Mst adults’ earliest memries date back t preschl, nt infancy (婴儿). The gap in ur autbigraphy frm when we were a baby is knwn as “infantile amnesia”, and it is nt just due t nrmal frgetting ver time.
Tw pssible accunts exist fr this phenmenn. First, infants may nt be able t stre memries. The hippcampus — a brain regin key fr memry — grws slwly in childhd. It may nt wrk well enugh fr infants t keep memries, similar t adults with hippcampal damage wh cannt stre new memries. Anther idea is that infants can stre memries but lse access t them later. Studies n mice shw their hippcampus stres early memries and keeps them int adulthd.
T test this in humans, ur lab used fMRI (a safe brain imaging tl) t study awake infants — smething nt dne befre. Given infants’ high activity level and shrt attentin time, bth f which make it difficult t cllect gd data frm them. As a result, mst fMRI research in infants has been cnducted while they sleep. But this wasn’t an ptin fr ur investigatins because memries are based n experiences in waking life. Thrugh mre than 400 sessins and cuntless insights frm families, we develped specialized techniques t keep awake infants still, happy, and engaged.
In a recent study, we shwed 1-year-ld infants phts f faces, bjects and scenes during fMRI. Later, we gave them each familiar pht with a new ne. If an infant lked lnger at the familiar ne, we knew they remembered it. We then checked brain data: the hippcampus was mre active when infants viewed phts they later remembered. This prves the infant hippcampus can create shrt-term memries after a brief lk, especially in 12- mnth-lds.
Our findings supprt the “lst access” idea, but questins remain: Hw lng d these memries last? Can infants remember cmplex events? Why d mst earliest memries start at age 4-5 if memries frm at 1? Answering these will help understand language learning, develpmental disrders, parenting and even memry lss in aging r Alzheimer’s disease.
12. What is the primary fcus f the secnd paragraph?
A. Muse brain develpment prcesses.
B. Explanatins abut infantile amnesia.
C. Experimental methds t study memry.
D. Effects f hippcampal damage in adults.
13. Why is studying awake infants imprtant fr memry research using fMRI?
A. Family invlvement became unnecessary.
B. Data cllectin speed increased significantly.
C. Sleep studies cannt detect any infant memry.
D. It allws studying memries frmed during wakefulness.
14. What key finding shwed 12-mnth-lds frm shrt-term memries?
A. Their brain activity was like adults’.
B. They remained calm during brain scans.
C. They lked lnger at new phts than familiar nes.
D. Their hippcampus was mre active fr remembered phts.
15. In which sectin f a magazine can we read the text?
A. Educatin.B. Science.
C. Culture.D. Health.

根据第二段“Tw pssible accunts exist fr this phenmenn. First, infants may nt be able t stre memries. The hippcampus — a brain regin key fr memry — grws slwly in childhd. It may nt wrk well enugh fr infants t keep memries, similar t adults with hippcampal damage wh cannt stre new memries. Anther idea is that infants can stre memries but lse access t them later.(对于这一现象,存在两种可能的解释。其一,婴儿可能无法存储记忆。海马体——大脑中对记忆至关重要的一个区域——在儿童时期发育缓慢。对婴儿来说,它可能无法良好运作以留存记忆,这与海马体受损、无法存储新记忆的成年人情况类似。另一种观点是,婴儿能够存储记忆,但随后却无法提取这些记忆)”可知,该段主要聚焦于对婴儿期健忘症现象的解释。故选B项。
【13题详解】
细节理解题。根据第三段“But this wasn’t an ptin fr ur investigatins because memries are based n experiences in waking life.(但这(在婴儿睡觉时进行研究)不是我们研究的选择,因为记忆是基于清醒时的生活经历)”可知,使用fMRI研究清醒的婴儿对记忆研究很重要,是因为这样能够研究在清醒状态下形成的记忆。
根据第四段“We then checked brain data: the hippcampus was mre active when infants viewed phts they later remembered. This prves the infant hippcampus can create shrt-term memries after a brief lk, especially in 12-mnth-lds.(然后我们检查大脑数据:当婴儿看到他们后来记住的照片时,海马体更加活跃。这证明婴儿的海马体在短暂观看后能够形成短期记忆,尤其是12个月大的婴儿)”可知,12个月大的婴儿对记住的照片海马体更活跃,这一关键发现表明他们能形成短期记忆。故选D项。
【15题详解】
推理判断题。通读全文,尤其根据第一段“Mst adults’ earliest memries date back t preschl, nt infancy (婴儿). The gap in ur autbigraphy frm when we were a baby is knwn as “infantile amnesia”, and it is nt just due t nrmal frgetting ver time.(大多数成年人最早的记忆都能追溯到学龄前,而非婴儿时期。我们的人生记忆中这段婴儿阶段的空白被称为“婴儿期健忘症”,且这一现象并非单纯由随时间推移的正常遗忘造成。)”可知,本文围绕婴儿期健忘症展开,介绍了相关研究背景、实验方法和研究发现,属于科学研究范畴,最可能出现在杂志的科学板块。故选B项。
