He learned nt nly the skills[图片] but als the patience and respect fr the material. Fr Jhn, restratin was far mre than simple repair; it was a prcess f uncvering histry. Each piece f furniture, with its unique scratches and wear, tld a stry f past times. He felt a sense f respnsibility t preserve these stries fr the future.
After finishing his training, Jhn started his wn wrkshp. His days are nw spent bringing damaged and aging furniture back t its frmer glry. The wrk is challenging, requiring careful analysis and a steady hand. Hwever, the greatest reward cmes frm the emtinal cnnectin he builds with his clients. Often, they bring items f great emtinal value — a grandmther’s favrite chair r a table arund which a family has gathered fr decades. Seeing their jyful reactins upn seeing a cherished piece restred is, fr Jhn, the mst satisfying part f his jb.
Lking back, Jhn feels he has fund his true calling. He has built a meaningful career by ding the wrk he truly lves, cmbining his hands - n skill with a deep appreciatin fr histry and family memries. Sugary drinks, already linked t besity, type 2 diabetes, and heart disease, may als fuel the spread f advanced clrectal cancer(直肠癌), accrding t new research frm the University f Texas MD Andersn Cancer Center. The study fund that the specific glucse - fructse mixture (葡萄糖 - 果糖混合物)cmmn in mst sugary drinks directly prmtes metastasis(转移)—the spread f cancer cells t ther parts f the bdy, which is the leading cause f death in clrectal cancer patients.
"T fully understand the danger, we needed t see whether they can make existing cancers mre aggressive, nt just increase initial cancer risk," explained Dr. Jihye Yun, lead authr f the study. The research cmpared the effects f cmbined glucse - fructse t either sugar alne using preclinical mdels. Only the mixture made cancer cells mre mbile, accelerating their spread t the liver—the mst cmmn site fr clrectal cancer spread.
The mechanism invlves the activatin f an enzyme(酶)called srbitl dehydrgenase (SORD) by the sugar blend. SORD bsts glucse metablism and triggers a chlesterl (胆固醇)pathway that ultimately drives metastasis. Ntably, this is the same pathway targeted by chlesterl - lwering statin drugs(他汀类药物). Blcking SORD slwed cancer spread even in the presence f the sugar mix, suggesting a ptential therapeutic target.
The study bradens the definitin f sugary drinks beynd sdas t include energy drinks, sweetened cffees, nutritinal supplements, and fruit juices. This is significant given that ver half f U.S. adults and nearly tw - thirds f yuth cnsume such sugary drinks daily—a trend paralleling a cncerning rise in early - nset clrectal cancer.
While the findings are frm labratry mdels and require human trials fr cnfirmatin, they ffer a crucial insight: dietary changes, even after tumr frmatin, may slw disease prgressin. Alngside reducing sugary drink intake, targeting the SORD pathway culd ffer pprtunities t reduce clrectal cancer spread and imprve utcmes fr patients with advanced clrectal cancer.
28. What is the main purpse f the research mentined in the passage?
A. T prve that sugary drinks cause clrectal cancer
B. T cmpare the effects f glucse and fructse n human health
C. T investigate hw sugary drinks might accelerate cancer spread in advanced cases
D. T develp new drugs fr treating early - stage clrectal cancer
29. Accrding t the passage, what makes the glucse - fructse mix particularly significant?
A. It is the nly sugar cmbinatin that causes besity
B. It alne made cancer cells mre mbile and likely t spread
C. It is rarely fund in cmmn sugary drinks
D. It has n effect n chlesterl levels
30. What ptential treatment apprach is suggested by the discvery abut SORD?
A. Develping drugs that blck this enzyme t slw cancer spread
B. Increasing statin dsage fr all cancer patients
C. Eliminating all chlesterl frm patients' diets
D. Using sugary drinks t activate the enzyme mre effectively
31. What des Dr. Yun emphasize abut the definitin f "sugary drinks"?
A. It shuld be limited t traditinal sft drinks
B. It excludes drinks given t cancer patients
C. It includes a wider range f drinks than peple might realize
D. It nly refers t drinks cntaining artificial sweeteners

