The great elephant stands in the ht African sun. Slwly the beast lifts its head and its thick trunk delicately
curls arund the leaves f a nearby tree, pulling ut the leaves and plitely slipping them int its muth.
The beast’s great gray skin is partly brken and aged frm the African sun. Sme mud drps n ne side frm
its last trip t a nearby river. Its rugh hair sticks ut frm all ver its skin and tw large, white tusks curve
elegantly frm either side f its muth.
Smewhere a lin rars and smething else gives a lud high shut. A vulture (秃鹫) drifts ver far abve this
wrld, barely a black dt in the sky. The buzzing f the cuntless bush insects seems t cllectively shift up in high
tune, almst like the whle f the savanna (热带草原) was singing sme sng that nly they knew.
I peer thrugh the lens at this scene. The zm lens shws almst every detail f the elephant: the three small
cuts in its left ear frm playing as a baby arund thrn trees, the scar dwn its frnt leg where a lin caught it
unaware as a yung adult, and weathering n its great, valuable tusks frm decades f living in this unfrgiving
      grassland n a dusty cntinent.
And then the elephant lks at me. It lks at me with thse big, eyelashed eyes with a warmth cming
utwards frm a vast, hidden depth there. I can suddenly feel its sul, and feel the line f elephants that came
befre this ne, trailing back t the very beginnings f this great savanna. We will never understand what wnders
this ancient being and its kind have seen and whispered t each ther acrss the ages n this ld, sacred grassland.
It lks at me, and it lks thrugh me and sees me. The elephant knws I am there. It always did. It is nt
running away, nr is it fighting. It accepts and frgives. It lves. But, mstly, it just feels sad. It feels srry fr me. I
      cannt d this anymre.
I take my eye ff the sights and hand the gun back t my partner. “Let’s g hme,” I said in a quiet vice, “let’
      s just g hme.”
      24. Which wrd can best describe the elephant in the first tw paragraphs?
      A. Mysterius. B. Depressed. C. Aggressive. D. Graceful.
      25. What des the shift in fcus frm the elephant t thers imply in Paragraph 3?
      A. The elephant is abut t be attacked.
      B. The authr is lsing interest in the elephant.
      C. The elephant is part f a larger and living wrld.
      D. The authr wants t shw the savanna’s dangers.
      湖北省武汉中学 2025-2026 学年度高二年级上学期元月月考 英语试卷第 1 页,共 3 页
      26. Hw des the authr feel when seeing thrugh the lens?
      A. He is deeply mved and filled with sympathy. B. He is verwhelmed by the elephant’s strength.
      C. He is annyed at the presence f ther animals. D. He is shcked and scared by the elephant’s scars.

      A. Nature calms ur anger. B. Nature purifies ur suls.
      C. Nature heals ur wunds. D. Nature enriches ur imaginatin.
      C
D the clrs that surrund yu influence hw yu feel? Can the clrs n yur walls and n yur clthes
affect yur mds? Sme researchers believe the answer is a decisive yes, while thers aren’t s sure.
Yet many marketers, interir designers, medical prfessinals and thers swear by an infrmal field f science
knwn as clr psychlgy. Clr psychlgy is defined as “the study f hw the clrs we perceive impact ur
      thughts and feelings.”
Marketers use the science f clr t persuade us t buy things. When chsing paint, furniture and wall art,
interir designers act n the thery that clrs can aruse certain feelings in us. Dentists are ften advised t use
light blue paint n their ffice walls t help calm apprehensive patients.
We shuld keep in mind, thugh, that nly by cnsidering cultural preferences are we able t fully understand
the science f clr. Fr instance, in the West, white is fr brides and black is fr funerals. But in ancient Asia,
white was smetimes wrn fr funerals. In Japan yellw represents curage while in the United States, it represents
happiness. Additinally, many variables including gender, age, backgrund and mre must be cnsidered befre
making clr assumptins when ne is studying the effects f clr.
After taking clr variables int accunt, it’s safe t cnsider sme mainstream theries abut specific clrs
and their meanings. Here are just a few:
Red symblizes lve energy, passin and danger Red is als believed t increase ne’s hunger, which might
be the reasn why McDnald’s and Cca-Cla chse red as their majr branding clr.
Brwn, a clr frm nature, best represents things that are hnest, trustwrthy and dependable. It seems a
perfect fit as the branding clr fr the package delivery cmpany UPS.
Blue —— in additin t representing peace and calm —— als means integrity and cmpetence. It’s n
surprise that PayPal and American Express bth use blue as their branding clr.
Green —— anther clr frm nature —— represents health, grwth and freshness and is the perfect
      branding clr fr Starbucks.

