(原创题)A new study in STEM (Science, Technlgy, Engineering, and Mathematics) fields reveals hw students' perceptins f effrt influence their success. Researchers distinguished between "criterin effrt"—simply believing ne studies hard—and "cmparative effrt"—believing ne must wrk harder than peers.
The results shw that cmparative effrt can be damaging. When students feel they must wrk harder than thers, they ften interpret this as a sign f lacking natural talent. This hurts their "science self-cncept"—the belief that they can succeed in science. After analyzing data frm 690 chemistry students, researchers fund that bth male and female students generally viewed extra effrt as a signal f lwer ability, which weakens their cnfidence.
In cntrast, criterin effrt is beneficial. Students wh believe they wrk hard, withut cmparing themselves t thers, tend t have a better self-cncept. This pattern is particularly strng fr wmen. Wmen may realize they need t wrk hard t vercme steretypes (fixed ideas) that wmen are weak in science. Cnsequently, wmen wh simply perceive themselves as wrking hard tend t perfrm better and feel mre cnfident abut their scientific abilities.
Hwever, men respnd differently. Their cnfidence is mre influenced by their past actual achievements than by their perceptin f effrt. The study als revealed a feedback lp between effrt and grades. Believing in ne's hard wrk was linked t higher test scres, while cmparing with thers usually led t lwer perfrmance. This finding highlights the imprtance f early psitive experiences fr students t understand the link between effrt and success.
Early STEM classes are famusly difficult and ften screen ut students wh feel they cannt succeed. Researchers suggest that students shuld fcus n their wn wrk and prgress rather than cmparing themselves t peers. Understanding that effrt is necessary fr success, nt a sign f failure, can help talented students remain in the science field.
24.Why is cmparative effrt harmful t students' science self-cncept?
      A. It leads t pr grades in exams.
      B. It implies a lack f natural ability.
      C. It distracts attentin frm learning.
      D. It ignres the actual difficulty f the subject.
25.Hw des the perceptin f hard wrk affect female students?
      A. They becme less cnfident than men.
      B. They tend t questin their wn talent.
      C. They generally view it as a psitive sign.
      D. They are mre influenced by past achievements.
26.What can be inferred abut the relatinship between effrt and achievement?
      A. High scres always result frm hard wrk.
      B. Early success can encurage further hard wrk.
      C. Men benefit mre frm effrt than wmen d.
      D. Cmparative effrt guarantees better perfrmance.
27.What are researchers advising STEM students t d?
      A. Avid difficult intrductry curses.
      B. Realize effrt is a sign f failure.
      C. Fcus n their wn individual effrt.
      D. Believe in their talent regardless f gender.

(原创题)Fr decades, pathlgy(病理学) has been the essential fundatin f cancer diagnsis. A pathlgist (a dctr wh studies diseases) examines a very thin slice f human tissue under a micrscpe. T these trained specialists, the clrful image f pink swirls and purple dts is like a graded test withut a student's name attached t it. It cntains vital infrmatin abut the disease, but ffers n clues abut the patient's identity, race, r backgrund. Ideally, this medical evaluatin shuld be cmpletely bjective.
Hwever, this assumptin des nt fully apply t artificial intelligence (AI). A recent study reveals that AI mdels designed t diagnse cancer can actually infer demgraphic (ppulatin) details directly frm the tissue slides. This unexpected ability creates bias, causing the systems t perfrm differently fr varius grups. Fr instance, the mdels were less accurate in distinguishing lung cancer types in African American patients and males. They als shwed reduced accuracy when identifying breast cancer subtypes in yunger patients. These errrs appeared in a significant prtin f diagnstic tasks.
The team pinpinted three key reasns fr these biases. First, training data are ften uneven because samples are easier t btain frm sme grups than thers. Secnd, differences in disease incidence (hw ften a disease happens) exist; sme cancers are mre cmmn in specific ppulatins, making the AI verly specialized fr them. Third, AI mdels are pwerful enugh t detect subtle mlecular (tiny bilgical) differences acrss grups. They use these signals as shrtcuts t classify cancer, which leads t failure when thse signals are less cmmn in ther ppulatins.
T address the prblem, the team created a framewrk called FAIR-Path. Based n a methd knwn as cntrastive learning, it mdifies the AI training prcess. This apprach helps the AI fcus n critical distinctins between cancer types while reducing attentin t irrelevant persnal characteristics like age r race. It adjusts hw the system interprets what it sees, frcing it t priritize disease features ver demgraphic clues.
