Standing n the lakeshre, my gaze drifts dwn t the tens-even hundreds f thusands f-small stnes scattered arund my bts, and I can't help but pause in wnder. Each was created frm hard surfaces, their edges sftening ver time.
And I wnder, can we learn frm a pile f rcks?
Even the tallest muntains have wrn dwn; nne are as tall as they were 1, 000 years ag. And much like a rck, I've fund my attitude has sftened and my desire t better understand thers has expanded with each trip arund the sun.
Once I t was a sharp rck cvered in pinty edges. Tday, after decades f the waters f life cursing ver me, my edges are sfter and mre understanding. I'm less likely t judge and mre interested in learning hw we can exist tgether.
But I'm nt a rck. I'm a human-being filled with all the drama built int my DNA.
Tw years ag, while traveling in the Pacific Nrthwest, I watched a restaurant wner ask a guy t leave fr nt falling in line with the rules. Nt frceful and nt rude. On the dr read a sign: "Please wear a mask befre entering ur restaurant. We dn't like it either, but let's all d what we can." But the guy tried t argue abut the nte.
I sat watching, understanding bth sides. I've been this guy befre, using my yuthful edges t chip away at the wrld. What I lst, hwever, was the ability t grw by lking thrugh thers' eyes, and thus the pssibility f finding cntent and success.
Yu can fit mre runded rcks in a jar than thse with sharp edges. The frmer lk fr ways t adjust and make rm fr thers; the latter never give an inch t accmmdate thers. Time, like the waters rlling against nce sharp stnes, changes us by washing away ur resistance t seeing the wrld frm anther's pint f view.
I placed a runded stne int my pcket. Mther Nature is hlding class again.

Finding a Mjave Desert trtise is getting harder in the American Suthwest. These trtises, with their dmed patterned shells, live in Califrnia, parts f Nevada, Arizna and nrthwestern Mexic. Hwever, they have lst habitat t develpment ver decades. Disease and climate change als put them at risk, threatening their existence.
Estimates shw that in fur ut f five main regins where the trtises live, abut 90% have disappeared since 1984. The Califrnia Department f Fish and Wildlife called them “threatened” in 1989, and the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service (USFWS) did the same a year later. This year, Califrnia tk a further step, declaring them “endangered” under the state’s Endangered Species Act — meaning they may g extinct withut prper management.
Krysten Kellum, a state agency spkespersn, said this status change culd help get mre funds fr their prtectin. Yet, Kristina Drake, a frmer USFWS fficial, said federal supprt faces challenges — the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service lst many wrkers, and its budget may be cut, and mre federal mney isn’t expected fr the trtises, which have lived in the desert fr at least 15 millin years.
Luckily, nnprfits like the Mjave Desert Land Trust still wrk t prtect the trtises and their habitat. Finding trtises is hard because they spend mst f their time undergrund in burrws (洞穴) t escape heat and predatrs like muntain lins. Scientists say the trtises’ decline is “death frm a thusand cuts” — caused by vehicle cllisins, habitat lss, climate change, and mre. Climate change makes temperatures higher and drughts lnger. A study during Califrnia’s 2012-2016 drught fund fewer female trtises, as laying eggs uses much water and prtein, which is wrse in drughts.
Trtises are imprtant “ecsystem engineers”. They dig 7 t 17 burrws yearly, and abandned nes becme hmes fr ther animals. Lsing them wuld harm the whle ecsystem. Thugh seeing tw trtises in a day is rare and special nw, nnprfits will keep fighting t prtect them.
      8. Why are the Mjave Desert trtises harder t spt?
      A. Because they have migrated t cmpletely new regins.
      B. Because their ppulatin has declined significantly.
      C. Because their patterned shells prvide perfect shelters.
      D. Because they are hiding frm human beings.
      9. What d Kristina Drake’s wrds shw abut federal supprt?
      A. It increases because f public demand.B. It will raise mre federal mney.
      C. It fcused n ther species instead.D. It is limited due t staff and budget issues.
      10. What can be the cause f the Mjave Desert trtise’s decline?
      A. It is the result f a cmplex cmbinatin f factrs.
      B. It is primarily due t a single and identifiable threat.
      C. It is mainly caused by a lack f public awareness.
      D. It is directly linked t a specific disease utbreak.
      11. What is the main idea f the passage?
      A. The living habits f Mjave Desert trtises.
      B. The reasns fr declaring trtises endangered.
      C. The effrts t prtect Mjave Desert trtises.
      D. The impact f climate change n trtises.
      D
As artificial intelligence (AI) takes ff, hw d we efficiently integrate it int ur lives and ur wrk? Bridging the gap between prmise and practice, Jann Spiess, an assciate prfessr at Stanfrd Graduate Schl f Business, is explring hw algrithms (算法) can be designed t mst effectively supprt — rather than replace — human decisin-makers.
“We dn’t have much wrk — yet — that takes design f the human-AI interface really seriusly,” says Spiess. “Our debate abut AI and the capabilities f AI is really misplaced, because it’s all abut ‘Is AI better than the human?’”, he cntinues. “I think instead we shuld be asking, ‘What are the cmplementary (互补) uses f AI?’”
If users rely t heavily n an algrithm, they may ignre relevant cntext r infrmatin the algrithm may nt knw. On the ther hand, if users view recmmendatins as verly cmplex r irrelevant, they may dismiss them altgether, frging any advantages algrithmic recmmendatins may prvide.
“Therefre, the best algrithm shuld take int accunt hw a human will interact with the infrmatin it prvides,” Spiess says. In a recent paper, Spiess utlines a cnceptual (概念的) design framewrk mdeling hw humans respnd t algrithmic recmmendatins — and presents a different apprach t building AI tls. This apprach is knwn as cmplementarity.
The researchers tested different recmmendatin strategies in an experiment, where participants made 25 hiring decisins with different levels f algrithmic assistance. Peple using a cmplementary algrithm — which ffered selective recmmendatins in cases where a human was likely t be uncertain r incrrect — made the mst accurate decisins, utperfrming thse using a purely predictive algrithm and thse using n algrithmic supprt.
It’s an encuraging result. “There’s much prmise arund AI imprving decisins,” says Spiess, wh’s particularly interested in applicatins that affect hw services are allcated (分配) in resurce-limited envirnments, such as placing teachers in underserved schl districts with limited budgets. “If yu culd use algrithms t imprve resurce allcatin, there are many high-value use cases in areas where we dn’t have ready r clear slutins,” he says.
      12. What is the main issue with current AI debates accrding t Spiess?
      A. Ignring the ptential f AI.
      B. Overemphasis n AI’s superirity.
      C. Misunderstanding AI’s purpse.
      D. Lack f fcus n AI’s efficiency.
      13. What des the underlined wrd “frging” in paragraph 3 mean?
      A. Abandning.B. Stressing.
      C. Admitting.D. Assessing.
      14. What des Spiess think is the key t effective AI design?
      A. Enhancing algrithm cmplexity.
      B. Reducing human dependence n AI.
      C. Cnsidering human-AI interactin.
      D. Imprving AI’s independent capability.
      15. What des the experiment n hiring decisins shw?
      A. Predictive algrithms were the mst helpful.
      B. Human judgment alne was the mst accurate.
      C. N algrithmic supprt was cmpletely the best.
      D. Cmplementary algrithms were highly effective.

