When Karyna Kvalevska, an 18-year-ld frm Ukraine, first visited China in 2019 as part f a Cnfucius Institute summer exchange prgram, she never imagined the cuntry wuld ne day becme her secnd hme.
The prgram began in Anhui prvince, where she eagerly tk n the challenge f learning an entirely new language. Chinese wasn’t easy but it was exciting. “It’s s different frm Ukrainian r Russian,” she said. “It felt like stepping int a whle new wrld.”
Kvalevska was amazed by the kindness and genersity she encuntered, even thugh she was a cmplete stranger. “It was unbelievable,” she said. “I fell in lve with the welcming peple, the delicius fd, and the beautiful cities. I prmised myself that I wuld cme back ne day.”
Three years later, she kept that prmise and returned. Nw she lives in Yuncheng, Shanxi prvince, with her Chinese husband, and she has begun dcumenting her everyday experiences thrugh shrt vides n Xiahngshu (RedNte), Sina Weib, and Duyin (the Chinese versin f TikTk).
Her cheerful clips — whether tasting Shanxi’s signature dishes, jining villagers fr square dancing, explring traditinal crafts, r trying ut new technlgies — have attracted thusands f fllwers bth in China and verseas.
After living in China fr mre than three years, Kvalevska says she has develped a deep sense f belnging. “China is my secnd hme-the happiest place I’ve ever lived,” she said. “I’m cnstantly tuched by the warmth, friendliness, and willingness f peple here t help ne anther.”

On windws, dust can blck light and make things hard t see. On slar panels, dust can cver the light-receiving parts and lwer their efficiency.
Nature has many self-cleaning examples, such as ltus leaves (荷叶) and insect wings, which use their special surface and water t wash away dust. Scientists have tried t cpy these natural designs. Hwever, mst f these methds need water t wrk, which makes them rely n wet weather. They are nt useful in dry places n Earth r in space where there is n water.
This new glass prvides a water-free slutin. By studying hw dust particles (粒子) mve under an electric field (电场), the researchers created a very thin, transparent (透明的) glass - nly 0.62 mm thick. When turned n, it can clean ver 97.5%f the dust by itself.
Mrever, the glass can als prevent new dust frm settling. When the electric field is n, it changes the path f charged dust particles in the air, keeping the surface cleaner fr lnger. This is called the “particle shielding effect,” which reduces dust buildup by almst 90%.
Because the glass is highly transparent and blcks very little visible light, it is perfect fr use in slar panels, car windshields, greenhuses, and skyscraper windws-places where clear visin and energy efficiency are imprtant.
Better yet, this new glass is viable. It uses cmmn materials, and the prductin prcess fits well with existing factry methds. This means it can be easily prduced in large amunts withut needing expensive r special equipment.