The results are highly significant. When applied, FAIR-Path reduced diagnstic disparities by nearly 90 percent. This success suggests that imprving fairness des nt require majr changes t existing systems. Instead, with careful design and rutine evaluatin fr bias, we can develp medical AI tls that prvide fast, accurate, and fair diagnses fr every patient, ensuring reliable health care fr all sciety.
      28. Hw d human pathlgists differ frm AI mdels in evaluating tissue samples?
      A. Humans ignre the disease signs t fcus n patient identity.
      B. Humans are less accurate than AI in distinguishing cancer types.
      C. AI mdels rely entirely n the patient’s self-reprted infrmatin.
      D. AI mdels can detect hidden demgraphic details frm images.
      29. Why d AI mdels struggle t diagnse certain cancers in specific ppulatins?
      A. They fail t detect any mlecular differences in the tissue.
      B. They are nt trained with enugh data frm any grup.
      C. They cannt identify the visual signs f the disease itself.
      D. They rely n shrtcuts linked t demgraphic-specific signals.
      30. Hw des the FAIR-Path framewrk functin t reduce bias?
      A. By guiding the AI t fcus n key disease features nly.
      B. By replacing the existing AI systems with new nes entirely.
      C. By remving all persnal infrmatin frm the medical recrds.
      D. By balancing the number f samples frm all demgraphic grups.
      31. What des the authr imply abut the future f medical AI in the last paragraph?
      A. Fair AI systems are impssible withut massive changes.
      B. AI will eventually replace human experts in pathlgy labs.
      C. Careful design can lead t fairer and mre reliable AI tls.
      D. The bias in medical AI has been cmpletely slved frever.
      D
(原创题)Yur eyes culd reveal hw fast yu’re aging, scientists say. Accrding t new research frm McMaster University and the Ppulatin Health Research Institute, the tiny bld vessels within the eyes may ffer pwerful clues abut a persn's risk f heart disease and hw quickly their bdy is aging. Published in the jurnal Science Advances, the study suggests that simple retinal (视网膜) eye scans culd eventually serve as a nn-invasive (不需要侵入身体的) tl t evaluate bth heart health and bilgical aging. This culd ne day help dctrs detect prblems befre symptms appear and guide preventive care.
The eyes prvide a unique windw t view the bdy's circulatry (循环) system. "Changes in the eye's bld vessels ften mirrr changes happening thrughut the bdy's small vessels," explains Marie Pigeyre, the study's lead authr. By cnnecting retinal scans, genetics, and bld bimarkers (标志物), researchers uncvered mlecular pathways that help explain hw aging affects the bld vessel system. This cnnectin allws scientists t gain a deeper understanding f the aging prcess than ever befre.
T explre these relatinships, scientists analyzed eye images, genetic prfiles, and bld samples frm ver 74,000 participants in fur large studies. Their analysis fund that peple with simpler and less branched eye vessels were mre likely t have heart disease. Cmpared t thse with mre cmplex vessels, these individuals als shwed signs f accelerated aging, including increased inflammatin (炎症) and a reduced lifespan.
A deeper lk at bld markers and genetic data revealed bilgical mechanisms that may drive these changes. Researchers identified several key prteins linked t inflammatin and bld vessel aging, pening new avenues fr drug develpment. These findings pint t ptential drug targets fr slwing bld vessel aging, reducing the burden f heart diseases, and ultimately imprving lifespan.
Currently, assessing aging-related cnditins like heart disease, strke, and dementia usually requires multiple, cmplex tests. Researchers hpe that eye imaging culd ne day simplify this prcess, ffering a fast and accessible measure f aging and heart risks. Hwever, they nte that fr nw, such scans are just ne part f a brader clinical picture that still requires cmprehensive testing. While prmising, the current technlgy is nt advanced enugh t replace existing medical methds.