Last spring, Shiri Melumad, a prfessr at the Whartn Schl f the University f Pennsylvania, gave a grup f 250 peple a simple writing assignment: Share advice with a friend n hw t lead a healthier lifestyle. T cme up with tips, sme were allwed t use a traditinal Ggle search, while thers culd rely nly n summaries f infrmatin generated autmatically with Ggle's artificial intelligence.
The peple using AI - generated summaries wrte advice that was generic, bvius and largely unhelpful --- eat healthy fds, stay hydrated and get lts f sleep! The peple wh fund infrmatin with a traditinal Ggle web search shared mre subtle advice abut fcusing n the varius pillars f wellness, including physical, mental and emtinal health.
The tech industry tells us that chatbts and new AI search tls will supercharge the way we learn and thrive, and that anyne wh ignres the technlgy risks being left behind. But Dr. Melumad's experiment, like ther academic studies published s far n AI's effects n the brain, fund that peple wh rely heavily n chatbts and AI search tls fr tasks like writing essays and research are generally perfrming wrse than peple wh dn't use them.
Welcme t the era f "brain rt," the slang term t describe a deterirated mental state frm engaging with lw - quality internet cntent. When we write with ChatGPT, are we even writing?
The mst high - prfile study this year abut AI's effects n the brain came ut f the Massachusetts Institute f Technlgy, where researchers sught t understand hw tls like OpenAI's ChatGPT culd affect hw peple
write. The study, which invlved 54 cllege students, had a small sample size, but the results raised imprtant questins abut whether AI culd suppress peple's abilities t learn.
Fr part f the study, students were asked t write an essay ranging frm 500 t 1,000 wrds, and they were divided int different grups: One grup culd write with the help f ChatGPT, a secnd grup culd lk up infrmatin nly with a traditinal Ggle search, and a third grup culd rely nly n their brains t cmpse their assignment. The students wre sensrs that measured electrical activity in their brains. The ChatGPT users shwed the lwest brain activity, which was unsurprising since they were letting the AI chatbt d the wrk.
But the mst striking revelatin arse after the students finished the writing exercise. One minute after cmpleting their essays, the students were asked t qute any part f their essay. The vast majrity f ChatGPT users (83 percent) culd nt recall a single sentence. In cntrast, the students using Ggle's search engine culd qute sme parts, and the students wh relied n n tech culd recite lts f lines, with sme even quting almst the entirety f their essays literally.
"It has been ne minute, and yu really cannt say anything?" said Nataliya Ksmyna, the research scientist at MIT Media Lab wh led the study, abut the ChatGPT users. "If yu dn't remember what yu wrte, yu dn't feel wnership. D yu even care?"
32. What was the main finding f Dr. Mehmad's experiment?
A. AI - generated summaries are mre helpful than traditinal searches.
B. Peple using AI summaries gave less detailed and helpful advice.
C. Traditinal Ggle searches are n lnger useful fr writing.
D. AI tls imprve the quality f writing assignments significantly.
33. What des the term "brain rt" refer t in the text?
A. A disease caused by using cmputers.
B. Imprved thinking ability frm using AI.
C. Mental decline due t pr cntent cnsumptin.
D. A new type f brain training methd.
34. Which f the fllwing best summarizes the central idea f the text?
A. AI tls are useless fr academic tasks.
B. Using AI may reduce mental engagement and memry maintenance.
C. Traditinal search engines are better than AI fr all tasks.
D. Students shuld avid using technlgy in writing assignments.
35. Why des the authr mentin Nataliya Ksmyna's questin: "D yu even care?"
A. T shw that ChatGPT users are lazy.
B. T emphasize the lss f persnal cnnectin t ne's wrk when using AI.
C. T criticize MIT's research methds.
D. T encurage mre use f AI in writing.

Arund the glbe, abut 1 in 4 adults says they’re lnely. And the cnsequences f lng - term scial discnnectin can be everything frm an increased risk f heart attacks t dementia (痴呆). The fllwing ffers a rad map t make cnnectins.
Be curius. It's easier t cnnect with peple if yu have shared interests r experiences, s start paying attentin t what's in yur mind. What mtivates yu? What excites yu? 36 If yu knw what's meaningful r fun fr yu, it may lead yu t an activity that cnnects yu t thers.

38 Share smething abut yurself. It desn't have t be the darkest secret f yur life, but just smething ther peple might find interesting. Putting yurself ut there requires a bit f a risk, and it's the first step t real cnnectin.
Find a grup that matches yur interests. Whether it’s vlunteering fr a cause r playing frisbee (飞盘), try t find thers wh share yur interests. There’s even an nline grup that has a quirky shared interest: a fascinatin with brwn bears in Alaska, which led t Fat Bear Week. In interactins with thers, yu can begin t reveal yurself and share the unique things that matter t yu. 39
Other peple’s lneliness matters t. 40 If lneliness ges unaddressed, peple can end up in a wrld f hurt. If yu see smene experiencing lneliness, ask them hw they’re ding. Share yur wn experience f lneliness and hw yu get rid f it. Thus, helping thers can als benefit yurself.
A. Pur ut yur hard feelings t strangers arund yu.
B. Lneliness can spread if we ignre the peple arund us.
C. Small, persnal shares can be the start f a meaningful talk.
D. Yu dn't need t create “masterpieces” t express yurself.

We tday welcme yu nt nly as students, but as the newest members f ur cmmunity f Schlars. I
__41__ want t nte sme f the cmmitments that define academic life, nt nly here, but acrss America's research universities.

Visit their ffice hurs, share meals, and discuss ideas freely, including whether they agree with what I've said in this speech (they ften dn't, and that's fine).
That brings me t anther f the cmmitments that define schlarly cmmunities. We treat __51__ disagreement as desirable and beneficial. When peple ask hard but fair questins abut ur ideas, we shuld regard their __52__ as a cmpliment(赞誉). It means they are taking yur ideas seriusly. New generatins f scientists replace lder theries with better nes. T live up t the ideals f a schlarly cmmunity, we all need t __53__ that sme f ur pinins will turn ut t be wrng. We need t seek ut criticism and test ur views against the mst cnvincing __54__.
Finally, Let me mentin ne ther principle that is __55__ t this and ther schlarly cmmunities. That's a cmmitment t hnesty. At Princetn, the undergraduate hnr cde is ne especially visible demnstratin f this imprtant cmmitment. Yu need n lecture n why hnesty matters—yu've knwn since childhd.
