At the start and end f every schl day, many Australian children head t the car park t get picked up. While they’ re waiting, they will be breathing in a mix f harmful pllutants because many parents leave their car engines idling (未熄火) while parked.
Children are particularly delicate. They breathe in and ut mre ften, have a greater lung surface area relative t their bdy size and are shrter than adults, placing them clser t harmful emissins frm vehicles. Even brief expsure can increase the risk f lung-related illness.
T tackle the prblem, we created the Idle Off prgram. We ran three hands-n sessins fr 40 students in Melburne’s inner western suburbs, where we presented infrmatin abut air pllutin frm vehicle emissins and what these smgs culd d t human health and the climate. While raising awareness f issues is imprtant, we wanted t give students the tls t make a visible change. T that end, ur sessins fcused n hw t advcate fr change. Students designed psters and gave speeches n the tpic. Sme stuck psters up arund car parks. Others used their prepared ntes t talk t their parents abut why keeping engines running while parked was a prblem wrth handling.
A week after the prgram, we bserved a drp in idling f 18% during mrning drp-ff and 40% during afternn pick-up. The differing figures made sense, because parents were ften in a rush t get t wrk in the mrnings and were less likely t turn ff their cars fr a quick gdbye. After the prgram, the number f students believing children were able t advcate fr change rse frm 68% t 97%. The parents f ur participants als perceived a grwing sense f respnsibility bth in their children and in themselves.
The prgram shws children are nt nly capable f understanding cmplex issues, but able t influence adults, shape cnversatins and drive actual behaviur change, which culd be used t address ther envirnmental issues.

With a cin-sized device planted (植入) in his brain, ne 37-year-ld man wh lst all fur limbs in an accident 13 years ag can nw type, text and even play vide games using nthing but his thughts. The miracle was achieved after a brain-cmputer interface (BCI) peratin and three weeks f adaptive training.
The grundbreaking prcedure was cnducted by researchers frm the Beijing-based Center fr Excellence in Brain Science and Intelligence Technlgy (CEBSIT) in partnership with Shanghai-based Huashan Hspital, Fudan University. Their hme-made implant, currently the wrld’s smallest brain-cntrlled ne, measures 26 mm acrss and under 6 mm thick — half the size develped by Neuralink — a wrld famus brain-cmputer cmpany.
Unlike traditinal surgeries requiring large-scale bne remval, this peratin invlved thinning a small bne area abve the mtr crtex (皮层) and making a 5-mm cut t insert ribbn-like metal lines — abut 1% the width f a human hair and 100 times mre flexible than similar prducts. “The technique is mature, safe and cst-effective, taking merely abut 20 t 30 minutes.” said principal investigatr f the team Lu Junfeng. In cntrast, patients previusly had t wear heavy metal helmets t establish signal transmissin and cntrl between their brains and external devices, a limitatin the new implantable device has nw vercme.
T break thrugh the bttlenecks in device size, system integratin and wireless transmissin, CEBsit cnsistently faced tremendus challenges, and finally btained China’s first BCI permit in late 2024. Its clinical trials accrd primacy t patients based n the severity, specifically targeting individuals wh stand t gain the mst significant quality-f-life imprvements frm BCI technlgy.
Xiyujin He, a partner frm a BCI cmpany based in Hangzhu, Zhejiang Prvince, nted, “Nw, with AI technlgy, we can finally interpret the brain’s neural cding (神经编码). This nt nly drives BCI develpment but als brings new pssibilities fr treating brain-related disrders. ” Hwever, she emphasized that sme peple mythlgize the technlgy, assuming it can d anything. Others swing t the ppsite extreme, fearing BCIs culd steal their thughts r even cntrl their minds.
“Establishing a scientific, reasnable public understanding is crucial fr respnsible adptin,” she said.
8. What makes the implant develped by CEBsit special?
A. It takes the shrtest time t perfrm.
B. It is the tiniest implant ever reprted.
C. It csts the least amng all BCI devices.
D. It is 100 times mre flexible than similar prducts.
9. What des the third paragraph mainly fcus n?
A. The prcedures f the new BCI technlgy.
B. The limitatins f traditinal BCI technlgy.
C. The imprvements f traditinal BCI technlgy.
D. The clinical advantages f the new BCI technlgy.
10. What des the underlined phrase “accrd primacy t” in paragraph 4 prbably mean?
A. Offer resistance t.B. Give pririty t.
C. Shw sympathy t.D. extend cperatin t.
11. What is Xiyujin He’s attitude twards BCI technlgy?
A. Cautius.B. Apprving.

