The music industry is understandably cncerned. In April 2024, ver 200 artists signed an pen letter urging AI develpers t stp training mdels with ed (有版权的) material.
In 2023, I was invited t create a new wrk with Sydneybased design cmpany Kpi Su, and develp a new music AI tl. Wuld this be a huge waste f time, r end with my data added t sme mysterius AI data pl? Or wuld it pen up new creative directins fr me? Nevertheless, I finally accepted it.
The new tl, called Kup Music, was based n a text-t-image mdel. Fr example, I culd uplad a shrt vcal meldy (声乐旋律) and ask the AI t turn it int an insect sund r a“hip hp” style. Thugh samples were limited t 5-10 secnds, they led t unexpected ideas. Sme samples were rather pleasing. Others were bring. Sme came ut with unpleasant tnes. The imperfectin gave me permissin t have fun. I fcused n generating separate musical elements with my text instructins, rather than fully arranged samples.
The prcess felt like cperatin-like I was making music with a “kky clleague”. This tk away the pressure t make “perfect” music, and instead allwed me t fcus n new creative pssibilities.
The key t a meaningful relatinship with music AI is t wrk alngside it-nt let it d all the wrk. Under the right circumstances, it can prvide the tls t prduce smething truly creative. Making “imperfect” art that takes time is the price f being human. And I’m grateful fr that.
24. Why was the pen letter signed in 2024?
A. T seek financial supprt frm AI cmpanies.
B. T encurage musicians t cperate with AI.
C. T prmte the develpment f AI music tls.
D. T prtest the use f ed wrks in AI training.
25. What is the authr’s initial attitude twards the wrk invitatin?
A. Curius and eager.B. Excited and cnfident.
C. Dubtful and hesitant.D. Indifferent and uninterested.
26. What can the new AI tl ffer t the authr?
A. Musical elements with varied quality.B. Cmplete sngs with sweet meldies.
C. Prfessinal nise remval slutins.D. Perfectly arranged musical samples.
27. Which f the fllwing might the authr agree with?
A. Musicians rely t much n AI tls.B. AI shuld be used as a cperative tl.
C. AI music is a threat t human musicians.D. The music industry verestimates AI risks.

Fr all the fears arund teens and screens, the mst square-eyed generatin is the elderly. Older peple have lng been champin TV-viewers. Nw a new generatin f pensiners (领养老金的人) are adding t their screen time with smartphnes and iPads, which take up mre than half f their waking hurs.
The digitizatin f ld age is a gd thing. Facebk and WhatsApp bring daily updates frm ld friends and faraway grandchildren. Zm transprts church, bk clubs and dctrs’ appintments int the hme fr peple wh cannt attend persnally. E-cmmerce remves physical shpping burdens. Hurs f entertainment frm any era are available n demand. A cnnected retirement is mre fulfilling and fun than an ffline ne.
Older peple are prtected frm sme f the n-screen risks that threaten teenagers. Having established their key real-life relatinships, they are less in danger f the scial develpment challenges that affect yuth. Their wrldviews, already frmed, prve mre resistant t nline temptatin. Furthermre, their extensive free time means swapping ne leisure pursuit fr anther — unlike fr students facing academic pressures.
Hwever, as retirement mves nline there will be csts that sciety must cnsider. Older flks' devices, unlike thse f teenagers, are usually cnnected t credit cards. Dr-t-dr cheats, wh have lng preyed (欺骗) n the elderly, can nw g iPad-t-iPad. The authrities rightly strive t prtect children frm nline predatrs. They must recgnize that there is anther, fast-grwing disadvantaged grup t lk after. Additinally, as heavy cnsumers f digital news, lder adults tend t fall fr misinfrmatin — a prblem made wrse by advancing AI technlgy. Since senirs are the mst cnsistent vting grup, their ptential miseducatin wuld negatively affect electins.
The scial impact remains cmplex. While digital cnnectivity reduces feelings f lneliness, it may als reduce physical scial interactin. Unlike children whse screen time is regulated by adults, senirs generally lack guidance frm thers in dealing with these prs and cns. Next time children are urged t put dwn the phnes, they might glance tward their grandparents — equally bsessed with their wn screens — suggesting that digital respnsibility knws n age limit.
