It was a sunny Friday mrning in Scastee, as 80-year-ld Jhn Farr put n his bicycle gear(装置) utside Habitat fr Humanity f Hrry Cunty ReStre.
"Here we are just cranking it ut," laughed Farr, as he prepared fr his 800-mile Bike 2 Build ride. "Spending the whle day utside like that is really a nice experience." This was his 20th and the lngest ride fr Habitat fr Humanity.
Farr traveled frm his hmetwn t Chicag in the past, as well as ther shrter rides. His wife Catherine said he even rde cast t cast, but he was accmpanied by a friend. Fr this jurney, Farr was riding alne. He said it was imprtant t spread awareness fr the rganizatin. "I think a family that lives in a decent hme has a crack at a better life," said Farr. "I think Habitat fr Humanity is a real fundatin-building rganizatin, a real cntributr t the welfare f ur natin."
Farr's 14-day trip started in Hrry Cunty n Friday mrning. Fr his first leg, he planned abut 70 miles daily. He said he hped t average abut 10 miles fr each hur he was pedaling(踩踏板). "I'm really int wildlife," said Farr. "S I'm lking fr birds. I'll stp fr rad kill. I'm srt f a wacky(古怪的) persn, maybe."
He said it tk a few days t get settled n his bike. He said bicycling away frm rads with heavy traffic culd be difficult. But it was a task he was willing t take n, as he tried t inspire thers. "I'm certainly nt superhuman r anything. I've had a hip replacement. I've had heart surgery. I've had prstate cancer," explained Farr.
Starting as a vlunteer with Habitat fr Humanity in his hmetwn f Clearfield Cunty, Pennsylvania, he's nw president f his chapter. Farr raised mre than 23,000lastyearandmrethan100,000 in his tw-decade rides.

Dreams can indeed be emtinal and smetimes scary. But dreams can be enjyable, t—maybe yu've had a dream s delightful that yu were disappinted t wake up and realize it wasn't reality.
Are the images in yur dreams in vivid clr? Perhaps yu had a dream abut playing Candy Crush and can remember the brightly clred red, purple and yellw candies falling like a cascade(瀑布) in yur dream.
As a neurscientist wh studies sleep, I can tell yu that abut 70% t 80% f peple reprt dreaming in clr, as ppsed t thse whse dreams are just in shades f black and white. But this estimate may be lw, because scientists can't actually see what a dreamer sees. There's n advanced technlgy shwing them exactly what's happening in a dreamer's mind. Instead, they have t rely n what dreamers remember abut their dreams.
T study dreams, researchers ask peple t sleep in labratries, and they simply wake them while they're dreaming and then ask them what they were just thinking abut. It's pretty simple science, but it wrks.
Hw d scientists knw when peple are dreaming? Althugh dreams can ccur in any sleep stage, research has lng shwn that dreams are mst likely t ccur during rapid eye mvement sleep, r REM sleep.
Scientists can identify REM by the electrical activity n yur scalp(头皮) and yur eye mvements. They d this by using an electrencephalgram, which uses several small electrdes(电极) placed directly n the scalp t measure brain activity. During REM sleep, the dreamer's eyes mve back and frth repeatedly. This likely means they're scanning—that is, lking arund in their dream.
That's when dream researchers wake up their participants. Dreams are really tricky t study because they disappear s quickly. S instead f asking participants t remember a dream—even ne they were having a mment ag—we ask them what they were just "thinking". Dreamers dn't have time t think r reflect; they just respnd—befre the dream is lst.
      28. Why is the game Candy Crush mentined in paragraph 2?
      A. T prvide an example.B. T present a methd.
      C. T intrduce a new tpic.D. T make a cmparisn.
      29. What's the authr's view n current dream studies?
      A. They tend t verestimate the rate f clred dreams.
      B. They shuld be cnducted in a natural envirnment.
      C. They're in need f help frm traditinal methds.
      D. They are largely based n dreamers' recall.
      30. What kind f rle des REM sleep play in the scientists' study f dreaming?
      A. A memry test.B. An emtin measure.
      C. A wake - up signal.D. A dream stimulatr.
      31. Why d researchers ask participants what they were "thinking" instead f what they were "dreaming"?
      A. Participants are easily cnfused by technical terms.
      B. They want t get faster and mre direct answers.
      C. They have t give clues t get accurate answers.
      D. Dreaming and thinking are mre r less the same.
      D
Every year, mnarch butterflies travel thusands f kilmeters as they migrate frm Canada t Mexic in the fall, just t head back nrth again in the spring. This is pssible thanks t the natural structure f their wings, which makes them lightweight, flexible, and excellent at flying—a unique cmbinatin the researchers wanted t cpy in their rbts.
Despite their small size, the natural design f mnarch butterfly wings is very cmplex, evlving t stand extremely lng jurneys. One f the fundamental principles that make these wings s efficient during flight is that they dn't just create thrust(推力) by actively mving, but als by passively bending their natural shape, which allws them t 'glide' withut spending additinal energy.
T achieve this, the research team, led by Oliver Gutfleisch at TU Darmstadt, built the rbtic butterfly wings by putting magnetic particles(磁性粒子) int a flexible plastic material. "The wings are made frm a magnetic cmpsite material that respnds t external magnetic fields," said Kilian Schäfer, c - authr f the study. "When a magnetic field is applied, the magnetic particles cause the wings t bend, cpying the mvement f real butterfly wings."
Using 3D printing, the researchers created 12 different wing designs with different sizes t test their behavir using a mix f experimental tests and cmputer simulatins. Sme f the designs als recreated vein(翅脉) patterns in their design that cpied thse fund in mnarch butterfly wings t test if these structures culd imprve their perfrmance. What they fund was that larger wings—abut 28 mm lng—with vein patterns were less rigid and easier t bend, making them better at adapting their shape during flight.
In their tests, the scientists als fund that butterflies that were 3D - printed using higher energy laser(激光) settings were thinner and better at bending. Hwever, they were als mre delicate and easily damaged. "The biggest challenge was creating thin, flexible structures with vein patterns that were still functinal while being less than a millimeter thick," said Schäfer. "Ensuring that these features were preserved required fine - tuning 3D printing prcess, particularly the laser energy settings, t achieve the desired mechanical prperties."
      32. Hw did the researchers make the rbtic wings fly?
      A. By applying external magnetic fields.
      B. By using the restrative frce f the plastic.
      C. By filling them with air pressure.
      D. By attaching tiny mechanical mtrs.
      33. What did the scientists find abut the 3D - printed rbtic wings?
      A. All wing designs shwed identical flight behavir.
      B. Smaller wings kept rbts' energy requirement lw.
      C. Larger wings with vein patterns perfrmed the best.
      D. The vein patterns made wings rigid and wrse fr flight.
      34. What is the message implied in the last paragraph?
      A. 3D printing helped prduce strnger rbtic butterflies.
      B. Adjusting laser energy culd make ideal rbtic butterflies.
      C. Magnetic material made flying rbts unable t functin well.
      D. Higher energy settings ensured wings were mre adaptable.
      35. What can be a suitable title fr the text?
      A. Mnarch Butterfly Migratin Is Simply Magical
      B. Butterflies Lead t Artificial Clrs fr 3D Printing
      C. Butterflies' Mvements Reveal Earth's Magnetic Field
      D. Mnarch Butterflies Have Inspired the Rbtic Wings
