The Whispers f Rck: A Gelgist’s Persnal and Cultural Thughts
      Reviewed by Jsh Trapani
In the bk The Whispers f Rck, gelgist Anjana Khatwa writes abut the strng ties between native cultures and the Earth’s rcks and landscapes. She believes that tday’s
sciety needs t find this cnnectin again. The bk includes different native stries linked t imprtant places, frm Japan's muntains t New Zealand's vlcan - shaped lands and the Black Hills in Nrth America.
Althugh the bk cvers many cultures, its argument is nt really new. Smetimes Khatwa's writing sunds like she is teaching a mral lessn. It creates versimplified cmparisn. Native peples live harmniusly with nature while thers nly make use f nature. She wrries that scientists may nt accept views frm nn - Western cultures, but there is n need t wrry.
The best parts f the bk are Khatwa's persnal stries. She bravely shares bth happy and sad mments frm her life. Studying rcks helped her see things clearly and find cmfrt. Her memry f visiting Kenya is especially tuching. At that place, she first became interested in gelgy as a yung girl.
Khatwa sees human life stries in the changes f rcks. Sme rcks g thrugh great heat and pressure t becme new and strnger, while ther rcks are trn frm their riginal places and left in freign lands. Hwever, reading this bk made me think abut my wn different interest in gelgy. I am interested in histry rather than humans prblems. I think the Earth's histry is very lng, but human prblems are very small. Khatwa's methd feels like teaching at times. But her central idea is very imprtant. It is this: if we cnnect with the Earth and stay pen t varius ideas, we can better prtect ur wrld and urselves.
      24. Hw des Jsh intrduce the bk's cntent in paragraph ne?
      A. By listing Khatw's academic achievements.
      B. By quting psitive reviews frm readers.
      C. By stating its theme and giving examples.
      D. By cmparing it with ther gelgy bks.
      25. What is a shrtcming f the bk accrding t the passage?
      A. Ignring Western scientific views.B. Cvering cultures f few places.
      C. Failing t include persnal stries.D. Lacking creativity in argument.
      26. Hw des the Jsh's view f gelgy differ frm Khatwa's?

If yu've ever thught it wuld be great t walk int a rm and knw whether a harmful airbrne virus is hanging arund, scientists have a device fr yu. Researchers have created a new machine, a little bigger than a bread maker, which can quickly detect the airbrne viruses. Rajan Chakrabarty, a scientist at Washingtn University in St. Luis, wrked with his team nnstp fr three years t create the detectr. One f the main challenges when they sample the airbrne viruses is cllecting enugh air t cncentrate viral particles(颗粒)at detectable levels. This detectr pulls in 1,000 cubic meters f air each minute, cmpared t previus detectrs which breathed in 2 t 8 cubic meters f air per minute.
"T trap the virus, we create an artificial cyclne(旋风)inside the sampler," Chakrabarty says. "By mving liquid arund at a high rate, viruses get trapped in the cyclne wall and cncentrated fr analysis. Any virus nt captured in the liquid is filtered(过滤)ut with a HEPA filter. After five minutes, the liquid is pumped t a bisensr. The bisensr cnsists f an electrde attached t a specialized immune system prtein that fights infectins much like antibdies but is smaller and tugher. The bisensr is based n a detectr."
T test the detectr, the researchers sent the device t the apartments f tw peple with viral infectins. "The device detected amunts f virus shed by the patients," Chakrabarty says. Air cllected frm an empty cnference rm shwed little sign f the virus. This indicates that the patients eliminated the virus and released it int the air thrugh actins like breathing, talking, cughing, r sneezing, but nly in very small amunts.
There are still sme challenges. Fr instance, the device is as nisy as a cleaner r a ringing phne. That's prbably t lud fr cntinuus use in a classrm r ffice, but culd be tlerated fr 10 minutes. Such detectrs cst much mney t build in a research lab. Cmmercial versins may be t expensive fr hme use but culd be used in hspitals, airprts, and ther public areas t survey fr the virus.
      28. What des the data in the first paragraph shw abut the new machine?
      A. The small size.B. The speedy virus detectin.
      C. The sampling time.D. The limited detectable level.
      29. What des Chakrabarty mainly say abut the new machine in paragraph 2?
      A. Its wrking prcess.B. Its maximum vlume.
      C. Its lgical ability t analyse viruses.D. Its special system t cncentrate air.
      30. What des the underlined wrd "shed" in paragraph 3 mean?
      A. Discvered. B. Indicated. C. Cntrlled. D. Remved.
      31. What is the main idea f the text?
      A. Scientists’ effrts t invent a virus sampler.
      B. A breakthrugh in virus detectin technlgy.
      C. Intrducing a new airbrne virus detectr.
      D. A device’s applicatin in public virus mnitring.