      32. What is the ptential future benefit f simple eye scans?
      A. T replace all cmplex medical tests immediately.
      B. T cure heart disease and inflammatin cmpletely.
      C. T evaluate heart health and bilgical aging early.
      D. T increase the number f bld vessel branches.
      33. Why are eyes cnsidered valuable fr studying the bdy's circulatin?
      A. Because they age faster than ther rgans in humans.
      B. Because they are the nly place t find genetic bimarkers.
      C. Because they cntain the largest bld vessels in the bdy.
      D. Because vessel changes in eyes reflect thse in the whle bdy.
      34. What can be inferred abut peple with simpler and less branched eye vessels?
      A. They are less likely t suffer frm heart attacks.
      B. They usually have a lnger lifespan than thers.
      C. They shw signs f slwer bilgical aging.
      D. They tend t have higher levels f inflammatin.
      35. What is the authr’s attitude twards the current eye scanning technlgy?
      A. It is a perfect replacement fr existing medical methds.
      B. It is the nly tl needed t assess aging risks.
      C. It is a helpful but currently limited part f checkups.
      D. It is t cmplex t be used in daily clinical practice.

Prcrastinatin, the habit f delaying tasks despite negative cnsequences, is a cmmn issue amng students. Typical behavirs include repeatedly checking messages, rganizing unimprtant items, r waiting until the last minute t begin assignments.
36 It can stem frm fear f failure, perfectinism, r lack f mtivatin. Tasks that seem bring, difficult, r unstructured are mre likely t be pstpned. Additinally, sme students prcrastinate due t anxiety abut being evaluated, while thers simply struggle with time management. 37
Frtunately, varius strategies can help vercme prcrastinatin. Experts emphasize that understanding the rt cause is essential fr designing effective slutins. 38 If anxiety is the main reasn, practicing relaxatin techniques befre starting wrk may be helpful. Fr thse trubled by perfectinism, setting “gd enugh” standards and fcusing n prgress rather than perfectin can encurage earlier engagement. Teachers can supprt students by prviding clear instructins and peridic checkpints. 39
40 Fr instance, breaking a large prject int small steps and setting deadlines fr each part can reduce feelings f being verwhelmed. Creating a tidy wrkspace and turning ff scial media ntificatins als minimize distractins. Overcming prcrastinatin is a gradual prcess that requires patience and cnsistent practice f these strategies. By starting small and celebrating each step f prgress, students can gradually build mtivatin, replace ld habits with mre prductive nes, and ultimately regain a sense f cntrl and accmplishment in their academic and persnal lives.
A.This habit may arise frm multiple psychlgical factrs.
B.Different causes f prcrastinatin require specific respnses.
C.Learning t priritize tasks is a key step twards self- discipline.
D.Sme ther simple methds can make it easier fr putters- ff as well.
E.Immediate actin is crucial since such situatins tend t wrsen gradually.
F.Therefre, it is vital t seek prfessinal help nce prcrastinatin is identified.
G.Family members may als encurage students by sharing their wn experiences.

I will never frget that cl, crisp Octber mrning. The city was just waking up, but the streets were already buzzing with energy fr the Annual Autumn Half Marathn. This was the day my father and I had trained three lng years fr. We std tgether in the starting line, surrunded by thusands f runners, yet in that mment, it felt like it was just the tw f us against the curse.
Familiar faces frm ur running club and my schl flashed acrss my view in the crwd. I glanced at my father and saw the same mix f nervus excitement that I felt reflected n his face. He gave my shulder a quick squeeze just befre the starting hrn blared, and we were ff.
Fr the first ten kilmeters, we fund ur rhythm tgether. The careful training, the early mrnings, the strict nutritin plan — it had all led t this. My friends hadn’t seen much f me during peak training weeks, but they understd this dream we shared. We didn’t start t fast, just as we’d practiced, finding ur pace while thers sprinted ahead prematurely.
As in all my races, I didn’t rush t the frnt at the start; I lved the thrill f passing cmpetitrs ne by ne as my steady strength utlasted their hasty bursts f speed.
Then, arund the fifteenth kilmeter, I felt my energy beginning t fade. The gentle upward slpe f the city bridge felt steeper than it shuld have. My breathing became labred, and my pace slwed despite my best effrts. My father, running steadily beside me, nticed immediately.
“Stay with me, sweetheart,” he encuraged, his vice calm but firm. “Just a little further nw.”
But my legs had turned t lead. As we apprached the final kilmeter, with the finish line arch visible in the distance, my knees weakened unexpectedly. My strength ran ut, and I lst my balance, barely catching myself n a nearby handrail.

Runners began t stream past us.
