Fashin inspired by traditinal Chinese culture is experiencing revived glbal interest, with designers and their cllectins increasingly impressing fashin shw audiences. At China-France Fashin Week, held at the China Cultural Center in Paris, designers shwed 30 utfits (服装), each presenting the cultural heritage f Quanzhu, a castal city in East China’s Fujian prvince, which became a UNESCO Wrld Heritage Site in 2021.
“The event prmted a dialgue between traditin and mdernity, Eastern and Western aesthetics (美学),” says designer Meng Yueming, 33. Brrwing elements (元素) f the city’s heritage, including zanhua, the traditinal dress f Hui’an wmen, lcal tea culture, and architecture, Meng mixed traditinal and mdern elements int his designs.
Describing the shw as “fantastic”, Isabelle Lawsn, executive directr f the French Internatinal Art Saln, says it was a “brilliant” idea fr the designers t transfrm Quanzhu’s landmarks and architecture int the designs.
The week was designed t deepen China-France cultural exchange and strengthen cperatin in the cultural and creative industries between China and France.
“Befre this shw, my understanding f traditinal culture was superficial, but when I dug deeper, I fund a treasure in frnt f me t explre,” Meng says, adding that he feels that using Chinese elements is imprtant fr native designers and cmpanies t g glbal.
Meng’s experience highlights hw an increasing number f designers are drawing n their heritage and cultural traditins while celebrating their wn cultural identity. Published in the jurnal Neurn by Ch and his team, the research shws hw the team used mice t study the pathways between the area f the brain that prcesses a specific sund and the area respnsible fr emtinal memries. In the first part f the experiment the team played high-pitched (高音的) and lw-pitched sunds t mice, bth with a small electric shck t their feet. They nticed when the high-pitched sund was later played n its wn, the mice became still with fear; n such behavir was seen when the lw-pitched sund was played. The team fund that when mice were repeatedly given high-pitched sunds withut the shcks they lst their fear — a prcess knwn as fear extinctin.
“Fear extinctin is a therapy (疗法) used in treating pst-traumatic stress disrder,” said Ch. But he said, “after therapy, fr example tw weeks, the fear returns. Fear extinctin is nt an eraser f fear memry. It just hides the fear memry fr a shrt time.”
But the team later discvered that using a methd called ptgenetics, they culd truly erase the fear memries. They intrduced specific genes (基因) int the brain cells (细胞) f the mice. These genes made the cells react t light, allwing researchers t cntrl them. When the mice, wh had develped the fear f the high-pitched sund, were in the lw-frequency light, it weakened the cnnectins in their brain related t that sund. As a result, the mice n lnger appeared fearful when they heard the high-pitched sund, and the fear didn’t return.
