Winning a remarkable science award is really a big deal, especially if yu are 12 years ld. But Shanya Gill, a middle schler frm San Jse, Califrnia, wn the tp award in the Therm Fisher Scientific Junir Innvatrs Challenge fr designing a fire detectin system that is superir t existing nes, as stated in the press release.
“The tp winners have exhibited bundless curisity,” Maya Ajmera, president and CEO f Sciety fr Science, said in the press release. “Their remarkable research nt nly reflects their talent but als paves the way fr an exciting new future.”
Shanya’s inspiratin came after a fire destryed a restaurant in her neighbrhd during the summer f 2022 reprted The Washingtn Pst. “I had never really experienced smething like that befre”, she tld The Washingtn Pst abut the early mrning fire at Hlder’s Cuntry Inn, which started in the kitchen. “They had smke detectrs, and yet it still burned dwn,” she added.
After she studied fire statistics, Shanya spent ver a year develping a fire detectin system that she believes culd have prevented the fire. Unlike traditinal smke detectrs that sense active fires frm the smke in the air, Shanya’s thermal (热的) imaging device is designed t stp fires frm ccurring.
With a thermal camera and a Raspberry Pi, a tiny cmputer, the device detects when a heat surce has been left unattended fr ten minutes and sends a text message warning. Creating the prttype (原型) was difficult and the hardest part was the prgramming. I had tw designs, and my first design cmpletely failed. “It was a really big challenge I had t g thrugh,” she said. The final device utperfrms smke detectrs in speed and accuracy. Shanya wants t bring the csts dwn t make it even mre cmmn than previus smke detectrs.
“Shanya saw a prblem, went after it and tried t slve it, and that’s what we need t encurage with all yung peple,” said Ajmera. She als highlighted the significance f supprting individuals, especially girls and kids f clr, in STEM fields, as research indicates that many yung peple drp ut f these areas.
      24. What can we learn abut Shanya frm the first tw paragraphs?
      A. She shwed her curius nature as a student.
      B. She created an imprtant platfrm fr her.

      C. Her interest in cmputer prgramming.
      D. Her aim t enhance STEM educatin fr girls.

      D. A Yung Innvatr in Fire Detecting
      C
One f my bad habits is saying “busy” when peple ask me hw I’m ding. Smetimes it’s because I actually am busy, but ther times it’s because that’s what I think I’m suppsed t say. That’s what imprtant peple say. That’s what peple wh get prmted say. But wrking lng hurs desn’t drive better results. Never taking a vacatin wn’t lead t a prmtin. S why are we s prud t talk abut hw busy we are all the time?
In 2016, researchers frm Clumbia, Harvard, and Gergetwn cnducted a study t figure it ut. They fund busy peple are perceived t be f high status, and interestingly, these status attributins are heavily influenced by ur wn beliefs abut scial mbility. In ther wrds, the mre we believe that ne has the pprtunity fr success based n hard wrk, the mre we tend t think that peple wh skip leisure and wrk all the time are f higher standing.
That’s why we feel like we have t appear busy, and there’s a real perceptin that if smene is knee-deep in meetings, emails, and stress, then they’re prbably a big deal. This culture f busyness is making it hard fr emplyees t find wrk-life balance. Accrding t a recent study, ne in five highly engaged emplyees is at risk f burnut.
Persnally, I’m ging t stp saying “busy” when peple ask me hw I am. It sunds self-righteus (自以为是的) and sets the wrng tne. Phrases like “I have limited access t email” and “I’ll respnd as sn as I get back” sund like yu’re being held against yur will frm wrking as ppsed t making the mst f yur time ff.
By rejecting the myth that business equals wrth, we free urselves and thers frm exhaustin. True success isn’t abut wrking harder; it’s abut wrking smarter and finding balance. Let’s redefine what it means t be prductive — and start valuing rest as much as effrt.
      28. Hw des the authr intrduce the tpic in the first paragraph?
      A. By quting famus peple.B. By presenting statistical data.
      C. By cmparing different pinins.D. By intrducing persnal experience.
      29. Why d we tend t think that busy peple are f high status?
      A. Our status can be attributed t ur scial mbility.
      B. We hld the belief that hard wrk leads t success.
      C. Our wn pprtunity fr success never cmes easily.
      D. We find few peple f high status have time fr leisure.
      30. What des the underlined phrase “knee-deep in” in Paragraph 3 prbably mean?
      A. Bred with.B. Wrried abut.
      C. Fully invlved in.D. Very interested in.
      31. What is the authr’s purpse in writing the passage?
      A. T advise emplyees n hw t achieve wrk-life balance.
      B. T share his persnal experience f vercming a bad habit.
      C. T intrduce a study n peple’s attitude twards busyness.
      D. T argue against the culture f equating busyness with wrth.
      D
Much has been discussed abut hw mdern lifestyles lead t insufficient sleep, unlike ur ancestrs wh lived in simpler times. Hwever, an analysis f 54 glbal sleep studies reveals that individuals in small, nn-industrial scieties actually sleep less than thse in mre industrialized regins.
