Many students find it hard t fit in at a new schl, but it’s different fr thse in the IB prgram at Beijing Natinal Day Schl. Each year, the CAS (Creativity, Activity, Service) Ceremny gives freshmen a chance t meet their peers (同龄人) and make friends with lder students.

Over the next few years, they will take part in varius activities, such as Sprts Day and the Talent Shw, and cmpete t earn pints fr their huses. Different frm the nvel, where students are srted by the famus Srting Hat, the huses here are assigned randmly (随机分配). This year, the teacher used a plastic bttle filled with balls in the fur huse clrs. Students went nstage and held ut their hands, and the teacher pured ut a clrful ball t determine their huses.
“I felt nervus because everything— the buildings, teachers and classmates— was s new t me,” said Shen Nanxi, wh jined the Yellw Huse. “But when the lder students and huse captains greeted me with lud cheers, I felt s mved and knew I had fund my ‘family’ at schl.”
After the srting, the first cmpetitin began. In each huse, smaller grups f fur t five students wrked tgether t cmplete different tasks, such as taking silly phts, mdeling their favrite teachers with clay and playing charades.

In a big win fr the planet, renewable energy passed cal t becme the wrld’s main surce f electricity in the first half f this year, accrding t new data frm the glbal energy think tank Ember.
Electricity demand cntinues t rise wrldwide. Despite this, the strng grwth f slar and wind energy nt nly met the increased demand but als cntributed t a small drp in cal and gas use, accrding t the BBC. In the first half f the year, slar pwer made up mst f the grwth, meeting 83 percent f the rise in electricity demand. Other renewables such as wind pwer als grew by mre than 7 percent.
Amng the cuntries that cntributed t this shift, China and India were the main drivers f grwth, accrding t the Ember reprt. It shws that in the first half f this year, China alne added mre renewable energy than the rest f the wrld cmbined, leading t a 2percent fall in its use f fssil fuels (化石燃料). Over the same perid, renewable energy in India grew three times faster than electricity demand, causing its cal and gas use t drp by3.1 percent and 34 percent.
Develped regins like the US and the Eurpean Unin (EU), hwever, saw the ppsite happen. In the US, demand fr electricity grew faster than the supply f clean energy, leading t greater use f fssil fuels. And in the EU, mnths f weak wind and water pwer led t a rise in cal and gas use, as reprted by the BBC.
Lwer-incme cuntries prduced the mst slar energy—58 percent f the ttal, accrding t the BBC. This is mainly due t big price cuts, which made slar pwer mre affrdable. Fr example, in 2024, Pakistan bught slar panels that culd prduce twice as much pwer as the year befre. African cuntries are als seeing a slar bm, with panel imprts rising 60 percent year n year.
This achievement is seen by experts as an imprtant turning pint. Ember senir analyst Malgrzata Wiatrs-Mtyka tld the BBC that it “marks the beginning f a shift where clean pwer is keeping pace with demand grwth”.
      28. What made renewable energy becme the wrld’s majr surce f electricity this year?
      A. A sharp drp in glbal electricity demand.B. The strng grwth f slar and wind energy.
      C. A cmplete stp f cal use wrldwide.D. The decrease in the price f fssil fuels.
      29. What des the underlined wrd “bm” in Paragraph 5 prbably mean?
      A. A rapid increase.B. A slw change.C. A cmplete stp.D. A sudden decrease.
      30. What is Malgrzata Wiatrs-Mtyka’s attitude twards the renewable energy?
      A. Psitive.B. Dubtful.C. Uninterested.D. Critical.
      31. What is the main idea f the passage?
      A. The demand f electricity use cntinues t rise wrldwide.
      B. The use f renewable energy grws faster arund the wrld.
      C. renewable energy and cal is the wrld’s main surce f electricity.
      D. renewable energy prvides mre electricity than cal des wrldwide.
      D
On Sept 22, the Chinese navy annunced that three types f aircraft, including the J-35,had cmpleted their takeff and landing training n the Fujian aircraft carrier (航空母舰).They used the ship’s electrmagnetic catapults (电磁弹射) fr these tests. This achievement makes China the secnd cuntry t use an advanced electrmagnetic aircraft launch system (EMALS). Besides, the Fujian is the wrld’s first nn-nuclear-pwered aircraft carrier t use EMALS.
Catapults and ski jumps are tw main methds t help aircraft take ff frm shrt runways while keeping carriers lighter and cheaper, as reprted by Interesting Engineering.
Ski-jump systems are easier t equip and maintain and have been ppular since the Cld War. Hwever, they limit hw much weight an aircraft can carry, including fuel and weapns.
Catapult systems, n the ther hand, allw aircraft t launch faster and farther and can handle heavier planes. Traditinal catapults use steam pwer, as explained by Naval MarineArchive. They can speed up a 20- tn aircraft frm 0 t 266 kilmeters per hur in just tw secnds. Hwever, steam catapults need 30 t 60 minutes t build up pressure. After eight t10 launches, the pressure drps, requiring a 30- minute break t “rebil the water”. Once a launch begins, the push cannt be adjusted, which can be a prblem if the settings are incrrect.
China’s EMALS, hwever, can be ready in just 15 minutes, accrding t The China Academy. Its push is strng but gentler, and it can be adjusted during launch t ensure a safe takeff speed. Thanks t an advanced electric system develped by a team led by Chinese scientist Ma Weiming, each EMALS- assisted launch n the Fujian uses nly 30kilwatt- hurs(the energy prvided by a thusand watts in ne hur) f electricity. This is much less than the 630 kilwatt- hurs needed by the USS Gerald R. Frd, the wrld’s largest aircraft carrier.
      32. Which f the fllwing indicates the Fujian aircraft carrier’s achievement?
      A. It is the wrld’s largest aircraft carrier.B. It is China’s first ne using EMALS.
      C. It cmbines advantages f lder nes.D. It can handle varius types f aircraft.
      33. What is the main disadvantage f ski- jump systems?
      A. They need lng runways.B. They are difficult t build.
      C. They restrict the aircraft’s lad.D. They are expensive t maintain.
      34. What d we knw abut steam catapults?
      A. They need a break after a few launches.B. They allw fr mid- launch push adjustments.
      C. They are mre gentle n aircraft than EMALS.D. They have been stpped using by many cuntries.
      35. Cmpared with the USS Gerald R. Frd, the Fujian’s EMALS uses less electricity prbably because _______.
      A. It features a larger size and a faster takeff speed.
      B. It uses traditinal steam pwer instead f electricity.
      C. It launches lighter aircraft than the American carrier.
      D. It has a Chinese-develped advanced electric system.
