Maybe they d it because they try t fllw track & field athletics and almst any ther kind f race where the running directin is always cunterclckwise, r maybe is there any ther reasn? I have been asking many peple and “researching” nline. The best answers I fund are frm the research f a cnstructin prfessr at Waseda University.
Prfessr Watanabe Hitshi spent many years researching the best way t design stairs and emergency exits. He reached a pint in his research where he had t decide if it was better t design stairs that yu have t g dwn clckwise r cunterclckwise. Experiments had been carried ut sme time befre, and it was knwn that there is a tendency (趋势) t turn cunterclckwise. But Mr. Watanabe wanted t lk int mre s he further researched n it:
·Mst human beings are right-handed.
·Mst f the left-handed peple are right-fted, while mst f the right-handed peple are als right-fted.
·Mst human beings have a bit lnger right leg than their left leg.
These three factrs make ur right leg becme strnger than the left leg, which causes a tendency t turn t the left, and t be able t run faster in a cunterclckwise directin.
Mr. Watanabe carried ut a lt f experiments and bservatins t get sme results. Fr example, he fund ut thrugh an experiment that when peple are being fllwed and trying t escape (逃跑), they turn t the left uncnsciusly 70% f the time.

A. T design better running tracks.
B. T study abut right-handed peple.
C. T find ut the reasns behind the tendency.
D. T shw the imprtance f emergency exits.
10. What des Watanabe’s experiment shw?
A. Left-handed peple run faster.
B. Lnger legs mean faster speed.
C. Peple chse left turns when tired.
D. Mst peple escape by turning left.
11 What des the text mainly talk abut?
A. The best way t design stairs.
B. The science behind running directin.

Screens are increasingly taking ver mre and mre f ur life, leading sme researchers t wrry abut the effect f lng-term use n lder adults’ brain. It has been suggested that this might lead t s-called digital dementia — that depending n digital technlgy thrughut ur life might harm ur cgnitive functin (认知功能) in ur later years.
But new research shws this wrry desn’t appear t be true, at least fr the generatin f adults wh first usually used smartphnes, cmputers and the Internet — and wh are nw reaching the age when cgnitive impairment (障碍) ften starts t appear.
In a paper published n Mnday in Nature Human Behaviur, Scullin and his c-authr Jared Benge, a neurpsychlgist at the University f Texas at Austin, examined 57 studies f digital technlgy use and cgnitive functin in mre than 400,000 lder adults acrss the wrld. They fund that peple in the “digital pineer” generatin wh made mre use f digital technlgy did nt have higher rates f cgnitive impairment. In fact, technlgy use was related t lwer rates f cgnitive decline. Yet the nature f the relatinship between these factrs remains unclear.
“I was nt especially surprised by the results,” says neurscientist Sam Gilbert f University Cllege Lndn, wh was nt part f the study. “This study prvides a challenge t the widespread fears abut ‘digital dementia’ and highlights the pssibility f technlgy as a tl fr cgnitive imprvement,” says Chiara Scarampi, a neurscientist at the University f Geneva, wh als was nt part f the study.
“‘Digital dementia’ has always felt like a catchy but verstated idea t me,” she adds. “Cgnitive fflading — using tls like reminders r GPS — is nt harmful. In fact, it can free up cgnitive resurces fr mre ther tasks.”
12. What can we infer abut digital dementia?
A. It can be treated easily.B. It will d harm t ur brain.
