Destructive earthquakes rck the wrld frm time t time. Nthing can be dne t prevent them frm striking. The best way t ease these future disasters is t draw maps f the underwrld, recrding every fault (断层) and tracking its behavir.
T create thse maps, researchers emply machines that sense and recrd all srts f vibratins (震动). This wrk, histrically, has smetimes been inaccurate. When Zachary Rss, an assistant gephysics prfessr, started in the field in the early 2010s, he tried t find a new way frward. “Even the best cmputer prgrams at the time missed certain earthquakes. There had t be a better way,” he says. He made the study in Califrnia which is s gelgically active and there were mre data than human experts alne culd reasnably handle.
In 2017 Rss started t fcus n tiny quakes. They might be harmless, but that desn’t make them unimprtant — their waves can explain each fault they pass thrugh, including the mre precarius, stressladed nes that may ne day crack and set ff a disaster. Rss and his clleagues set an algrithm (算法) upn the seismic (地震的) recrd. The algrithm quickly identified nearly tw millin previusly hidden tiny quakes.
Hwever, his prgram culd nly find earthquakes in the seismic recrd that it was taught t recgnize. S Rss turned t mre advanced tls: selflearning prgrams, sftware that culd make predictins abut the future — in this case, what a greatly wider variety f earthquakes might sund like. Very quickly, these prgrams fund all srts f unfamiliar-sunding quakes — later cnfirmed by human scientists.
These AI learning prgrams can als be used t imprve the speed and accuracy (精确度) f earthquake earlywarning systems — largely autnmus (自主的) prgrams that frecast threats t life and prperty in the mments after an earthquake starts and send peple emergency text messages befre seismic waves reach them. But fr all their prmise, AI prgrams wn’t replace human scientists. “They’re just tls,” Rss says — nes that in time, he believes, will becme as rdinary as seismmeters (地震仪) themselves.
24.What inspired Rss t carry ut the new study?
A.The massive amunts f data available.
B.The gegraphical lcatin f Califrnia.
C.The limitatin f the traditinal methd.
D.The breakdwn f the cmputer prgrams.

A.They frecast new earthquakes.
B.They help restre hidden faults.
C.They rely n previus infrmatin.
D.They use the best cmputer prgrams.
27.What d we knw abut the AI prgrams frm the last paragraph?
A.They will replace seismmeters.
B.They serve as an efficiency bster.
C.They reduce the threats t life and prperty.

Befre 2021, the typically cl Pacific Nrthwest and western Canada seemed highly unlikely t get a killer heat wave, but they did. Many in Nrth Carlina figured that hurricanes were a castal prblem until Helene blew in last year. After the deadly fld in central Texas in 1987, sme thught they culd handle the wrst flding in the future. Then came this mnth’s terrible flash fld that killed mre than 179 peple.
Climate change is making extreme weather events mre frequent and intense, accrding t climate data. But experts warn that peple and gvernments are generally living in the past and haven’t accepted that extreme weather is becming a new nrm
“There’s plenty f evidence that we start t experience things that just basically never happened befre,” Princetn University climate scientist Michael Oppenheimer said" Unfrtunately, when these risks are cming right at us like a fast-mving train, we just stand in the tracks. Then, all f a sudden, ‘Bm’”
“Time and again after catastrphic strms and wildfires, peple whse lives were runed said they didn’t think they culd happen t them again. It’s srt f a psychlgical mechanism (心理机制) t prtect themselves frm the terrible stress caused by thse disasters But with extreme weather events happening mre frequently and in mre places, this mindset can prevent them frm making prper preparatins,” said Kim Klckw McClain, an extreme weather scial scientist at the University Crpratin fr Atmspheric Research wh studies cmmunicating disaster warnings and risk. “The message needs t be, ‘If yu’ re used t sme degree f flding, lk at what happened in Texas and realize that this is a shifting baseline.’”
As fr future disasters, the cuntry needs t figure ut and plan fr the wrst case instead f lking t the past. It’s bvius that we’ re living int a future where what used t be extreme becmes average, typical, and what used t never ccur in a human lifetime r maybe even in a thusand years becmes the new extreme.
28.What message des the authr want t cnvey in the first tw paragraphs?

C.They make great effrts t be ready fr them.D.They tend t cperate with the gvernments.
31.What des the authr call n the gvernments and peple t d?
A.Learn frm the pastB.Get prepared fr the wrst.
C.Mve t safer places.D.Give in t the extreme climate.

Language allws us t describe actins, qualities, and relatinships in bth real and imagined experiences. A key questin in linguistics is hw languages develped. Recent research suggests that icnicity — the cnnectin between frm and meaning — may have played a crucial rle in the 41 .
Peple can’t vercme language barriers and understand each ther withut icnicity. We ften use ur hands and bdies, 42 , t act ut meanings, shwing the sizes and shapes f bjects. The key t frming new symbls is the use f icnicity.
Nt limited t 43 , icnicity appears in visual cmmunicatin t. Traffic signs, fd packaging, and maps all use icnicity t make infrmatin easy t understand, regardless f the 44 .
Icnicity als exists in 45 . T explre this, researchers rganized a cntest where participants recrded sunds t express different meanings. These sunds culd nt cntain actual wrds r 46 expressins like “BOOM” fr an explsin. Listeners then tried t match the sunds t a set f written ptins, and the cntestant whse sunds were mst accurately 47 wn the cntest.
The results were surprising — listeners successfully identified the intended 48 f the sunds. Yet, all the cntestants and listeners were English speakers. Thus, it was pssible that listeners’ success relied n 49 cultural knwledge.
T test if this phenmenn existed acrss 50 , researchers cnducted a brader Internet survey, translating the experiment int 25 languages. Participants frm different linguistic backgrunds listened t the sunds and 51 their meanings frm six written ptins.
The findings shwed 52 accuracy levels acrss different language grups. English speakers had the highest accuracy rate at 74%, while Prtuguese speakers scred 34%. Thugh far frm perfect, these results were much higher than the expected chance rate f 8%.
These studies shw that ur capacity fr icnic cmmunicatin has played a fundamental rle in language 53 . Icnicity enables individuals t express meanings in ways that are nt 54 dependent n specific linguistic knwledge. Withut this 55 , language may never have develped int the cmplex system we have tday.