“Everyne I speak t in Canada and the US cmplains abut pr sleep,” says Leela McKinnn frm the University f Trnt Mississauga. “But the data desn’t supprt that.” It is cmmnly believed that the rise f devices like smartphnes has resulted in reduced sleep. Yet, many studies reprting a decline in sleep duratin rely n self-reprted data, which is an unreliable measure.
Research using mre reliable methds, such as activity mnitrs r brainwave tracking, has nt indicated a decrease in sleep ver recent decades. Fr instance, a 2023 review f 168 studies fund n significant drp in sleep duratin ver the past 50 years. Hwever, these studies primarily fcused n industrialized natins, leaving the questin f whether sleep patterns were different befre industrializatin unanswered.
McKinnn and her clleague David Samsn, als frm the University f Trnt Mississauga, have participated in several relevant studies. They cmpared sleep habits in industrialized natins — like the US and Australia — with thse in smaller, nn-industrial cmmunities, including lcal grups in the Amazn, Madagascar, and Tanna Island in the Pacific. Their analysis, the mst cmprehensive t date, invlved direct measurements f sleep in 866 participants aged 18 and lder with n serius health issues. They discvered that individuals in nn-industrial scieties averaged 6.4 hurs f sleep, while thse in industrial scieties averaged 7.1 hurs. Additinally, peple in nn-industrial scieties were asleep fr 74% f their time in bed, cmpared t 88% in industrialized areas, a cncept knwn as sleep efficiency.
Samsn believes that peple in industrialized scieties sleep lnger and better because their envirnment is mre suitable fr sleep. “We see that we’ve made sme real gains in the safety and security f ur sleep sites.”
      32. What des Leela McKinnn think f sleep cmplaints?
      A. They are caused by smartphnes.B. They are supprted by data.
      C. They are unique t Canada.D. They are verstated by peple.
      33. Hw did the researchers cnduct their research n peple’s sleep habits?
      A. By cllecting sleep data f different age grups.
      B. By cmparing sleep cnditins f different scieties.
      C. By analyzing health prblems f sleep-deficient peple.
      D. By interviewing participants abut their sleep rutines.
      34. Why d peple in industrial scieties sleep better?
      A. They sleep less but feel better.B. Their sleep technlgy is advanced.
      C. They are mre used t shrt sleep.D. Their sleep envirnments are safer.
      35. What is the passage mainly abut?
      A. Nn-industrial scieties sleep better.
      B. Technlgy greatly reduces sleep time.
      C. Research challenges beliefs abut sleep.
      D. Industrializatin wrsens sleep quality.
      第二节(共5小题;每小题2.5分,满分12.5分)
      根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。
Is fashin imprtant t yu?____36____Frm thse wh wear trendy ripped jeans and lse-fitting T-shirts t thse wh wear smart tailred suits and expensive designer utfits, each individual can have their wn style.
____37____And what impact can this have n their self-expressin?
Arguably, ne factr that influences what peple wear is the need t impress thers. Peple wh dress well and keep up with the latest styles seem t be mre nticed than thse wh are nt cncerned abut their appearance. ____38____In this way they assume an identity which makes them feel they impress. Yet, by cpying general lks, peple actually can’t shw their individuality.
At the same time, fashin is perceived by sme as a tl fr success and ne that represents wealth r respectable scial psitin. Fr instance, peple intentinally try t raise their status by wearing famus brands r expensive clthes which are admired by thers.____39____They are just the means t prmte a specific image f pwer and cntrl. In this case, fashin des nt express persnal individuality but culd perhaps be said t give a false impressin f appearance fr a specific purpse.
That being said, fllwing fashin may nt have anything t d with cpying current trends but with using them as an inspiratin t create utfits expressing individuality.____40____Adding glam here and there, rlling up a pair f trusers r even wearing tw different shes can be cnsidered a frm f self-expressin demnstrating riginality.
Having cnsidered all this, t my way f thinking, fashin can be used as a means f cmmunicatin and a way t cmmunicate yur self-image t peple arund yu. As a famus designer nce said, “Fashin is instant language.”
      A. Is it a trend we must fllw?
      B. But why are peple fllwing fashin?
      C. Fr mst peple it is, at least t sme extent.
      D. Fr this reasn, peple wear fashinable clthing.
      E. These clthes are nt actually giving a persnal statement f the wearer.
      F. There are always fashin fllwers, even thugh fashin is cnstantly changing.
      G. An example f this is refrming fashinable pieces and making small persnalized changes.
