It was 3 a.m. when my phne buzzed (嗡嗡声) repeatedly, disturbing my baby wh had just fallen asleep after an hur f rcking. It was a WhatsApp message frm a mm friend. The screen lit up with a fld f messages — fellw mms discussing sleeping training, arranging playdates, and sharing Instagram psts abut mtherhd. Their cheerful “We can d this, mamas!” nly increased my tiredness. The blue light frm my phne screen left me wide awake with a racing heart.
It’s in this mment that I made my change, sliding my finger dwn frm the tp right-hand crner f my phne t access the cntrl centre, hitting wildly at the little mn pattern that stps ntificatins (通知) in their tracks, and hanging up my virtual dr sign: D Nt Disturb.
That was three years ag. Since then, I’ve seldm turned ntificatins back n, except when waiting fr imprtant calls. I d nt want t be disturbed; nr, actually, d I want my phne t demand as much f my attentin as my nw tddler (学步儿童) r his new baby brther des. Sure, I’m nt easily reachable, which upsets my partner, but I’m calmer nt being always there fr the wrld and thse WhatsApp-mad mms.
I still wrk n my self-cntrl t avid checking my phne all the time fr fear f missing ut. The pull f unread messages is strng, but in general, the benefit t my mental health, sleep, and parenting is bvius. My phne is still a big part f my life, but it n lnger disturbs my daily life as much as befre.
I believe this change has made me a better and mre caring mther. There are, after all, few things that seek quite as much attentin as tddlers and WhatsApp grups. Given the chice, I’d rather fcus n my three-year-ld trying t climb curtains, put the dg in the washing machine, r feed his baby brther a stick f chalk than n a phne buzzing with ntificatins pretending t be urgent.

Sme fds are highly prcessed r ultra-prcessed. Ultra-prcessed fds (UPF) have becme increasingly ppular and range frm chips t micrwave meals and even bread. Even just a casual glance at supermarket shelves reveals a cllectin f UPF fferings in delicate and attractive packaging. Besides their affrdability, UPF nt nly ffer time-saving cnvenience, but als mmentary satisfactin filled with fat, sugar, salt and additives. After all, wh can resist enjying a tasty snack when lst in a ftball game r an exciting new TV series?
Althugh much is discussed abut the direct negative impact f these prducts n ur health, including besity, heart diseases and diabetes, little has been said abut the impacts f UPF n the envirnment. The mst serius envirnmental impacts f UPF-rich diets mainly cme frm the pst-farm stages, especially frm the final prduct creatin and packaging prcesses.
One specific additive that has the mst envirnmental impact is palm il. Palm il is respnsible fr defrestatin f sme f the wrld’s big frests, which have diverse animals and plants. It is ne f the wrld’s mst cnsumed vegetable ils that can be fund in half f ur fd. The massive waste generated by ver-packaged UPF is anther factr t cnsider. Their plastic packaging desn't degrade in landfills r in nature and has a dramatic impact n sil health and life in the sea. One recent study published in Nature Sustainability demnstrates that UPF prcessing and packaging stages have the greatest envirnmental impacts f the whle system and are a majr surce f envirnmental waste wrldwide.
The envirnmental impact f ultra-prcessed fds cannt be ignred any lnger. While prducers must take actin, it is ur grwing awareness f what we buy and hw it is prduced that drives real change. By chsing wisely — whether by rejecting heavily prcessed ptins r supprting sustainable brands — we exercise the pwer t shape a better fd system, a respnsibility we must embrace.

B. T explain UPF's harmful envirnmental effects.
C. T shw its relatinship with animals and plants.
D. T discuss factrs f UPF's packaging-related pllutin.
10. What des the authr think f the rle we play in fighting UPF?
A. Tiny.B. Essential.C. Replaceable.D. Limited.
11. Which f the fllwing can be a suitable title fr the text?

Language is embedded (嵌入) in almst every aspect f the way we interact with the wrld. It’s hard t imagine what it wuld be like nt t have it. What wuld be the result if we didn’t have names fr things r didn’t have experience talking abut things that hadn’t actually happened? Wuld we be able t think? What wuld ur thughts be like?
The answer t the questin f whether thught is pssible withut language depends n what yu mean by “thught”. Can yu experience impressins and feelings withut language? Yes, and very few wuld argue therwise. But there is a difference between being able t experience “pain” and pssessing the cncept “pain”. Mst wuld say true thught invlves having the cncept.
Many artists and scientists say they d nt use wrds t slve prblems, but images. The autistic (自闭症的) authr Temple Grandin, in explaining hw she thinks with images rather than in language, says that cncepts fr her are cllectins f images.
Of curse, Grandin has language, and knws hw t use it, s it is hard t say hw much f her thinking has been influenced by it, but that there are peple wh are deficient in the ability t use language and think in the way she describes.
There is evidence that deaf peple cut ff frm language pssess the ability t think befre being expsed t language. Als, the sign languages develped by deaf students withut language mdels display the kind f thinking that ges far beynd mere sensry impressin r practical prblem slving.
Hwever, while it appears that we can indeed think withut language, there are certain kinds f thinking that are made pssible by language. Language gives us symbls we can use t fix ideas, reflect n them, and hld them up fr bservatin. It allws fr a level f abstract reasning we wuldn’t have therwise. The philspher Peter Carruthers has argued that there is a type f inner language thinking that allws us t bring ur wn thughts int awareness. We may be able t think withut language, but language lets us knw we are thinking.
12. What des the authr intend t shw with the experience f Temple Grandin?
A. Peple withut language can’t think.
B. Language has n influence n thinking.
C. Sme peple may think in a nn-language way.
D. Autistic peple have a special way f using language.
13. Which f the fllwing best explains “deficient” underlined in paragraph 4?
A. Flexible. B. Lacking.C. Cnfident.D. Experienced.
14. What culd we learn frm the last paragraph?
A. Language makes abstract reasning easier.
B. Language is merely useful fr reflectin.
C. Language is a must fr peple t understand the wrld.
D. Language restricts peple s ability t think visually.
15. The text is written mainly t __________.
A. Stress the imprtance f language in daily life.
B. Advcate the thinking mdes f scientists and artists
C. Demnstrate the cgnitive abilities f average individuals.
D. Shw the relatinship between thught and language.
