Jasn Haney is a cnstructin wrker frm Indiana. When he began his current jb as freman n a site
ppsite a children’s hspital, this awesme dad and hbby artist had a brilliant idea.
Haney nticed that many f the sick kids at the Memrial Children’s Hspital in Suth Bend culd nt g
utside, and his cnstructin site was the nly view frm their hspital rms. S tgether with his teenage
daughter, Haney built a 2.5 meter tall plywd (胶合板) cutut f Wald frm the famus Where’s Wald? bks.
Every day, the wrkers hide Wald in a different spt n the cnstructin site, giving the children a new
challenge. As sn as Haney finds ut that the kids have fund Wald, the cutut gets mved t a new secret hiding
spt and the game begins again.
Heidi Presctt, a spkeswman fr Beacn Health System, which runs the hspital, said the prject began ne
winter when the wrkers put up an inflatable (可充气的) snwman fr the children. The kids lved the idea and
frm there it quickly develped int the Wald cutut.
“It didn’t take lng t catch n, the kids whether they are in the rms r in a play area, they lk acrss as
sn as they get t the windw,” Presctt tld ABC News. “They will lk all ver the building, pint and exclaim
      (惊叫) ‘I fund him!’”
Haney, meanwhile, simply enjys knwing that he can brighten the children’s day and make them frget that
they are in hspital fr a few minutes. He has said ver and ver again, “All I did this fr was t make the kids
      smile.”
Haney even created a Facebk grup where he leaves clues as t where Wald might be hiding and the
children can pst phts f their findings. The prject has been a huge success, with hundreds f peple sharing
phts f Wald and happy parents thanking Haney fr making an therwise difficult visit t the hspital just that
      little bit mre enjyable.
      4. Why did Jasn Haney create the Wald cutut?
      A. T bring jy t sick kids in a nearby hspital.

Scientists at MIT have managed t change rdinary spinach (菠菜) plants int natural sensrs which can find
chemicals used in bmbs. The secret t giving spinach these special pwers is nantech (纳米技术), which is a
scientific area that deals with making r changing things that are extremely tiny.
“Ordinary spinach plants can be fund everywhere and easy t stre; like ther plants, they nrmally take in
carbn dixide gas,” the scientists say. “But actually they can sense small changes f sil and water ptential and
respnd t them. If we tap int this pint, there is a wealth f infrmatin t access.” That’s what the scientists use
      t pwer their tiny experiments.
Fr this experiment, the scientists placed tw different kinds f tiny nan-materials int spinach plants. T
embed (植入) them int the plants, the scientists put a liquid cntaining them n the bttm f the plant’s leaves.
As part f its natural prcess, the spinach plant pulls water thrugh its rts and int its leaves. If the water cntains
certain chemicals used in bmbs, the tiny sensrs in the leaves make the nan-tubes, which, alng with the sensrs,
were placed int the spinach plant befre by the scientists, prduce a slightly special kind f light. By watching the
plant cnstantly using a camera attached t a cmputer, the scientists set up a system that can send a warning email
      第 5页/共 11页
if chemicals frm explsives are fund in the water.
The cmputer the scientists used is abut the size f a playing card. They say that in the future, their system
culd even use a cell phne with its camera changed slightly. Discvering chemicals used in bmbs is just ne f
the many uses the researchers are explring. They have used such plants t discver several ther dangerus
chemicals as well. Frm their pint f view, there’s n dubt that in the future, such systems culd give farmers
specific infrmatin abut the health f the land and water n their farms.
      8. Why d the scientists use spinach plants t d the experiment?
      A. They are cmmn in the daily life. B. They are envirnmentally respnsive.
      C. They are small in size and easy t stre. D. They are efficient at absrbing carbn dixide.
      9. What’s the functin f the nan-tubes placed int spinach plants?
      A. Fixing the tiny sensrs. B. Cntaining the liquid.
      C. Cntrlling the camera. D. Giving ff plant light.
      10. What can yu infer abut the system frm the last paragraph?
      A. Researchers are cnfident in its agricultural ptential.
      B. Future success depends n specialized phne cameras.
      C. Farmers have received farm-specific envirnmental data.
      D. The cmputer can be sized accrding t scientists’ needs.
      11. What is a suitable title fr the text?
      A. Nantech Helps Spinach Grw Healthily B. Nantech Prtects Spinach frm Danger
      C. Spinach Delivers Warnings via Nantech D. Spinach Is Sensitive t Chemicals in Bmbs
      D
A challenge f teaching mathematics rather than, say, histry is that the hmewrk is a lt harder t cme up
with. After all, “Was Henry Ⅷ a gd king?” is a reasnable questin t ask either a classrm f nine-year-lds r
a lecture theatre f pstgraduates. But “Slve this quadratic equatin (二次方程式)” wuld leave the classrm
nnplussed and the lecture theatre unimpressed. Maths is learned by ding and designing a prblem that is easy
enugh t be apprachable, yet hard enugh t be satisfying, is a big headache in itself.
Partly fr this reasn, bks that successfully cmmunicate hw mathematicians think, but are aimed at thse
nt already in the field, are bth valuable and rare. Nw Sir David Spiegelhalter, prfessr f statistics at the
University f Cambridge, has added t the categry with The Art f Uncertainty. His new bk will attract many
mre than just mathematicians, fr its tpic is universal: hw t analyse chance, uncertainty and risk.
      第 6页/共 11页
If a new virus is running wild and the majrity f deaths are amng thse wh have received a newer vaccine
(疫苗), is that evidence that the vaccinatin prgram is harmful? Hw much f tp ftball teams’ perfrmance
cmes dwn t luck rather than skill? Prfessr Spiegelhalter’s explratin f such questins is delightful. First, he
uses them t illustrate brader ideas abut hw prbability and statistics wrk. S a discussin f vaccine safety
prceeds t Bayes’s therem, a prcedure fr imprving ne’s judgment f prbabilities as new evidence cmes t
light. The jy f Prfessr Spiegelhalter’s apprach is that he reaches this deep truth thrugh nthing mre than
sme intuitive (直觉的) assumptins and very simple maths.
Mst imprtant, thugh, is Prfessr Spiegelhalter’s skill at cmmunicating these ideas. Much f prbability
and statistics can g against ur intuitin, and the maths behind it is ften fearsme. But this is nt a difficult bk
      t read r understand.
      12. What des the underlined wrd “nnplussed” in paragraph 1 prbably mean?
      A. Misguided. B. Amused. C. Cnfused. D. prepared.
      13. What is the biggest selling pint f The Art f Uncertainty accrding t the authr?
      A. It cvers varius tpics. B. It casts light n math thughts.
      C. It satisfies maths prfessinals. D. It makes sense t rdinary peple.
      14. Why des the authr mentin Bayes’s therem in paragraph 3?
      A. T prve the reliability f intuitin. B. T reveal the bk’s academic nature.
      C. T underline the deep truth f judgement. D. T demnstrate Spiegelhalter’s writing apprach.
      15. What is the text mainly abut?
      A A guidebk t teaching mathematics. B. A bk review n understanding prbability.
      C. A statistical analysis f new vaccine safety. D. An intrductin t a master’s prgram in maths.
