A Nrthwestern University-led team f researchers has develped a new fuel cell that
harvests energy frm micrbes (微生物) living in dirt. Abut the size f a standard paperback
bk, the sil-pwered technlgy culd fuel undergrund sensrs used in mdern agriculture and green infrastructure. This culd ptentially ffer a sustainable, renewable alternative t batteries
that release harmful chemicals int the grund.
T test the new fuel cell, the researchers used it t pwer sensrs measuring sil cnditin and detecting tuch, a capability that culd be valuable fr tracking passing animals. T enable
wireless cmmunicatins, the researchers als equipped the sil-pwered sensr with a tiny
antenna t transmit (传输) data t a neighbring base statin by reflecting existing radi frequency signals. Nt nly did the fuel cell wrk in bth wet and dry cnditins, but its pwer als utlasted similar technlgies by 120%.
The research was published n Jan. 12 in the Prceedings f the ACM n Interactive, Mbile, Wearable and Ubiquitus Technlgies.
“The number f electrnic devices used in mdern agriculture as a way t imprve crp
prductins is cnstantly grwing,” said Nrthwestern’s Bill Yen, wh led the wrk. “If we
imagine a future with numerus devices like these, we cannt build every ne f them ut f
lithium (锂) and heavy metals that are dangerus t the envirnment. We need t find alternatives that can prvide lw amunts f energy t pwer a widespread netwrk f devices.”
In a search fr slutins, the researchers turned t sil micrbial fuel cells(MFC), which use special micrbes t break dwn sil and generate a lw amunt f energy t pwer sensrs. As
lng as there is rganic carbn in the sil fr the micrbes t break dwn, the fuel cell can ptentially last frever.
“These micrbes are cmmn; they already live in sil everywhere,” said Nrthwestern’s
Gerge Wells, a senir authr f the study. “We can use very simple engineered systems t cllect their electricity. We’re nt ging t pwer entire cities with this energy, but we can cllect tiny
amunts f energy t fuel practical, lw-pwer applicatins.”
The researchers plan t develp a sil-based MFC made frm fully bidegradable (生物可降解的) materials as their next step.
24 .What can we knw frm the new fuel cell?
A .It was nt limited by sil cnditins.
B .The pwer it prduced increased by 20%.
C .It was made frm fully bidegradable materials.
D .It will cmpletely replace cnventinal batteries sn.
25 .What can we infer frm Bill Yen’s wrds in paragraph 4?
A .Electrnic devices are widely used in industries.

A new crss-disciplinary field termed “csmic (宇宙的) heritage studies” has been
prpsed by an internatinal team f archaelgists and space physicists. This discipline fcuses n identifying, dcumenting and preserving histrical bjects frm humanity’s ventures int
space, treating them as valuable cultural heritage rather than mere space junk.
“The bjects we’ve left in space and n ther planets and mns tell the stry f human
technlgical achievement and explratin spirit,” said Dr. Maria Chen, lead researcher frm the Eurpean Space Heritage Fundatin. “With increasing cmmercial space activities, these
artifacts face never-befre-seen risks f damage r destructin if nt prperly prtected.”
The cncept builds upn traditinal archaelgical principles but adapts them t the unique cnditins f space envirnment. Unlike Earth-based archaelgy that deals with centuries-ld
artifacts, csmic heritage must cnsider factrs like radiatin expsure, lw-gravity effects, and rbital decay (衰减) that affect preservatin.
A central challenge fr csmic heritage researchers invlves establishing criteria fr what is cnsidered as significant space heritage. “While bviusly histrically imprtant items like the
first satellite Sputnik r Apll landing sites deserve prtectin, we als need t cnsider mre recent bjects that represent technlgical milestnes,” Dr. Chen explained. The internatinal cmmunity currently debates whether t preserve all human-made bjects in space r nly
selected histrically significant nes.
The team recmmends establishing an internatinal recrd-keeping system fr space
artifacts and develping lw-impact dcumentatin methds using remte sensing technlgy.
“We’re nt suggesting we bring everything back t museums,” Dr. Chen clarified. “In many cases, digital preservatin thrugh high-reslutin imaging and 3D mdeling may be the mst practical
apprach.”
As space becmes increasingly accessible, csmic heritage studies aim t ensure that future
generatins can understand and appreciate the material evidence f humanity’s first steps beynd Earth. The researchers hpe their wrk will infrm internatinal space plicy and prmte
respnsible management f ff-Earth cultural resurces.
28 .Why des Dr. Chen advcate fr treating space bjects as heritage?
A .Fr their cmmercial value. B .Fr their histrical stries.
C .Fr their rescue urgency. D .Fr their display ptential.
29 .Hw des Dr. Chen view the current prtectin situatin?
A .Urgent due t cmmercial grwth. B .Challenging due t harsh space cnditins.
C .Cmplex due t unclear wnership. D .Manageable with current laws.
30 .What is the key challenge mentined in paragraph 4?
A .Agreeing n preservatin technlgy. B .Setting internatinal prtectin rules.
C .Finding lng-term cnservatin funds. D .Deciding which bjects t prtect.
31 .What is the principle behind Dr. Chen’s recmmended preservatin methd?
A .Bringing items back t Earth. B .Building bases at sites.
C .Using remte, lw-impact tech. D .Making strict space laws.

