Marine (海洋) bilgist Jim Darling has studied the sngs f humpback whales fr mre than 25 years. In the water, Chadwick heard the whale’s sngs in a way he never heard them befre. “Suddenly, I n lnger heard the whale’s vice in my ears,” he said. “I felt it inside my head and bnes.” When swimming with the whale, Chadwick culd see that the whale was aware f him, but nt alarmed by his presence. Up in the bat, Darling recrded the whale’s sng, which can be lng and cmplex, smetimes lasting fr 30 minutes r mre. Actually, they are perhaps the lngest sngs sung by any animal.
Darling says that nly male humpbacks sing, but fr unknwn reasns, it was previusly thught that they sang t attract females, but scientists shwed this was incrrect when they played recrdings f whale sngs in the cean and the female whales did nt respnd. Anther idea is that male humpbacks cmpete with each ther using sngs, just as ther male animals n land d using their hrns r sharp teeth.
Researchers have als fund that humpback whale sngs are different in different parts f the wrld, perhaps like whale natinal sngs. They may als be like hit tunes n the radi, changing ver time—frm ne year t the next, r even ver a single breeding seasn when they prduce yung.
Anther member f the research team, phtgrapher Flip Nicklin, recalls a special mment he had while interacting with a humpback. While he was snrkeling(潜水) sme distance frm the huge animal, it apprached him until it was just a few metres away. It then gently carried Nicklin twards its eye with a flipper(鳍肢), as if examine him. Adlescents wh rutinely engaged in mderate and energetic exercise shwed lng-term imprvements in their academic perfrmance, the British Jurnal f Sprts Medicine study reprted.

When they fllwed up with the kids at age 13, their academic scres were still linked t hw much they had exercised when they were 11 years ld.