28. Why is digital life beneficial t the elderly?
A. It is a replacement fr their ffline life.B. It reduces their need fr entertainment.
C. It gives access t prfessinal training.D. It ffers scial cntact and cnvenience.
29. Why are elderly users mre resistant t sme digital risks?
A. They receive family guidance.B. They have sund life fundatins.
C. They use simpler digital devices.D. They pssess strnger technical skills.
30. What can be inferred frm paragraph 4?
A. Teenagers are better at identifying nline cheating.
B. AI technlgy is a primary driver f misinfrmatin.
C. Gvernments shuld expand nline prtectin effrts.
D. Senirs hld a casual attitude twards plitical affairs.
31. Which describes the authr’s attitude t the digitizatin f senirs?
A. Skeptical.B. Cncerned.C. Pessimistic.D. Favrable.
D
A dg acting aggressively (攻击性地) at the park and a student dealing with lw md while ding well in schl may seem unrelated, but new research says they culd share similar genetic rts. Scientists studied ver 1,000 glden retrievers, a kind f dg, and fund that many genes influencing dg behavir als shape human persnality, intelligence, and emtinal health. Published in a leading science jurnal, this finding challenges simple ideas abut what drives behavir in bth species.
Glden retrievers that did well in training had special versins f genes called ROMO1 and ADGRL2. In humans, ROMO1 is linked t intelligence and hw well peple learn and think, while ADGRL2 is linked t emtinal sensitivity and getting annyed easily. This means trainable dgs might be smarter and mre emtinally aware, nt just mre willing t fllw rders. This matters fr prgrams that train service dgs. Many rely heavily n fd rewards t shape behavir. But if trainability is really abut prblem-slving ability, prgrams might be better ff selecting dgs based n cgnitive (认知)tests rather than just hw eagerly they g after treats.
The strngest genetic similarities were in fear-related behavirs. Dgs afraid f lud nises, strangers, r ther dgs had variants (变体)in genes like ACC3 and PRDX1. In humans, these genes are tied t anxiety, depressin, and md changes. This shws a dg hiding during a thunderstrm might feel smething clse t human anxiety. Owners f such dgs may need mre than just training — changing their envirnment t reduce stress r even medicatin in serius cases culd help.
Of curse, genes dn’t determine everything. Training, early life experiences, and envirnment still play big rles. The research relied n wner-reprted questinnaires rather than direct bservatin f dg behavir, which intrduces subjectivity in hw wners perceive their pets. Envirnmental factrs like training methds, husehld dynamics, and life experiences varied widely and culd influence behavir. The study included nly glden retrievers aged 3 t 7 years, s results may nt apply t ther dgs.
32. What did scientists find abut dgs and humans?
A. They shape their actins by training.B. Their rigins in intelligence are identical.
C. They dn’t have the same emtinal genes.D. Their behavirs have similar genetic rts.
33. What characteristics d trainable dgs have?
A. They lack fear in training.B. They are desperate fr treats.
C. They have sharp emtinal perceptin.D. They are unwilling t fllw rders.
34. Hw shuld wners treat their fearful dgs?
A. Punish their fearful behavirs.B. Increase their treat rewards.
C. Adjust their living envirnment.D. Fcus mainly n training.
35. What is the last paragraph mainly abut?
A. Majr limitatins f the study.B. Suggestins fr studies n humans.
C. Explanatins f the research methd.D. Pssible reasns fr the study findings.

When I shw peple this image and ask what they see, they mstly say a questin mark with tw perids. They ften add that the tw perids represent yur past and future, and the questin mark is tday. They wuldn’t be wrng. As a sciety, we are either fcused n nt repeating the past mistakes r what we’ll d in the future. We make lists, track what we read, study, watch, r listen t, and think a lt n injustices that demand equality. 36
What if I tell yu that there’s mre white space than actual markings in the image? White space — als called negative space — exists in design as the unprinted area that is purpseful. 37 Jcelyn K. Glei describes it as balancing the page by letting elements breathe, enhancing fcus.
38 Glei suggests applying white space t daily schedules t fster innvatin and imaginatin. Other writings describe it as cultivating the mental capacity t play, explre, learn, and rest withut guilt r distractin. By shifting fcus t the white space, we invite creativity and transcend the rdinary, helping us becme wh we’re meant t be.
Simply put, wherever yu have gals and dreams, this is where yu need white space in yur life. 39 Rather than being cntinually active, rushing frm ne activity t the next, set aside time t just hld hands. D yu want t be mre creative and prductive when yu are trying t build a business r create incme thrugh writing? Then schedule white space int yur calendar t nurture creativity. White space isn’t laziness; it’s intentinal time fr wisdm t flw.
S, hw can we intrduce this cncept int ur daily rutines? Yu can create white space by intentinally setting electrnics aside and walking away frm yur smartphne. 40 Just like a webpage’s white space draws the eye, a life with scheduled white space draws in pssibility.
A. But here is where we get ur fcus all wrng.
B. It supprts visual integrity and draws attentin.
C. But ur fcus tends t skip the present mment.
D. It creates an envirnment that fuels innvatin and imaginatin.
E. White space als cmes frm taking a walk r gazing at the breeze.
F. D yu desire a deeper relatinship with the special ne in yur life?
G. If white space wrks s well in design, culd it als imprve ur lives?
