“Gd mrning, everyne. Gd mrning.” It’s 5:30 a. m. , and a speaker-annuncement jlts me awake frm a dead sleep. “We have abut 20 r s humpback whales utside ur ship.”
I launch myself ut f bed, darting ut f my cabin and up t a viewing deck. If I’m being hnest, at least part f my mtivatin t g t these places is t see them nw as they are nw — befre they’re irreversibly changed r gne. I’m nt alne in this.
Once a pstdc and research scientist at the University f Michigan, Kurt Hillig takes phts f everything frm flwers t glaciers alng the way. Recrd keeping. “This is here nw and I’m here nw,” he says. “I’m trying t capture it befre it disappears, s I can share it with ther peple shw them this is what the wrld culd have been, if we hadn’t been s driven by prfit instead f pleasure.”

The placeb effect is a well-knwn example f the brain’s pwer ver the bdy, allwing peple wh are prly r in pain t imprve if they are led t believe they are being treated. The ppsite, hwever, is als pssible: patients wh believe that prcedures will cause them t suffer ill effects can make themselves wrse.
The rts f this anti-placeb, r nceb, effect are difficult t identify. But in a paper in Health Psychlgy Review, researchers in Australia have pled the available evidence and ranked the cntributing factrs. Misinfrmatin n scial media seems t cme near the tp. In fact, what psychlgists call scial learning — the drawing f inferences frm the views f thers — was fund t be as pwerful as lived experience, and mre influential than infrmatin given by a dctr.
This is a prblem, says Csette Saunders, a psychlgist at the University f Sydney and lead authr f the study. Scial learning may nt be able t spread infectin r cause new disease, but it can drive harmful side-effects. And managing these side-effects csts health systems arund the wrld billins f dllars.
Take cancer treatment. In recent years, new drugs have emerged t cntrl the side-effects experienced by peple receiving chemtherapy. But Dr Saunders says that vmiting and nausea have nt cme dwn in cancer patients by as much as expected. Scial learning may be respnsible. “They’ll say, their mther-in-law had chem twenty years ag and she was vmiting every single day,” Dr Saunders says. “Thse kinds f lng-held beliefs are influencing them nw, even thugh the medical landscape has changed.”
Thugh the impact f the placeb effect has been recgnised fr centuries, wrk n the nceb effect is much newer. Only in the past tw decades have many scientists been cnvinced f its real-wrld impact, helped by studies that demnstrate hw a negative attitude can lead t physical symptms such as increased heart rate and physilgical arusal.
The cnclusins f the Australian analysis are clear abut the pwer f scial learning. But, says Dr Saunders, it is hard t knw hw much f these effects are dwn t scial-media use as ppsed t, say, chatting with friends at the pub. Dr Saunders’ lab is ne f many nw trying t find ways t minimise the damage. One pssibility is t balance warnings f nasty side-effects with psitive prf frm patients wh had n prblems. If she finds smething that wrks, she’ll pass it n.

In sme instances, the peel f sme fruits has been shwn t have antixidant (抗氧化剂) levels that are much higher than the inside f the fruit. 12 Sme fd manufacturers are enriching functinal fds, such as breads and biscuits, with fruit and vegetable peels.
13 Hwever, Keith Ayb, a registered dietitian-nutritinist at the Albert Einstein Cllege f Medicine in The Brnx, pints ut, “That’s where the nutrients are hidden.” “Clrs have pwer because they indicate the presence f antixidants,” which help prtect cells frm damage caused by pllutants, ultravilet rays, and ther surces f unstable mlecules called free radicals (自由基).
Because “the peel is the prtective layer n fruits and vegetables, it tends t have cncentrated cmpunds like phytchemicals that serve as defense mechanisms against the sun, rain, and pests,” says Wendy Bazilian, a nutritinist and public health cnsultant based in San Dieg. “ 14 When yu peel these fruits and vegetables, yu literally peel ff sme f the nutritin.”

