Nearly 13,000 cultural relics have been unearthed frm six pits (坑) f the Sanxingdui Ruins site, including many bjects and statues never seen befre, and they help present a mre cmplete view f the culture f the ancient Shu Kingdm.
The digging wrk mainly aimed at the sacrificial (献祭的) area f the ruins and six newly discvered pits. Frm 2020 t 2022, a ttal area f 1,834 square meters was explred in the sacrificial area, which cvered a ttal area f nearly 13,000 square meters.
The significant discveries include thusands f cultural relics made f different materials such as brnze, gld and jade and unearthed in six new pits, ruins f architecture, time f building the pits and the prf f exchanges between the ancient Shu Kingdm and the Central Plains in the Shang dynasty. Amng the cultural relics newly unearthed, archaelgists fund 3,155 cmparatively cmplete relics.
“All cultural relics have significant meanings fr archaelgical research. If I have t chse ne, I want t select the crwned brnze statue with a snake’s bdy,” said Ran Hnglin, directr f the Sanxingdui Cultural Relics and Archelgy Research Institute. He nted that the relics prve the diversity f Chinese culture and ffer anther pwerful example f Chinese civilizatin’s unity in diversity, because the brnze statue’s shape melted cultural factrs f different areas in China during ancient times.
Researchers used Carbn-14 dating t cnfirm that nearly 200 samples unearthed in different pits were made frm 1131 BC t 1012 BC, s they cncluded that in additin t the fifth and sixth pits appearing later, the rest f the pits shuld have been built in the late Shang dynasty, dating frm 3,000 t 3,200 years ag. The discvery has slved an argument ver the age f sacrificial pits fund in the past three decades.
“The digging and research wrk is cntinuing. There will be mre discveries with further wrk.” Ran said.