In a new study, Iwa Psychlgist Ed Wasserman gave the pigens cmplex categrizatin tests that high - level thinking wuld nt aid in slving. Instead, the pigens, by trial and errr, eventually were able t memrize enugh situatins in the test. This basic prcess f making assciatins — cnsidered a lwer - level thinking technique — is the same between the test - taking pigens and the latest AI advances.
The researchers sught t figure ut tw types f learning: ne declarative learning, is based n exercising reasn accrding t a set f rules r strategies — a s - called higher level f learning wned mstly by peple. The ther, assciative learning, centers n recgnizing and making cnnectins between bjects r patterns, such as "sky - blue" and "water - wet."
Wasserman’s team designed a difficult test t find ut whether the pigens use declarative r assciative learning. Each test pigen was shwn a stimulus (刺激) and had t decide, by pecking (啄) a buttn n the right r n the left, t which categry that stimulus belnged. What made the test s demanding was that n rules r lgic wuld help finish the task. They have t memrize the individual stimuli r regins frm where the stimuli ccur. Over hundreds f tests, the fur test pigens eventually upped their scre frm 50% t an average f 68% right.
"The pigens are like AI masters" Wasserman says. "Bth f them emply assciative learning, and yet that base - level thinking is what allwed the pigens t ultimately scre successfully." If peple were t take the same test, they’d scre prly and wuld prbably give up because they rely s heavily n rules r strategies. Thse rules wuld get in the way f learning. The pigen desn’t have that high - level thinking prcess. But it desn’t get in the way f their learning. In fact, in sme ways it facilitates it.
"Peple are stunned by AI ding amazing things using a learning algrithm (算法) much
like the pigen," Wasserman says, "yet when peple talk abut assciative learning in humans and animals, it is discunted as inflexible and uncmplicated. "
      32. Which f the fllwing is a typical example f assciative learning ?
      A. Dlphins detect bstacles using sund waves.
      B. Chimpanzees use physical gesture strategies.
      C. A dg wags its tail when hearing its fd bwl.
      D. Emily figures ut math prblems with lgic.
      33. Hw did the pigens imprve their perfrmance in the test?
      A. By pecking the stimuli.B. By finding rule r lgic.
      C. By cmpeting with each ther.D. By making numerus attempts.
      34. What can we infer frm the last paragraph?
      A. AI and man use the same learning pattern.
      B. Assciative learning is underestimated.
      C. Peple think highly f declarative learning.
      D. Pigens finish tasks with AI algrithms.
      35. Which can be a suitable title f the text?
      A. Pigen's Learning Largely Extends High Tech.
      B. AI Adpts Pigens' Learning Apprach.
      C. Pigen's Peck Can Mirrr High Tech.
      D. AI Learning Experience Reshapes Cgnitin.

When peple wrk tgether t slve prblems, they feel mre capable and cnnected. 37 Hands - n activities, fr instance, like cleaning up natural areas, have been shwn t increase envirnmental awareness mre effectively than passive learning alne.
One gd example is the Clean Earth Challenge, designed t encurage peple t pick up litter and recrd what they cllect. The initiative quickly grew thrugh partnerships with majr envirnmental grups and ther cmpanies. 38 That's equal t keeping abut 1.2 millin punds f waste ut f waterways and ecsystems. Amng thse wh tk part, mst f them said they felt mre hpeful that they culd make a difference, and ver 90 percent felt prud t wrk there.
39 It aims t reach mre peple and create a culture f care. By ffering clear, achievable actins, it turns big envirnmental wrries int manageable tasks. Fr thse wh want t start a similar prject, patterns and ideas are available nline. This apprach is especially useful fr cmpanies wh want t invlve emplyees in real sustainability wrk.
In a wrld where many feel tired r anxius abut the planet, the lessn is clear: start small, act tgether, and fcus n what cunts. 40 Instead, it's abut changing habits, ne piece f litter at a time.

      B. Hw can they turn cncern int actin?
      C. In ther wrds, participatin really builds belief.
