Frm that mment, she has wrked tirelessly t share her stry, and thse f s many thers, t bring greater visibility t the dangers they have faced.
Yusra will launch a fundatin t prvide refugees arund the glbe with access t educatin and sprt. She is als currently studying film and TV prductin in Ls Angeles. Swimming remains her crnerstne, the true cnstant in her life. “Swimming has taught me a lt: it taught me t try again. If yu’ re ging thrugh smething tugh, it desn’t mean that it is ver,” Yusra says.

We’ve all been there: in a lift, lking thrugh phnes t avid eye cntact; in a bank line, staring at the flr as silence stretches awkwardly; r n a plane, hlding devices like shields (屏障) frm the stranger next t us. It’s a cmmn mdern habit — but beneath this a vidance lies a prblem. Maybe we’ve lst sme ability t talk t thers: ur skill at starting chats has faded frm chsing phnes ver talking fr years. Mre likely, we just avid starting a chat — it feels awkward t break silence, hard t find wrds, r unnecessary when we can hide behind phnes. But next time yu’re arund strangers, pause: small talk is wrth the discmfrt. Experts call it a valuable scial habit that brings easy-t-miss benefits.
It’s easy t ignre small talk and regard it as smething unimprtant, but we frget:deep relatinships — rmantic, prfessinal, r friendly — wuld never start withut casual chats first. Small talk is like il fr scializing, says Bernard Carducci, head f Indiana University Sutheast’s Shyness Research Institute. “Nearly every great lve stry starts with a silly weather cmment in a cafe, and big business deals begin with casual pre-meeting chats abut trends,” he explains. “Gd small talk isn’t just exchanging wrds — it’s cnnecting, shwing real interest, nt just ging thrugh the mtins. Asking a barista (咖啡师) ‘Hw’s yur busiest shift?’ instead f ‘A latte, please.’ turns an rder int a tiny human link.”
In a study, UBC psychlgy teacher Elizabeth Dunn tested custmers at a lcal café. One grup talked t waiters — asking abut their day, cmmenting n new cakes, jking a-but lng lines. The ther nly spke when needed: just rdering and thanking. The results shwed that thse wh chatted with their server reprted significantly higher psitive feelings and a better cffee shp experience. “It’s nt that talking t the waiter is better than talking t yur husband,” say Dunn. “But interactins with peripheral (边缘) members f ur scial netwrk matter fr ur well-being als.”
Dunn thinks reaching ut t strangers can bst ur sense f belnging — a quiet bnd that eases lneliness. Carducci agrees: this cnnectin starts with small chats. “Small talk is gd manners’ base,” he says. “Nice day, isn’t it?” t a bus stp stranger, r “I lve yur necklace — where did yu get it?” t a cwrker, desn’t just fill silence. It builds respect, eases tensin, and reminds us we’re all just peple wanting a little cnnectin.”

Imagine staying in the icy wilderness f Antarctica, cut ff frm the rest f the wrld, with nly a small grup f scientists. Such a grup might be expected t develp a culture f its wn, but wuld that develp a new shared accent?
As part f the prject t explain the spken accent develpment, a grup f researchers led by Jnathan Harringtn, prfessr f phnetics and speech prcessing at the Ludwig-Maximilian University f Munich, started the study. The scientists were frm several cuntries, including the US, the UK, Iceland and Germany. As part f the study, they had t recrd themselves reading a list f vcabularies frm a cmputer screen every few weeks. The list included wrds with vwel (元音) sunds /i:/, /u:/ and / əʊ/ that have been fund t change ver time in different English accents.
The recrdings were then sent t researchers. When the recrdings were studied, the researchers fund that the prnunciatin f wrds with an /əʊ/ sund— such as “flw,”“cde” and “sew”— had changed a little ver the six mnths. The scientists began t prnunce it mre tward the frnt f their muths than tward the back. (British prnunciatins are already typically frnter than American /əʊ/.)

While nly small changes were recrded, the researchers believe the experiment helps t explain hw different accents are created amng enclsed (封闭的) cmmunities — and may help us knw why American and British English have develped as they have.

      C. Make sentences.D. Read and recrd wrds.
      29. Which wrd’s prnunciatin may change in the enclsed cmmunity in the study?
      A. shw.B. sheep.
      C. tube.D. adult.
      30. Which f the fllwing d the researchers agree with cncerning the finding?
      A. It prves life in Antarctica is difficult.

      C. It helps build cmmunicatins amng peple with different accents.
      D. It may explain American and British English’s develpment.

A nearby theater was shwing a dcumentary abut several lcal animal shelters that were helping t save abandned dgs acrss the cuntry. I lve animals and I felt an urge t g t this fundraising (募捐) event. Hwever, nne f my c-wrkers wuld g with me, and I was wrried abut walking n the street alne at night.
I ended up spending the evening in my htel rm, but as sn as I gt back t my rm I felt restless and bred. The theater where the event was taking place was nly abut five blcks frm the htel, and the area arund the htel didn’t seem particularly dangerus. S, I decided t g fr it. I gathered up my wallet and rm key and set ff.
It was already getting dark and the streets were almst empty. I managed t find the street the theater was n, but when I turned the crner, I stpped in shck. In frnt f the theater were a grup f bikers — clustered arund their heavy mtrcycles. They were all large men dressed in leather vests. One in particular, a muntain f a man with a thick beard and a scar abve his eyebrw, was laughing ludly at smething, his vice rugh and eching in the quiet street.
I’ ve knwn lts f mtrcycle enthusiasts and mst are nice peple. Hwever, in this case, I was a wman all alne, in a strange neighbrhd, at night, and this rugh-lking crwd — all wearing insignia (徽章) that indicated they were in sme srt f club — standing befre me. Warning bells began t sund in my head, and my heart was punding. Was I at the right theater? Had I misread the date f the event?
A sign utside the theater tld me that I was in the right place n the right evening. Nevertheless, I wndered if I shuld rush back t my htel instead f walking thrugh that crwd f bikers. The thught f squeezing past them, f drawing their attentin, made my palms sweat. I finally decided that I wuld be safer inside the theater. Hpefully, the bikers wuld have gne away by the time the film was ver.