Tw years ag, I had a bad habit f waking up late fr wrk. Every mrning was the same — I’d start my shift, d the wrk, and cunt the hurs until I culd lg ff. In the evenings, I played vide games. The next day, the cycle wuld repeat. Nw, while gaming remains a passin, I wake up early and my mrnings are dedicated t learning and writing befre my 9-t-5 begins. This shift started a dmin effect (多米诺效应): a new higher-paying jb and my wn apartment that I didn’t have t share with strangers. Life didn’t becme less demanding, but meaningfully busier. A key cmpnent f this transfrmatin? Gamificatin.
Vide games thrive n clear bjectives and prgress. Think f the main missin as yur verall gal, and side missin as the milestnes alng the way. Cmpleting these “side missin” prvide a fld f dpamine (多巴胺) , fueling cntinued engagement and self-imprvement. Last year, my “main missin” was t becme a clud engineer. This required cnsistent learning and practical applicatin. The sub-gals included mastering prgramming and databases. Each newly acquired skill felt like pening up new pssibilities in my life.
Just as vide games track prgress thrugh skill pints, I needed a way t visualize my advancement. Measuring my grwth, even n days when I felt frustrated — everything I was studying was leaving my brain faster than it entered, ffered pwerful reassurance and reminded me that I was leveling up. It prvided cncrete feedback, highlighting hw far I’d cme and reducing the temptatin t quit. I diligently dcumented every new skill I acquired tward becming a clud engineer, cmparing it against the ‘requirements’ and the ‘nice t have’ sectins f jb descriptins until I cvered everything.
In essence, I applied the principles f playing games t mtivate myself and stay n track. Thrugh gamified thinking and the cnsistent cultivatin f psitive habits, I engineered my wn grwth.

The infrmatin, sentences, r questins that yu enter int a Generative AI (Gen AI) tl (“prmpts”) are a big influence n the quality f utputs yu receive. After yu enter a prmpt, the AI mdel analyzes yur input and generates a respnse based n the patterns it has learned thrugh its training. Mre descriptive prmpts can imprve the quality f the utputs.
It’s very imprtant t keep in mind that AI-generated cntent can be inaccurate, misleading, entirely fabricated, r ffensive, s be sure t carefully review any wrk cntaining AI cntent befre yu use r publish it. Abuse f Gen AI is a serius frm f academic miscnduct and can be punished by expulsin (开除) frm the University.
Be specific
Generic prmpts like “Write a stry” will prduce generic results. What kind f stry d yu want? What genre? Is it fr adults r children? Adding this type f cntext and being specific, clear, and cncise will help generate mre useful utputs. Mre specificity can als limit the chances f inaccurate respnses.
“Act as if…”
Asking the AI t behave as if were a type f persn, prcess, r bject can be an easy way t start generating better prmpts. The AI will attempt t emulate that rle and tailr its answers accrdingly.
Fr example, imagine yu wanted help create a recipe based n the ingredients yu have in yur kitchen. If yu added “act as if yu are my persnal trainer” first, the AI will cnsider this cntext in its respnse, suggesting a healthy recipe r a meal designed t refuel after a wrkut.
____________________
Generative AI can prduce many different types f utputs, including cde, stries, reprts, summaries, dialgue, business cmmunicatins, and much mre. Being specific abut the type f utput yu want will prduce better results. After describing what yu want, try adding “Present this in the frm f…” and yur preferred utput. Or start yur prmpt with, “Create a [frmat f utput] abut/that cntains…” etc.
5.This passage is fund in a university’s guideline webpage. What may NOT be fund there?