When smene lses weight, peple ntice, cmment, and ask hw. The questin implies that whatever methd they used is wrth knwing, reprducing, r admiring. It psitins weight lss as an achievement, a mral victry, a signal f discipline r virtue. But what if their weight lss came frm grief, stress, depressin r a medicatin that finally brught balance t their bdy chemistry?
Our curisity abut hw smene lst weight is rarely neutral. Often, it’s rted in ur wn insecurity r desire fr cntrl. We want t knw what wrks — because culturally, we’ve been
taught that managing ur bdies is a lifelng prject. When we see smene “succeed,” we want the recipe. Hwever, rather than self- imprvement prjects, ur bdies are cmplex ecsystems — shaped by genetics, hrmnes, health cnditins, sciecnmic factrs, medicatins, and
emtins. When we reduce smene’s bdy t a befre- and- after stry, we dehumanize them int an bject lessn.
The recent explsin f GLP-1 medicatins like Ozempic, Wegvy, and Munjar has
made this questin even mre cntrversial. Many peple assume any visible change must be
drug- related, and they ask with hardly disguised judgment r envy. “Did yu use ne f thse
medicatins?” has becme the new “Did yu get wrk dne?” The subtext is clear: Did yu earn this, r did yu cheat?
This framing is nt nly prejudiced — it’s unscientific. GLP-1 medicatins are legal
medical treatments fr cnditins like diabetes (糖尿病), metablic dysfunctin, and besity.
Shame has n place in a cnversatin abut health r healing. Yet we’ve mralized weight lss t such an extent that even thse wh find life-changing relief thrugh medicatin are made t feel guilty r defensive fr it.
We live in a sciety enthusiastic abut Cinderella stries. Weight lss is still treated like a transfrmatin myth. But health and self-wrth are nt determined by bdy size, and
accmplishments shuldn’t be measured in punds. When we cease lking int hw peple lst weight, we start t und a small but pwerful part f that narrative. We give thers and urselves permissin t exist withut explanatin, justificatin, r public cmmentary n ur bdies.
32 .Why d peple ask abut weight lss methds?
A .T manage their desire fr cntrl.
B .T address their wn bdy image anxiety.
C .T identify effects f weight medicatins.
D .T study human bdy ecsystems clsely.
33 .What des the underlined wrd “framing” in paragraph 4 prbably mean?
A .Aviding cntrversial questins.
B .Building supprt structures.
C .Labelling medicatin as cheating.
D .Misjudging health cnditins.
34 .Which statement wuld the authr prbably agree with?
A .Weight lss signals discipline and virtue.
B .Medicatins are universal health slutins.
C .Dieters shuld defend their wn rights.
D .Self-wrth is independent f bdy size.
35 .What can be the best title fr the text?
A .Celebrating Bdy Changes
B .Psychlgy f Lsing Weight
C .Stp Judging Weight Lss
D .Medical Slutins t Overweight

chrnic scial jetlag face an increased risk f varius health prblems, including metablic issues and high stress levels.
____39____ T minimize the effects, experts suggest that peple spend mre time utdrs during the day, expsing themselves t natural light, which can help regulate their sleep cycles. In an ideal wrld, ur schedules wuld be based n ur chrntype, allwing us t wrk when we’re naturally at ur best. Until then, it’s essential t be mindful f hw early wake-ups and late nights affect ur well-being. ____40____
A .It’s the result f waking up earlier than yur bdy r staying up t late.

But health and self-wrth are nt determined by
bdy size, and accmplishments shuldn’t be measured in punds.