N lin in Venice attracts mre eyes than the brnze winged creature in St. Mark’s Square. Fr ver seven hundred years, the Lin f Venice has std there, verlking the city’s main square, yet its birth file remains empty.
“While there isn’t a single dcument abut wh made the sculpture and where it came frm, a 13th-century nte recrds that the artwrk needed taking dwn fr restratin, implying that it had been n display fr sme time. Thus, schlars have lng assumed that the sculpture dated t the 1260s, when Venice chse the winged lin as its icnic symbl. Its style, hwever, matches n Eurpean wrks f that time,” says Massim Vidale, an archaelgist frm the University f Padua.
T determine what the Lin riginally lked like and where it came frm, Vidale’s team directed their attentin t an unlikely place — China. They had nticed strng similarities between the Lin and the statues called Zhenmushu that served as tmb guardians in the Tang Dynasty. The similarities are especially recgnizable in the muth, nse, teeth, and frehead wrinkles.
Tday, the Lin wears a brnze “wig (假发),” and when it is remved, it’s pssible t see scars n the tp f its head likely left behind when the hrns were remved. T further investigate its rigin, they analyzed the materials used t create the statue. As a result, the chemical prperties f samples frm the neck and chest perfectly matched thse fund in China’s Lwer Yangtze River Basin, seemingly putting arguments ver the Lin’s birthplace t rest.
Abut hw an ancient Chinese statue ended up 5,000 miles away in the middle f Venice, the team turned t Niccl and Maffe Pl, father and uncle f famed Venetian explrer Marc Pl. The tw visited Beijing in the 1260s, arund the time the winged lin was adpted as Venice’s fficial symbl. The Pls may have shipped the fierce-lking sculpture hme and had it refashined fr the square, quietly recunting an early chapter f crss-cntinent cntact: a Chinese tmb guardian rebrn as a public icn, a living ftnte t an east-west encunter.
12. What made Vidale’s team dubt the assumptin abut the Lin’s rigin?
A. A 13th-century restratin recrd.
B. The lack f rigin-related dcuments.
C. Its status as Venice’s mst eye-catching lin.
D. Its style unmatched by 1260s Eurpean wrks.
13. Hw did the team cnduct the Lin’s study?
A. By interviewing Pl-family descendants.
B. By remving its wig t study the riginal design.
C. By cmparing the appearance and analyzing materials.
D. By reviewing dcuments and testing the brnze cmpsitin.
14. What can we learn abut the Lin frm the passage?
A. It became Venice’s icn n its arrival.
B. It had hrns befre it was transfrmed.
C. It was brught t Venice by Marc Pl.
D. It was created in the Lwer Yangtze River Basin.
15. Which f the fllwing can be the best title?
A. The Pl Brthers Bridge East and West
B. Brnze Chemistry Unlcks the Lin’s Origin
C. Tmb Guardian: An Attractive Icn fr Venetians
D. St. Mark’s Lin: A Symbl f Venice-China Exchange

When yu live a lng time with a tree, she becmes a part f yur life.
36 years ag, when we settled n the farm, the tree was already ld. We figured she was abut 160 years ld. Her trunk split int fur twisted arms that spread ut like a welcming hug.
As seasns came and went, the ancient tree brught us many happy mments. Spring brught sft green leaves shading us; n summer nights, children chased fireflies under her branches; then autumn came, and she turned bright red and gld, cvering the grass with a yellw blanket we’d jump int with bare feet. Seeds stuck t ur feet like tiny treasures. In winter, she was cvered with snw. Children made snwmen and had snwball fights under her branches.
Thirty-six years f memries grew alng with her. I still remember ur daughter’s fifth birthday, when we hung a swing frm ne f her strngest branches — her laughter eched as she swung higher. Our sn carved his name, Jack, int the trunk at age ten. Even the cats had favrite spts: a bend in the branches where they’d sleep in sunlight, watching chickens peck (啄) fallen seeds. Whenever I brushed my fingers against that name — still visible, I thught f all thse bright mments. We thught she’d stand frever.
Then ne mrning, my husband pinted t her thinning leaves. “She’s nt ding well,” he said. In ne seasn, her entire left side started cming dwn. But I hped we culd save her. I knew I was t attached t her. We’d watered thrugh dry seasns, cleared her base, yet climate change wre her dwn. I culdn’t fl myself any mre. It had becme t dangerus t walk underneath her.
Last winter, her branches stayed bare (光秃秃的) lnger than usual, with n new leaves grwing in March. By April, we knew it was time. When the wdwrker Crey Snyder came, I stayed inside, electric saws raring like sad cries.
She fell, leaving nly a bare trunk and sme strng branches. I wndered if I culd use these remaining pieces t make smething new in her memry.