Like millins f Americans, I am dyslexic (诵读困难者). I can’t remember which side is my right and which is my left.
I knw this makes n sense. After all, I have n prblem telling the difference between ther things. I knw up frm dwn. I knw black frm white. I knw frks frm spns. And yet, I d nt knw left frm right. My brain is nt wired that way. This is true fr many dyslexics, and I suspect multimdal large language mdels (MLLMs) may be dyslexic t.
As a kid with dyslexia, schl was very hard fr me. Fr example, we humans created tw lwercase letters in the English alphabet — “b” and “d” — that are nly different because ne pints left and ne pints right. Fr decades, I culd nt tell the difference. This is a very cmmn prblem amng dyslexics. The same is true fr telling time n traditinal clck faces — it nly makes sense if yu knw the difference between clckwise and cunterclckwise. These challenges dn't end in elementary schl. I still remember getting a prblem wrng in a physics class at Stanfrd because I applied the “right-hand rule” with my left hand.
Dyslexia has nthing t d with fcus r intelligence — yur brain just wrks differently frm the peple wh created the cultural cnventins we use in symblic languages, mathematics, and many branches f science. I surely knw what’s ging n. It all relates t the “mind’s eye.” By this, I mean the way I visualize things inside my mind and stre spatial elements in memry. When I recall things in my mind (bjects, envirnments, images, r text), I dn’t visualize them frm a fixed first-persn perspective. I think abut them frm all directins at nce, mre as a vague clud f perspectives than a single, grunded rientatin.
This brings me back t multimdal large language mdels that prcess and interpret images and vides. These mdels are remarkable. They can match r exceed human perfrmance n cuntless tasks, fr example, diagnsing cancers frm visual slides better than any human. And yet, a recent study fund a surprising result: All majr MLLMs currently struggle t tell time n analg clcks. Accrding t the study, GPT-4.0 was nly able t crrectly read clck faces 8% f the time. Claude-3-5-snnet was wrse at 6%. Gemini 2.0 was the best, but still at nly 20%.
These numbers are surprisingly lw, especially when yu cnsider that these AI mdels can perfrm s well in ther cntexts. This is surprisingly similar t dyslexia in humans, nt just in the simple artifacts that cause prblems likes clcks, but in the cntradictry mix f strengths and weaknesses that enables a persn like me t earn a PhD and wrk successfully as a cmputer scientist and engineer, and yet still fail the “turn left here” test.
8.The phrase “mind’s eye” (paragraph 4) refers t ________.
A.Literal visual perceptin thrugh bilgical eyesB.A medical device used t treat dyslexia
C.The brain’s ability t frm and stre mental imagesD.A metaphr fr intelligence qutient (IQ)
9.Why d multimdal language mdels (MLLMs) struggle t read analg clcks accurately, accrding t the passage?
A.Their cgnitive prcess f spatial infrmatin is similar t that f dyslexic humans.
B.They were primarily trained n digital clcks, leaving analg clck recgnitin underdevelped.
C.Clck faces require understanding f cultural cnventins, which AI lacks cmpared t humans.
D.Their visual recgnitin systems fcus mre n bject detectin like cancer diagnsis than directinal interpretatin.
10.Why des the authr emphasize that he failed a physics task due t left-right cnfusin yet ultimately earned a PhD?
A.T argue that universities shuld relax academic standards fr dyslexic students
B.T suggest AI culd cmpensate fr human cgnitive limitatins in scientific research.
C.T demnstrate that physics is uniquely difficult fr peple with spatial prcessing differences.
D.T highlight that dyslexia's challenges are specific rather than reflective f verall intellectual ability.
11.Which f the fllwing might be the best title f the passage?
A.The Cmplete Guide t Dyslexia Treatments
B.When Machines Mirrr Human Learning Disabilities
C.Are Large Language Mdels Dyslexic?
D.Why Schls Must Adapt t Dyslexic Students

Finding Hard Ways t Measure “Sft” Leadership
Management experts have been prmting new leadership styles fr a while. We ften say that the ld “cmmand and cntrl” apprach is utdated, and that tday’s leaders shuld fcus n shared leadership, empwering thers, using knwledge netwrks, and helping peple find meaning in their wrk. 12 When the pressure is n, many managers g back t strict, tp-dwn methds, shwing they dn’t see new appraches as essential t success. This is especially true when there are n clear rle mdels, standards, r guidelines t fllw. S the big questin is: Can we prve that “sft” leadership actually wrks?
Last year, my clleagues Mrten Hansen, Urs Peyer, and I used slid data t find ut which CEOs had brught the mst value t their cmpanies ver the past ten years. We measured things like yearly changes in stck returns and cmpany value during each CEO’s time in charge. 13 In ur next prject, we’ll cmbine ur data with infrmatin frm ther surces that track mdern leadership styles. (Sme tls already track behavirs linked t innvatin, sustainability, and ther psitive results.) By cmparing this infrmatin, we aim t find leadership styles that truly help cmpanies succeed.
14 Perhaps mre imprtant, the clse study f their cases will help us develp a picture f hw the different values they pursue cme tgether t frm a new mdel f leadership.
15 If we can figure ut what great leadership lks like in tday’s wrld, we may be able t predict which leaders will add the mst value t their rganizatins in the cming decade. As management educatrs, we might als learn hw best t develp the generatin f leaders wh will take charge f ur largest, mst pwerful cmpanies.
A.By studying these successful business leaders, we hpe t prvide hard evidence that their successes are due t their apprach t leadership.
B.Hw d these business leaders succeed?
C.Hwever, in reality, these mdern styles are still seen as ptinal r even sft.
D.Nw that we knw wh added value, the next step is t understand hw they did it.
E.Successful leaders tend t appear apprachable in the ffice.
F.Why is all this imprtant?
