Heman's family came t the US frm Ethipia when he was fur. Heman remembers seeing peple there wrking utside in the sun withut prper sun prtectin, which may well increase the risk f skin cancer. Frm his parents, he had a deeper understanding f its dangers. Skin cancer can ften be cured, but the treatment is extremely expensive fr thse pr wrkers.
Heman's natural curisity led him t experiment with different materials and at the age f 7, he nearly caused a fire with a chemistry set. As he gt lder, he began t wnder if his curisity culd actually help make a difference. Upn reading abut imiquimd, a medicine that can fight early-stage skin cancer, he realized it was a gd way t make the medicine wrk thrugh a simple bar f sap.
But Heman knew that simply mixing imiquimd (咪喹莫特) with sap wuldn't wrk, as it wuld just wash away. Instead, he thught f creating a sap that cntained the medicine inside super tiny "nanparticles" (纳米颗粒) t make sure it remains n the skin after the sap washed ff, allwing imiquimd t take effect.
Last year, when he was 14, Heman created a vide explaining his idea, and wn the 3M Yung Scientist Challenge. He is nw wrking with scientists at Jhns Hpkins University, running tests t see if the sap helps mice with skin cancer.
Heman knws that it will take a lng time and a lt f effrt t develp his sap, but he's excited abut the wrk. He als encurages ther yung peple t cntribute. "Just keep inventing and thinking f new ways t imprve ur wrld and make it a better place," Heman says.

What's yur pinin n spicy(辛辣的) fd? Sme peple cannt handle even the smallest amunt f chili peppers in their dinner while thers can't get enugh f them.
Scientists have lng been puzzled by why sme peple lve the chili while thers lathe it. Plenty f research has been dne n the subject, dating as far back as the 1970s. Previus results shwed that a lve f chilies is related t childhd experiences, and that cultural influences affect ur taste t. But the latest study has fund that a persn's lve f spicy fd may be linked t his r her persnality mre than anything else, CBC News reprted.
"We have always assumed that liking cntributes t intake —— we eat what we are fnd f and we like what we cnsume. But n ne has actually directly bthered t relate persnality t intake f chili peppers," said Prfessr Jhn E. Hayes frm Pennsylvania State University, wh led the study.
But befre yu lk at the study, yu shuld first knw that "spicy" is nt a taste, unlike sur, sweet, bitter and salty taste. It is, in fact, a burning feeling that yu feel n the surface f yur tngue. This gt scientists thinking that maybe a lve f spicy fd is brught abut by peple's lnging fr thrill, smething they usually get frm watching actin mvies r riding a rller caster.
In the study, 97 subjects, bth male and female, were asked t fill ut questinnaires abut their persnality, fr example, whether they are keen n new experiences r tend t avid risks. They were then given a glass f water with capsaicin(辣椒素), the plant chemical that makes a chili burn, mixed int it.
By cmparing the answers t the questinnaire and what participants said they felt abut the spicy water, researchers fund that thse wh tended t enjy actin mvies r take risks were abut six times mre likely t enjy the spicy water.
Interestingly, we used t believe that the reasn why sme peple can stand spicy fd is that their tngues have becme less sensitive t it. Hwever, this latest study has fund therwise. "It's nt that it desn't burn as badly, but that yu actually learn t like the burning feeling," Hayes explained.
28. Which can take the place f the underlined wrd "lathe" in Paragraph 2?
A. dislike.B. seek.C. accept.D. harvest.
29. What did Prfessr Jhn E. Hayes and his team discver frm their study?
A. What we eat actually helps develp ur persnality.
B. Males prefer spicy fd than females.
C. Thse aviding risks tend t hate spicy fd.
D. It's wrng t treat "spicy" as a feeling.
30. Why d sme peple like spicy fd accrding t the recent study?
A. Because their tngues have becme less sensitive.
B. Because they are lacking in appetite.
C. Because they want t challenge themselves.
D. Because they lve the burning feeling.
31. What's the main idea f the passage?
A. What t eat mainly depends n persnality.
B. Preference fr spicy fd relies largely n persnality.
C. Taste has nthing t with ne's experiences.
D. Different peple have different taste.

In late September, an internatinal team f researchers spread ut acrss a remte New Mexic muntain range in search f a plant. The grup walked thrugh the rugh landscape lking fr signs f plants hugging a tree. Seven days later, the scientists left with a sample f nature's reward: wild bean plants.
The scientists wanted t cllect the legume (豆科植物), which is native t dry regins f the suthwestern US and nrthwestern Mexic. "The plants have adapted t this very ht and dry climate, s they have exceptinal drught and heat tlerance, " said Sarah Dhle, an expert f the US Department f Agriculture.
A warming planet is causing huge damage t agriculture arund the glbe. In the western US, a severe drught affected Califrnia's tmat and rice prductin. In Guatemala, the cmbined effects f bth drught and rain decreased crn and black bean harvests. In Sub - Saharan Africa, ht cnditins have reduced the yields f wheat and crn by mre than a third since the early 1960s.
“Crps like the wild bean culd help diversify fd prductin, and their genetic material may help make ther crps mre drught- and heat-tlerant,” said Richard Pratt, wh is amng a grwing number f scientists wrking t lk fr crps adapting t climate change.
The University f Califrnia is leading a multi - state $15 millin prject invlving 20 institutins t speed up the breeding cycles f wheat and t research ways t help the crp grw in a tughened envirnment. At Auburn University in Alabama, scientists are wrking t breed a peanut variety that can better tlerate drught cnditins. And scientists frm varius institutins have taken part in an effrt funded by the Nrwegian gvernment t identify, cllect and evaluate wild crps fr future develpment.
Still, there are numerus challenges at play: Crp breeding is a time - intensive prcess, s it can be difficult fr scientists t keep pace with rapidly changing weather. Advances in gene editing can help speed up the prcess, but cme with their wn trials.
“As glbal climate change keeps being hard n us,” Sarah Dhle said, “there isn't plenty f time left fr us t get crps that are adaptable.”
32. What is the purpse f the Paragraph 1?
A. Sharing an inspiratinal stry.
B. Leading in the tpic f the text.
C. Prviding backgrund infrmatin.
D. Summarising the main idea f the text.

C. By making cmparisns.D. By listing predictin data.
34. What des Sarah Dhle imply in the last paragraph?
A. Climate change is cntrllable.
B. Crp breeding(培育) is time - cnsuming.
C. Effrts t plant crps prve fruitless.
D. Immediate actin shuld be taken.
35. What is the best title fr the text?