Pink symblizes lve, rmance, inncence and femininity (女性特质). The ppular dll cmpany that makes
Barbie uses pink as its majr branding clr.
If clr psychlgy advcates are crrect, then ur emtins and decisins are truly influenced by the clrs
arund us. With this knwledge, we can effectively harness (驾驭) clr pwer t create psitive schl, wrk and
      hme envirnments.
      28. What des the phrase “swear by” in the secnd paragraph prbably mean?
      A. Deeply investigate. B. Deeply believe. C. Smewhat dubt. D. Still wish.
      29. What is the authr’s purpse f taking white and black as an example in the passage?
      A. T remind we shuld take culture int accunt when learning the science f clr.
      B. T state that cultural preferences are decisive factrs in clr psychlgy.
      C. T shw different cultures have different preferences fr different clrs.
      D. T prve white and black represent cmplete different things in different cuntries.
      30. What is the reasn fr PayPal t chse its branding clr?

Mst air cnditiners use refrigerant gases called HFCs (氢氟碳化合物),which are hundreds f times mre
effective at trapping heat in the atmsphere than CO₂. Researchers have lng sught ways t prduce cling
systems that d withut these trublesme gases. Nw Exergyn, a Dublin-based cmpany, claims t have
develped a new type f air cnditining which avids using HFCs.
Exergyn’s system uses nitinl, a shape-memry ally (合金) f nickel and titanium. All shape-memry allys
release heat when cmpressed (压缩), and then absrb it when the pressure is released and they return t their
riginal shape. But Exergyn’s versin f nitinl displays this quality t a remarkable degree. Fr its experimental

mdel, the cmpany prduced 4 cm² plates f the ally, each with hles t permit the passage f a heat-carrying
liquid r gas. A range f ec-friendly substances such as water, salty water and air can-be emplyed in that rle,
thus aviding the use f HFCs.
Kevin O’ Tle, Exergyn’s managing directr, explains, “T build a refrigeratr invlves fitting these plates
tgether int stacks f 50 r mre. Fur stacks make a unit. The stacks are cmpressed in turn. At any given
mment, ne stack is being cmpressed, ne released, ne pre-heated and ne pre-cled. T cl a rm invlves
passing ne ht circuit and ne cld circuit f the heat-carrying fluid r gas thrugh this fur-stack unit.”
This methd f cling is nt nly mre envirnmentally friendly than an HFC set-up, but will als be less
expensive t buy and 30%–40% cheaper t run. It will be lighter and smaller, t. As fr reliability, the prttype’s
perfrmance suggests the unit culd perate fr mre than 40 years withut a prblem.
Develpment is still cntinuing, but prducts may be nly a few years away. Exergyn has als begun talks
with carmakers and aerspace cmpanies abut setting up jint-develpment prjects. With cars and sme small
aircraft ging electric, it is nt just cling the cabin that manufacturers have t think abut, but als cling the
      batteries.
      32. What are the hles in the plates f ally intended fr?
      A. Aviding the use f thse trublesme gases such as HFCs.
      B. Testing a range f substances such as water, salty water and air.
      C. Passing the heat-carrying fluid r gas thrugh the fur-stack unit.
      D. Helping cmpress, release, pre-heat and pre-cl the fur stacks.
      33. What des the furth paragraph mainly talk abut cncerning the new type f cling?
      A. Its ptential. B. Its strengths. C. Its functins. D. Its affrdability.
      34. What can we infer abut Exergyn frm the last paragraph?
      A. It is likely t expand its business. B. It will set up an aerspace cmpany.
      C. It has brught the technlgy t market. D. It will lead the market f air cnditining.
      35. Which f the fllwing is the best title fr the text?
      A. Mdel: a fur-stack unit B. HFCs: a ptential crisis
      C. Exergyn: a future winner D. Nitinl: a cler alternative

Peple say frtune favrs the brave, but taking a leap is easier said than dne. 36
      ●Embrace strategic risk.
One f the biggest miscnceptins abut risk-taking is that if smething feels uncmfrtable, it’s a sign t
back away. But researches have taught us this: 37 Ask yurself, “Des this risk match my values? Is it
mving me tward smething I care abut?” If yes, expect sme embarrassment. The biggest payffs live just past
      that initial awkward phase.
      ● 38
Many f us have grwn t afraid f taking risks — maybe because ne risk made us embarrassed. A gd
way t feel less scared f risks is t ask yurself: “What’s ne small thing I can d t get used t nt knwing what
will happen?” Start with bite-size, winnable risks, like speaking up in a meeting, vlunteering fr a prject slightly
      utside yur wheelhuse.
      ●Breathe in bravery.
Breathe ut fear. 39 In ther wrds, taking a few deep breaths helps regulate anxiety. Anther easy
way t stretch yur risk- taking muscles is by cpying smene yu admire. Imagine them in yur shes and hw
they’d apprach yur challenge. Hw wuld they talk, walk r hld themselves? Even standing tall sends a signal
t yur brain that “yu’ve gt this”.
      ●Frgive yurself.
We all have mments when we dn’t d the thing that will help us grw. And that’s kay! Instead f beating
yurself up, frgive yurself because yu’re human. 40 Being kind t yurself may just be the best way t
step frward tward a braver versin f yurself.
      A. Enjy small wins.
      B. Our bdy impacts ur mind.
      C. Overcme unexpected fears.
      D. N ne is curageus all the time.
      E. Humans always have high expectatins.
      F. Bravery and awkwardness are sisters in life.
      G. The fllwing tips will help yu utsmart fear.
