Chinese scientists have discvered what determined the distributin f unique high-altitude plants acrss the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau, thereby answering a majr glbal scientific questin.
“Fr decades, scientists have tried t understand hw these muntain-specific plants develped their unique distributin patterns,” said Wang Ta, a prfessr at the Chinese Academy f Sciences’ Institute f Tibetan Plateau Research. Wrking with researchers frm hme and abrad, Wang’s team fund that histrical shifts in tree grwth limits—the highest altitude at which trees can survive—played a crucial rle.
It is widely accepted that the uplift f the plateau played a key rle in the rigin f its plants, while peridic climate changes during the Quaternary Perid (abut 2.6 millin years ag) drve the diversificatin f species. Earlier studies have warned that glbal warming pushes trees higher up muntains, squeezing the habitat f high-altitude plants.
“In additin t the Quaternary climate fluctuatins (波动), the fluctuatins regarding past tree line shifts have als influenced the diversity f unique high-altitude species in highland, a factr that had nt been explred befre,” Wang said.
The study fund that the average altitude f the tree line in the distant past n the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau varied frm rughly 3,426 meters t 4,187 meters. The fluctuatins in tree line altitude between glacial and interglacial perids reached up t 850 meters, causing the habitat area fr unique high-altitude species during interglacial perids t be abut 50 percent f the habitat area during glacial perids.
“Areas with stable envirnments ver time develped mre unique plant mixes. In cntrast, regins with frequent tree line changes had simpler, mre unifrm plant cmmunities,” Wang said. “Think f envirnmental changes as a filter—nly the tughest species survive repeated shifts, making plant grups lk similar.”
Accrding t the study, rapid warming and rising tree lines culd threaten the plateau’s unique plants. “These species aren’t built t handle duble pressures frm climate change and invading (入侵的) trees,” said Wang. “Our findings help design better prtectin plans.”
12. What led t the diversity f plants accrding t Wang’s research?
A. Histrical tree line changes.B. The uplift f the plateau.
C. Wrsening climate cnditins.D. The lss f the habitats.
13. What d the numbers in paragraph 5 indicate?
A. The influence f human activities n glbal warming.
B. The ability f high-altitude plants t survive extreme cld.
C. The temperature differences between different perids.
D. The impact f plant line shifts n habitat reductin.
14. What can we learn frm paragraph 6?
A. Grwing like a weed.B. Survival f the fittest.
C. The early bird catches the wrm.D. A tree is knwn by its fruit.
15. Which can be a suitable title fr the text?
A. The Rle f Glaciers in Plant Evlutin
B. New Light Thrwn n Diversity f Plateau’s Plants
C. Climate Change and the Decline f High-altitude Species
