Rainwater in cities causes mre trubles than wet feet. It carries away waste frm rftps and streets as it washes thrugh cities. Eurpean scientists are nw trying t wrk ut hw t deal with flding rainwater.
In the city f Wetteren, Belgium, researchers are experimenting with seashells. Millins f shells frm the nearby Nrth Sea are used t cllect and treat rainwater frm a shpping-mall rf and a parking lt. The shells are laid belw a surface drain (下水道) thrugh which dirty water is carried away. With a 70% empty space that allws them t stre rainwater, they’re als a natural cleaning statin, which is then used t water cmmunity gardens.
The experiment is part f a prject called StpUP whse gal is t prevent rainwater frm carrying pllutants int lakes and rivers. The prject’s fcus is t make sure that such wastewater, which can include everything frm plastics t heavy metals, gets treated.
Thmas Jeffery, head f the Cllege f Envirnmental Engineering in Germany, said a big knwledge gap can exist between the ppular perceptin f rainwater and its true cntent. “Rainwater seems t be very clean, but when it washes the streets and rfs, it becmes full f dust and ther harmful pllutants,” said Thmas.
In Eurpe, 38% f surface waterbdies have different frms f pllutants, which run deep in the grund and damage sils, plants and animals, accrding t Julie Rsalie, directr f the Eurpean Envirnment Agency. Have yu ever heard f the classic Marshmallw (棉花糖) Test? It’s a fun experiment where kids are given a marshmallw and tld that they can eat it nw r wait a bit and get tw marshmallws later. Sme kids eat the marshmallw right away, while thers struggle t wait fr the tw marshmallws.

But a new study in 2022 by scientists raised an interesting questin: is this behavir really abut self-cntrl, r is it abut the culture we grw up in? In the United States, peple usually dn’t wait fr everyne t be served befre they start eating. In Japan, hwever, there is a traditin f waiting until everyne is served. This cultural difference led researchers t wnder if Japanese kids wuld wait lnger in the marshmallw test cmpared t American kids. Surprisingly, the study fund that Japanese kids did wait lnger — abut 15 minutes n average, while American kids waited fr abut 5 minutes.
Then the researchers did anther fllw-up experiment. They lked at a different situatin: pening gifts. In the United States, gifts are ften saved fr special events like birthdays and Christmas, when kids have t wait t pen their gifts. In Japan, gifts are given mre ften, and kids usually pen them right away. This is a pwerful result because it shws the imprtance f culture and habit in shaping the way hw children act.
