At the mment, Sng is wrking n restring a cpy f Yngle Dadian, an encyclpedia created in 1408 in the Ming Dynasty. Accepting the challenge, Sng and her clleagues spent six mnths researching and deciding n hw t repair the bks. “Mst bks frm Yngle Dadian have suffered damage t their riginal binding,” Sng said. “T restre them t their riginal frm, we need t gather infrmatin frm varius surces,” she explained.
In the past, restrers had t rely n their experience t chse the suitable materials t use. As technlgy has imprved, they can use a new methd thrugh micrscpes. Hwever, technlgy can nly help s much, as restratin still needs necessary hand-n skills, including cutting and brushing paper and binding. The restratin als requires strng cntrl when brushing the paper. “If the pressure is nt cntrlled well during the brushing prcess, the paper may tear, but if the tuch is t light, the paper wn’t stay,” Sng explained. Because f the tugh and cmplex prcess, the ancient bks restratin technique f the natinal library was listed as a natinal-level intangible cultural heritage in 2008.

As Mathias describes, they had 22 German-speaking adults learn a ttal f 90 invented wrds ver fur days. While the test subjects first heard the new vcabulary, they were shwn a vide f a persn making a gesture that matched the meaning f the wrd. When the wrd was repeated, the subjects perfrmed the gesture themselves. Five mnths later, they were asked t translate the vcabulary they had learned int German. At the same time, they had equipment attached t their heads that sent weak distracting signals t their primary mtr crtex(运动皮层) — the brain area that cntrls vluntary arm mvements. After tw mnths, the tw methds were still equally effective. But after six mnths, the adults benefited mre frm the gestures than the pictures, while the children were helped equally by bth.

The meaning expressed by the gesture als figures in, “I think we underuse gesture in ur classrms,” Gldin-Meadw says. “Gd teachers and gd listeners use it, but nt always in a systematic way.