      B. It is primarily due t a single and identifiable threat.
      C. It is mainly caused by a lack f public awareness.
      D. It is directly linked t a specific disease utbreak.
      11. What is the main idea f the passage?

      B. The reasns fr declaring trtises endangered.
      C. The effrts t prtect Mjave Desert trtises.
      D. The impact f climate change n trtises.

Knwing yu are curius abut the phenmenn f invlutin in China, I wuld like t share my views t help yu understand it better.
T put it briefly, invlutin refers t intense internal cmpetitin where participants strive hard but gain n bvius advantages ver ne anther. On the ne hand, such excessive internal cmpetitin brings drawbacks like heavy mental stress and wrk-life imbalance. Take students fr example, this means lng study hurs, cnstant anxiety abut falling behind, and little time fr rest. Hwever, getting int their ideal schls still stays difficult. On the ther hand, it drives prgress via tech innvatin and industry upgrades, letting peple enjy mre quality, affrdable gds and services. A typical case is electric vehicles. Fierce cmpetitin amng carmakers has made many advanced and affrdable cars accessible t rdinary peple.
As is knwn t all, everything has tw sides. We ught t view invlutin bjectively and avid fllwing its negative aspects blindly.
      Yurs sincerely,

At hme, things weren’t much better. My little brther was t yung t have anything t d with me. My elder brther was busy planning and preparing fr his cllege life. My lder sister was utging and never withut her friends. Dad was wrking in a faraway city. Mm, wh used t wait fr me t cme hme and was always there t give me a big hug when I had t get the bad feelings ff my chest, had als changed.
On the very first day I returned frm schl, she greeted me with criticism, “Carle, yur bedrm’s a disaster. Yu’re grwn up nw! Can’t yu keep it clean?”
At the mment, the last thing I needed was her criticism. I just wanted a big hug r a few heart-warm wrds frm her.
“Mm, I...” I tried t explain, but a phne ring cut me ff.
“One minute, Carle!” Mm said, turning t answer the phne.
I watched her discussing smething with her editr. I saw her ndding her head nw and then. Then she sat dwn by her desk t take ntes. I knew she was a hardwrking writer and a nice Mm wh was strict with herself and devted t us. I knew she’d been busy lately — but still, I culdn’t help feeling hurt and unseen.
Back t my rm, I started t d my math hmewrk. Unfrtunately, I made ne mistake after anther that day.
“Hw stupid I am!” I thught bitterly.

【答案】Each time I made a mistake, I wuld tear the paper ut. By the time I finished my hmewrk, the flr was cvered with piles f waste paper and my bedrm seemed even messier. Strangely, the bigger mess gave me a sense f satisfactin I had never experienced befre. I even cut sme f the waste paper int tiny pieces and threw them under the bed. Then I clsed the dr vilently and left hme withut a wrd.
I came hme very late in the evening. But when I dragged myself t my bedrm and pened the dr, I stpped in surprise — it was tidy and clean. Obviusly, Mm had cleaned it up after I left. As I std there, I realized that Mm’s lve hadn’t changed at all. And slwly, my lnging fr a hug was gradually replaced by a feeling that I wuld nly truly understand years later when I became a parent myself.
