The Beneficial Effects f Frest Fires
Frest fires are undubtedly a threat. In the mid-1900s, all frest burns were cnsidered undesirable, and firefighters respnded t all f these fires whether r nt they were burning clse t where humans lived. This apprach t frest fires was bth expensive and risky. Hwever, mre recently frest managers began t see that frest fires did have benefits. Fresters saw that frest fires were beneficial fr trees and sil.
Previusly, peple believed that frest fires caused irreparable damage t trees; hwever, nw frest managers knw that trees are the majr beneficiaries f fires. Many naturally ccurring frest fires, ften caused by lightning strikes, are surface fires that burn the understry — the shrubs and herbs frm the frest — withut damaging the trees in the verstry. In this way, the fire eliminates cmpetitin frm the smaller trees, allwing the larger trees t flurish. Once the understry has been burned away, the frest is less likely t burn frm high-temperature fires that can d real damage t the tall trees.
In the past, it was nt bvius hw frest fires enriched the sil. Tday, fresters understand that frest fires imprve sil quality by changing the ‘litter’ — dead leaves and branches n the frest flr — t nutrient-rich sil. Nrmally, litter decmpses very slwly. Hwever, fire releases the nutrients in the litter immediately. This creates an increase in the amunt f phsphrus and ptassium which are key elements that prmte tree grwth.
As frest managers have learned mre abut the lng-term effects f frest fires, they have realized that frest fires can have beneficial effects and have changed their frest management practices t reflect this new pinin. It is nw recgnized that frest fires are a natural part f frest ecsystems and are beneficial t the trees and sil.
